The Neptune Systems Trident ACM is an advanced automated testing system that continuously monitors the three most critical parameters in a saltwater reef aquarium: alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium. By fully automating the testing process, the Trident eliminates the need for manual test kits, providing reef keepers with consistent, high-frequency data. This allows for a deeper understanding of consumption trends, early detection of potential issues, and the ability to maintain unparalleled long-term stability in your reef's chemistry.
This system uses a precise combination of automated titration and an internal colorimeter to deliver repeatable results with exceptional accuracy, testing your aquarium's water up to 24 times per day. The Trident integrates seamlessly with Neptune Systems Apex controllers, logging every result into the Apex Fusion cloud interface. Within Apex Fusion, you can view historical data graphs, set up alerts for parameter swings, and create automated actions. This kit includes a 2-month supply of Trident ACM reagents to get you started right away.
This product is ideal for the dedicated reef aquarist who wants to achieve the highest level of stability and control over their system. It is particularly valuable for hobbyists running a Neptune Systems Apex controller who wish to remove the potential for human error and the time commitment of daily manual testing. When paired with a Neptune Systems DŌS dosing pump, the Trident creates a powerful closed-loop system that can automatically adjust chemical additive delivery, making proactive, data-driven reef keeping a simple reality.

Have mine working for the past 1.5 years as it should. Consistent and precise testing & logging couldn't be much easier. I absolutely recommend the Apex & Trident investment for trading your time running tests.
I have a trident and as my aquarium is in my bedroom room the noise it makes when testing is high pitch loud noise. I find it very irritating. For the price they could of used much quieter paralytic pump.
I have had a trident for a few years and it always gives me perfect results and it’s made reefing soo much easier
Works amazingly for the last two years. Makes keeping corals easy
The versatility and automation is amazing, allowing you to automate monitoring of your system in so much easier
The case is not solid built...overall flimsy...the cuvette cover fell right off...Must have had an intern designer/engineer...atleast qualify and validate your design before releasing it to the public.
As with any piece of tech, there will be some with issues. The great thing about this is that you can easily open it up and fix most issues pretty quickly. I have 2 Tridents, 1 of them was purchased shortly after launch and loved it so much I purchased another one for my frag system. If you have a hard time trying to justify an expensive purchase then move along, this is a luxury item, not a necessity and if you aren't the least bit tech savvy then don't come on here complaining about an easy fix.
Bought it 6 mo. ago. Worked well the first couple weeks, but after that, inaccuracies started to pile up along with frequent test fails even after re-calibrating dozens of times. Save your money (and headaches) and do weekly manual testing.
The reviews are partially true. It is prone to issues but it seems to be certain systems, not every single one. When I got mine last year I was messed up right out of the box - I had to get 2 replacements until the 3rd was the winner and it worked well ever since. There are the occasional issues with it giving a wrong value but it’s easily fixed with recalibration. The salinity was steadily rising for some reason until I realized it wasn’t making any sense so I tested manually, realized it was off, recalibrated and it’s fine. Like anything it needs maintenance. You have to be very very very careful when you replace the reagents to make sure the hoses stay in perfect condition but that shouldn’t be a big deal. Overall, I like it and would recommend it. Hopefully, they can figure out how to make it more ergonomically shaped to be easier to store and make it a tab sturdier but overall this is a good product.
Coming up on 2 years of running my Trident and the only hiccup I had was needing to flush the sample line and clean the cuvette. I have done this once in almost 2 years. I have only calibrated it once and did so using my tank water and not the solution. Come to find out, my magneiusm test kit is bad and the Trident was reading correctly all along. This was triple checked with new test kits and ATI ICP testing. I hacked it to test half as often so reagent costs are far less. No one needs 4 alkalinity and 2 cal/mag tests a day. I did this very early on so I don't buy the warning from Neptune that it needs more tests to stay accurate. I would dock half a star if I could for the design though. The tray is horrible and the lines pinch way too easily. Neptune should have built in some tubing holders to keep eveything neat and tidy. I have never had a tank so stable in almost 20 years of reefing.
I had my trident running for 3 months when an error code test b came on. After two more months and testing and troubleshooting I email Neptune’s with no response. I called them the next day and they said to use the troubleshooting methods they were sending me via email, they insisted that they no longer needed to speak over the phone. After having called them to get a response 4 times and being directed to email I have a no tracking number, no warranty replacement trident and no response from customer service. So now I have a $700 paper weight. I’m not going to spend any more money with any Neptune’s product.
it's pretty common for people to leave negative reviews when things go wrong as opposed to great reviews when things are doing good. so I came here to try and offset the negatives. I have 2 of these units and while 1 of them did give me some issues after a year, I called up Neptune and they were able to walk me through some troubleshooting steps which resolved my issue. I don't do the trident auto dosing because it scares me but to have a tool that tells you if your parameters are stable means the world to me! I calibrate it after changing out the reagents and it's been spot on with my ICP tests that I mail in every 3 months. This is an excellent tool to have! if you see fluctuations it is very easy to increase your 2 part and get it back on track!!! 5 stars all the way!
While I am a fan of Neptune products generally, the only useful information the Trident ever tells me is, in effect, that the Trident itself is broken and needs work. Ordinary readings are ordinary; but a change in readings always meant the Trident needed repair or was falling out of calibration. I had multiple Trident units, so I could have a backup for my backup, because they failed so often. Each unit would get progressively more unreliable. Results would quickly start falling out of calibration within a day or so; error messages (Test A Fail, No Water Sample, etc.) would proliferate. (What use is a reading if you cannot tell -- absent a manual test -- whether it means the Trident is giving bad readings or Alkalinity is really falling or spiking?) I gave up after finding the Trident leaked reagent all over my cabinet. If Neptune or someone else can come up with a better built unit, I may try it. For now, after years of trying, I give up.
I decided to purchase this because of some frequent traveling I do, and I love having the ability to see my parameters at a glance to make sure my SPS is nice and happy. Setup was a breeze, and really had no issues untill about a few weeks ago which is about 6 months in. I received a no-sample error. I did a quick search on youtube on what causes it, and I found it usually a clogged line from who knows what getting pulled from my sump. After learning how the system works it is actually quite simple. Its 5 solenoids and 1 pump. I had to unplug the sample line and use a pipette to squirt high pressure water to clear it out. Re hooked it and it was good as new! Then about a week later, had bad CA reading. Found a puddle, under the trident and realized one of the lines fell out of the manifold. I extended one the lines a bit from the solonoid and it fit nicely back into the manifold. Realized it probably happened because I pinched the waste sample line causing lots of back pressure. Im reading the reviews, and I think a lot of the one stars are unfair. When you think about what it does on a daily basis, its only a matter of time before lines get clogged, or the reagent chamber gets dirty etc. where it'll require some cleaning and maintaince. It's not necessarily Neptune's fault for that, however it would be awesome if they made some youtube videos to teach people how to do a bi-monthly cleaning or something on it so they dont break down on them. My test are always accurate, and when In doubt I use the calibration fluid and get it tightened up. Whats more important than the actual numbers is the trends, if it says 8dkh or 9 dkh doesnt matter to me, but if i see it drop 1 dkh over 2 days, then I know either my kalk doser is broken or my resivioir is empty, and that's really what Im looking for. For the purpose I use it for I think it does a great job. Neptune support is frustrating I agree, and I think that is the one area they should really try to make an improvement in. If you'd like to have daily alk tests, for a relatively simple system, I totally recommend this. Just be prepared to clean it every once in a while like you would any other equipment! It'll get my 5th star once there is more support on how to keep it running smoothly, or having more responsive technical support.
Convenient at first. Then nothing but clogged lines and bad reading. Retired after around 13months. After finding your dosing demands it’s really annoying to continue the reagent replacement every 15 days for it to clog randomly or leak. It’s not easy to fix anything inside either
Day 1 - right out the box. Got one set of tests, all accurate…then never worked right ever again. It won’t read the Calcium and Neptune is no real help. Go online and the site tries to tell you that it’s probably your rank parameters but in case it’s not, you have to send an email first, no customer service number. Send an email, day goes by and you get a reply asking to send a pic. Send pic, another day goes by and this time they tell me to watch a YouTube video on how to literally dismantle my brand new device and to diagnose the problem but no fix. End up having to make an appointment the following day, the guy did give me 1 possible solution, still not fixed and now I’ll have to send in for repairs which I can’t imagine is very quick. Just going to exchange for another - if it happens again, just gonna return it. All the reviews are true, this thing just craps out for no reason. It’s super cool but it’s REALLY poorly designed. It’s so damn delicate that the slightest thing will cause it to break. They really need to fix this device.
I've been using the Trident for a while now. I very much enjoy the automated testing that keeps me informed of any major changes that would trigger the need of manually testing to confirm the Trident test results or the need of calibration. This piece of equipment will need some preventative and reactive service... just accept it. This is a complex device that should be used as a tool to look for swings in levels. You should periodically test your levels manually to confirm the Trident test results are similar to manual testing. I get a kick out of the many that presume flawless functionality out of this thing... it's just not a realistic expectation.
After buying 7 months ago the trident broke and is leaking all over. The tiny tubes will not stay on the pump. All the reviews are true the unit does great at first then bam nothing but problems. Neptune equipment is going down hill for the price. 1st a EB832 this week now the trident. Time for a new system maybe I will try Hydros.
One of the best and must have equipment out there! I love my trident because I was able to monitor all my 3 part everyday day and make adjustments if I have too.
I have had 2 of these, they are never accurate to the Salifert test. I can't tell you how much reagent I have been thru trying to get these to be accurate. I am shelving them and going back to good old manual testing, it's quicker.
This product worked really well for about a year. Now it is a mess. Constant inaccurate tests are the primary issue. I've contacted support and tried troubleshooting.
First year was fine doing all the test but after that some part will definitely not work. What you get for what you paid is not worth it to keep tempering with the machine to make it work.
5 stars for the first year, two if you are lucky. That's when things go downhill. Expect to pay $150+ every year or two to get a refurbished unit that will either need serviced or straight up break, requiring you to repeat the process.
This device has been nothing but problems,... and almost seems impossible to get working right. There is definitely something wrong with my device even after sending it in... Life would be soo much easier just doing regular testing. I've wasted soooo many hours trying to get this thing to work right,... save money and time! Don't buy this thing!!!!!
So many reviews saying the trident breaks down after about 18 months of usage will I know I have to agree with those same reviews. I think it is an inherent issue so they get you on the repairs and past the warranty.
After owning the Neptune Apex with the Trident unit for a year and a half I'm having problems getting tech help. If you want help it takes 7 days before you can schedule an appointment. They will not take phone calls. They use the same voice message as BRS which says they are busy and then hangs up. What is going on?
Unit worked well for over a year then stopped doing any tests. Paid about half the cost of a new unit for service and shipping to have it fixed but came back and only did one test before breaking again. It has been 6 weeks and very difficult to get any support from Apex. Phone immediately goes to voicemail and almost no available times. Email support has not been helpful. Have previously felt that it was a premium product at a higher cost but not sure I would buy anything from Apex again.
First off I have been reef keeping for 15 years. At some point i decided i needed this. I installed two of these on different systems. At first things started out good. Eventually it gained my trust. I have lost thousands in sps as a result. I could not figure it out. In the end every value turned out to be way off. No amount of calibration could fix it. My alarms were constantly going off. Then out of the blue both stopped working entirely. This item is not even worth sending back for maintenance. My word of advice is do some weekly water tests and keep things simple. This is a money grab item. YOU DO NOT NEED THIS
Not sure if BRS will let me post this since I can't edit my original review. I did have to do a $300 service around month 15 of having my trident. I was suppose to get a $100 refund back making it $200 total but neptune returned my entire 300 after exchanging my unit. They did right by me and I can't knock them for that. Also the issues I had were user error. I realized that I was not guiding my reagants in properly. After some frustration I did figure it out and everything is working well
does it job
Purchased this machine a while back, did it's job for the first few months. Then out of the blue, I'm getting no water sample, reagent failed, etc... Factory reset everything and it's still giving me bad readings and such. Called up the rep the company ( I actually got live person to talk to ) explained to him my problem, hoping he would answer me. He then told me I have to open up a service ticket. ( I have you on the phone now, why can't you walk me through the steps ) Again he told me I needed to open up a service ticket. You will then get a reply from us within 24 hrs. Problem was unresolved with the email, had to send the unit back for repair ( my unit was new, no scratches ) when I got my Trident back, the outer shell covering the unit has a deep gouge and scratches. Very upset
When I bought this it was a solid 5 for me. After having various problems from not sucking in water to the solenoids getting stuck in the off position, I decided to buy a Hanna checker. It may not be automatic but damn is it fast, wish I did this from the get go. Imo, if it didn't cost me 200 to replace within the first year(trident replacement program) I would have still rated this high. Everyones mileage will prob vary, but if you fall under what most people I see in the forum do, to keep this thing well maintained you're looking at $20 a month on reagents(if you buy the 6 month pack) and then 200 yr to have your trident serviced. I think it would be worth the money if it tested for nitrate and phosphate and/or allowed to set your own frequency. Unless we are actively making changes to our system, no one really needs 4 tests per especially when 2 of those may happen at a time where we're sleeping (12am and 6am)
Wildly inaccurate result for calcium. Calibration causes more issues then it solves. Can not trust the device to deliver consistent results for alkalinity from reagent bottle to reagent bottle. Not worth the price! Tried nearly everything including running the unit with the drawer open to ensure reagent lines are not pinched. Very little point in testing calcium multiple times per day. Very little point in testing mg more then a few times pee week. Save your money and buy something that measures alk only and is more accurate.
I have read the problems many people have had with their tridents. The only one I had was getting it to prime initially which I fixed by squeezing the prime tube inbetween my fingers very hard all the wall down the line and then putting water in my mouth and blowing it thru the tube to make sure it was clear. Ever since that first day I have had no issues and I have followed all the instructions on testing and calibration as Neptune instructs. I know people who try and make reagent last longer by manually testing usually have problems because the system potentially clogs if it is not constantly running which with the chemicals and water running thru it is to be expected. I would never own a reef tank without one at this point. My only complaint is this piece of hardware can be very complicated if you let it be and try to do to much with it. I assume at some point it will be easier and with less programing but for now it does everything I need automatically in the app.
I bought my Trident in January 2021. The trident was kinda easy to set up and the trident did its job! Mine worked for me until March 2022. It stoped drawing water I tried fixing it only to find out the pump was broken. No problem I will call Trident. This is where I got frustrated. Neptune Apex has a very complicated way of mailing in the trident. The customer service team isn’t always the greatest I’m my experience. I called one time only for the man to sound a little upset WITH ME with my frustration. I would say it’s up to the person when buying this I was kinda happy with it I never had to bust out my kite that much!
It is an invaluable tool to chase numbers. That said, for us number chasers, would be cool to test Phosphate and Nitrate as well. The readout on Apex's app is also strange. All other monitors/testers show as graphs and these 3 parameters show as numbers in beakers (unless you click on it). Really wish it would just show consistency over time vs the most recent reading by default. Otherwise, excellent product.
followed the directions and had no problems setting it up. rarely hear it when it runs unless it very quiet. very happy with my decision to buy this item.
My Trident performed flawlessly for 2 years when it suddenly was inaccurate and leaking water and reagent. I contacted support and they arranged for a zoom call with a very nice and knowledgeable tech named Carlos. Within an hour the Trident was working well. I am very impressed with the company and it's customer support.
This product is so terrible that it makes me rethink Neptune as a company. Over three weeks, I've had continual problems. At least daily, I'm getting: Test A (or B or C) failed, or Bad Alk (or Mg or Ca) range, or No water sample. Once I didn't get any errors at all, just had reagent and water all over the floor. The Trident will have a failure, I reset it or factory reset it several times, it'll do more tests successfully, then have another problem. I was hopeful and ignored the reviews on here. Don't be like me!
This $600 piece of reefing gear feels cheaper than a childs toy and is inconsistent at best. I'm at a point where I don't use their calibration solution because it causes wild inconsistencies (7.5 dkh to 10 dkh) when there aren't any, it was just their shoddy calibration solution. Ultimately, I can't trust this equipment for what it's supposed to do which is provide reliable test results. The idea is sound, but this product is not market ready. They did a good job of beating their competitors to market but that's the only success Neptune can claim with the Trident.
Awesome concept, but terrible quality, and customer service. I had originally purchased my Trident from BRS roughly six months after they were released and the original unit was fantastic ... for a year. After the initial year I started running into continual testing errors and after going back and forth with Neptune systems they decided my unit was no longer functional and sent me a replacement. When I received my replacement, my Apex EL base until died on me so I then had to start the TS'ing and return process with Neptune systems for that, which for the record is slow and requires deposits that are not refunded for 6-10 weeks, if at all. After finally receiving a replacement base unit and trident I was relived to finally be back to automated testing however it wasnt even 2 montsh after that my replacement Trident started experiencing the exact same issue as the original. I contact a supervisor at Neptune systems who was aggressive, condescending, and downright rude. Probably the worst soft skills I have ever experienced from a customer service supervisor. Anyways the best they can do is take another deposit and send another unit which will be another month or so w/o automated testing. Oh and don't forget when your Trident quits on you your expensive reagents are wasted and I promise you that during the TS'in process you will almost assuredly have used more than the one replacement set that Neptune will offer you. Do yourself a favor and buy something from a better quality brand. Additionally the Apex base unit is totally incapable of staying connected which means your test results are useless at least 15% of the time.
I bought this and the full apex as a bundle and the first one I received didn’t work correctly so I contacted Neptune who said they would send me a new one but I had to put a “deposit” down to cross ship it even though it was brand new, after two different cross shipments I got one that works, the problem is the accuracy of this thing isn’t what they say it is, supposedly is 0.05 dkh 15ppm calcium and 15 ppm magnesium, but my trident has always fluctuated 25-30 ppm for calcium and 20-25 for magnesium, the dkh is fairly accurate most of the time unles the reagent is running low and as for calcium as soon as that bottle gets below 20% my readings go down about 50ppm with is completely unacceptable considering the price of the reagents, I do like the trident and it is handy for not having to manually test the basic three and for the most part I don’t manually test any longer, but you just need to beware on how and when your trident will fluctuate so you don’t start dosing extra 2 part for no reason, also the “calibration solution” sucks and I have to use my titration and Hanna checker to get my parameters and use my tank water to calibrate the trident, otherwise the numbers are completely wonky.
I have had two trident since they were released. Amazing product and I just recently did the maintenance swap with NEPTUNE. Excellent customer service as always. No idea how all these negative comments are being posted. Nothing but a great product.
I give it 4 stars but it is a good piece of equipment but of course could be better. Perfection on ca and mag are not necessary at all for success but the alk testing is very good in my opinion.
One reviewer summed up the Trident best, "it's not ready for the market." I can't even imagine how many of these have been returned or exchanged. I'm sure a few have even been tossed in the trash bin. I was skeptical of the negative reviews and decided to buy the Trident anyway. It was dead on arrival. I spent 5 hours trying to fix it. Too much time for a product that was brand new. I still give the product 2 stars because it has great potential, and Neptune has shown they can make excellent products like Apex. Trident is just not ready for prime time.
I've been using Trident from the beginning and the Trident is a great product. With any mechanical/technical piece of equipment comes a learning curve. I am NOT tech savvy or mechanically inclined and if I have any questions or needed adjustments made to the programming for my specific needs, the tech support guys are superb and very capable of helping me to resolve my issues & educating me on how to accomplish what I need done with the Trident. Most of my issues are "user error". Carlos recently walked me through flushing out the Trident and got it working great. Saves me a lot of time from the testing I have had to do in the past to keep the parameters stable.
worked great for about 9 months. now readings bounce lie crazy for the last few months. now my whole system has pretty much failed to the point that the spinner magnet is literally bouncing around the whole chamber even when its not in testing. just my luck this happens 3 days before i leave town. not sure how i feel about this system anymore.
At initial setup the trident was spot on with my Hanna checkers (I have two Hanna; DKH & PPM). but in less than a month, the reading started being way off. I contact customer service and they did all kind of troubleshooting. The part that had me was when the customer support told me that if the Hanna and trident reads the same difference in 24hrs, then the product is working fine.....WHAT!!!!!!! So which is correct? I don't care if they show the same difference. Of course they say the Trident is more accurate than the Hanna, but I don't see where both my Hanna checkers are very close in reading, but the trident is around 1DKH lower and is the more accurate one. To try and dial in my Alk, I cut down on the dosing. The Hanna showed a decline in Alk (which it should), while the trident reading have my DKH going up. it's a nice concept, but it is a expensive piece of junk.
I'll give it 2 stars because it is great when it works. I really love the accuracy since I am color blind and cannot use normal tests. However, I am now on my 3rd service request in 5 months for it not working. Yes, their service has been there. But each time is filling out a ticket, then scheduling a phone call, then disassembling the thing to do service on it. Being my 3rd call, I already know the routine and tried everything they would tell me to do with no good result. I just have zero faith in this $600 piece of equipment now. 3 service calls in 5 months....not looking good for 2-3 years from now. I am used to equipment like Tunze or GHL dosers that last for many years. This is cheap junk and I regret my purchase.
It's saved me on a couple occasions already over the past 12mo which easily would have cost more if a crash happened. In general there is a small learning curve to the system. Some of that is simply understanding how to get repeatable results from a testing platform and not necessarily specific to the Trident. Some is knowing how not to over react if a result is suddenly off. My biggest two gripes at this point are: 1) Not being able to get calibration solution separately because I've forgotten to go back and put the line back in the tank. They've sent for free so far but I doubt they always will. 2) Future request is maybe more relevant but being able to pick which tests I want. IE: buy the unit and then buy reagent for which tests I want to do. This may not be practical... I personally would not let it automate dosing, at least not for awhile until you get the hang of it and understand how to use the fail safes in programming.
When Trident fails, support sends you this agreement to sign which waves all liability for them. They want you to enter this program to help tech support figure out what is wrong with the Trident because of the overwhelming failures after 18 months. Once you sign up for this you are told you have to sign up for a service program. In order to get a refurbished Trident to use while yours is being fixed, you have to put down a $300 deposit and then pay $200 to be apart of the program. Plus the warranty only last 180 days. So I guess after that you will have to spend another $200 to get it fixed once it breaks again. They know they have a trash product and hold your feet to the fire to squeeze more money out of you to fix their defective product. Don't waste your money on this!!
When it works .. it does a good job. I am waiting for my 2nd replacement from Neptune. The original unit would not get past initialization. Support sent me a replacement. The replacement worked for a few weeks but then would not accept a software upgrade. Support took a look and determined it had a bad chip and ordered a replacement. For the several weeks it worked I was happy with the testing results.
Stability is the key to success. Before this, I tested as much as I could but that wasn't enough. I was struggling with SPS because of the lack of testing. When you start getting into SPS and grow coraline algae like no one else's business, once a week testing is no longer enough. This Trident saved my reef tank. I have had no issues with it. If there is a Con, I'd say the inability to have it as a stand alone unit. I have another tank that I don't want to add an Apex system to but would love to have a Trident on. Either way. Great product so far.
I’ll admit, I absolutely love having automated tests and when it works it’s beautiful. For the cost I am annoyed my B line from the reagent arrived kinked because it was tapped too tight and now C line was so tight it came loose and pushed about a cup or so of water into my stand. The machinery is above the PCB and a tiny leak has the potential to destroy the Trident or potentially cause a short. If the cost was less I would be happier with the product BUT to an extent like other Apex products the cost vs quality do not line up. I had seen forum posts about quality control is lacking specifically on the Trident and I bought it anyways expecting to deal with a sensitive instrument being temperamental but not less than a month after purchase. Would I buy again? Yes. The benefit outweighs my frustration with the product. I had decided to go all in on Neptune due to variety of products I can add on or integrate with and have accepted the premium is for that NOT quality of product.
I have had my Trident for just a little over a year now and could not be happier. Teamed up with my Dos this thing keeps my reef way more stable than I ever could. I have had zero problems out of mine. Has never skipped a beat. If you are thinking of this go ahead and go for it. I would recommend the Dos if you don't have one already for auto dosing.
Love the product and well worth the small price tag, perfect price point for something to help monitor and as cheap as it can be to do the job that needs to be done. Monitor is key with any automation it’s not a official test but perfect to make it so you only need to test once a month or every other
Have had it running a week and it's doing a great job. Right now I'm on 87% reagents left. This is everything I was looking for when it comes to finding a automatic testing of alk, ca, and mag. I saw someone else's tubing kinked but mine did not come kinked like theirs. I've had no issues yet.
Accurate enough and matches Red Sea and other test kits. I had an issue because I didn’t calibrate through 3 reagent kit changes. Dead on again after calibration. Just so easy. Price should eventually drop in half but they probably sunk a lot of time and money into this. Someone needs to invent a splitter to test two or more tanks.
I’ve had my Trident for 6 months now and I’m having nothing but good luck so far. I don’t anticipate having issues, the key is patience and following the directions. There’s always a learning curve with everything and this module is no different. I would recommend this to anyone who needs real-time status of their Alk/Cal readings. I didn’t give it 5 starts because nothing is perfect, 4 stars it is.
This is a product that has been growing on me over the last 6 months. I had an initial bad experience and that was mainly on my side to understand how to operate. It did have a learning curve for me, however; I have been really appreciating the daily reads and leverage it heavily to monitor my aquarium stability. My second call from support was great and they were great on follow-up.
Being a lazy reefer is almost not accepted in the hobby. This tests 4 times a day which has helped out and hooked up with a DOS and apex, Lets you know whats going on with your reef anytime of the day 24/7. Yes nothing is 100% accurate but having that ability to test when ever you want is priceless.
The concept is fantastic! The quality of this product is what you would expect from the rest of the product line made in china, flimsy plastic and need to send it in for maintenance every once and a while. This leaked all over my stand, the reagents are expensive and hard to get a hold of at times. This has a lot of potential but I would wait until further develpment.
I wanted to make a two month update because some have had issues with the reagent running out before the two month mark . I have not had one issue with my trident all numbers are spot on with Hannah checkers and I use the trident with my Dos . I run the standard 4 test a day and I had 8 estimated test left which would be exactly two months . So as for the two month supply claim it seems to be spot on . And I’m one that does not tinker with equipment once it is set up and configured . I have had my whole apex since the 2016 came out and the only issues I have had was a temp probe crapped out and I got bad firmware update one time and a wav stopped at the year mark The system seems very solid and I highly recommend
I was really excited for my trident! I will give credit where it is due. It helped me to dial in my dosing pretty spot on. But for $600 it was pricey. I do not mind spending on my tank, I mean come one I have tens of thousands in the tank (I am sure you do to) and I am glad I never turned on the auto dosing feature. On to why my review of this product is unpleasant. This product just is not ready for market. It’s has now stopped working 3 times inside of the roughly 6-7 months I have had the product. When it does stop working, I now have to tear apart my entire “control” room to start working on the unit, disconnect etc. Not to mention the test started leaning to wayyyy off. In the beginning, say first 3 months they were great - double checked against Hanna and salifer But past that point the numbers have gone alllll over the place - high, low, spot on for a day, then back to high or low. I can assure you it was not my tank as I have always double check against trusty rusty test kits. It just seems to me they have prematurely released the product in the eyes of profit when it was not ready for market and was not a piece of equipment you are buying for long term.
I have had mine up since June 22 . All my values are spot on with my Hannah checkers . Install was a breeze . Very happy only complaint is the material of the trident is very flimsy , for 600.00 you would think it would be a better grade plastic and the tray would not feel like it would break very easy . So come on Neptune 300 laptops from Walmart are made out of better plastic .
I got this the day it was released and couldn't be any happier. Even though I think doing a couple test per day would work (maybe not for the unit) I'm OK with the number of test. For the amount of livestock I have, $200/yr is worth it. I haven't had any issues (knock on wood) as far as lines leaking, bad test, calibration issues etc. I pretty much let it do it's thing and then change reagents and calibrate. My Mag and CA stay pretty constant and when I calibrate it seems good as well. I haven't cross checked it for "accuracy" with other test kits but everything seems to be doing well. If it is between buying the "next big thing" and purchasing a trident, I will recommend the trident. STABILITY is key to a successful reef.
Worked great for the fist month and a half, after the first exchange of reagents, that’s when the problems started no sample water, bad test A, and C the list goes on. All you can do is a restart/reboot witch does not work all the time. Hope fully they can fix these bugs soon; for this price point it should work better. Great concept I wish it worked better.
Having a nano tank, I've been a little anxious about keeping my tank solid and stabile. Especially since I live in New York City and I'm in and out of the apartment. The simple design and simple way it works, is everything I needed for piece of mind to finish adding corals to my system.
I got this to test my water while I go away on longer trips for work and vacation I waited a month to write my review and simply put it just works. I have changed out the A reagent now and got a spot on test checked with my red sea kit. Each time i've checked with my red sea they've been extremely close (down to degrees of accuracy). I love it and am glad I got it!
Alk measurements are solid but over time calc/mag measurements can be questionable (esp if reagent runs low or unit has age). A unit that has been running over 10 months now does not hold calibration past a month which requires re-calibration and wasted reagent. It is rare to get more than 1.5 months out of a 2 month reagent kit at the lowest testing interval. Cost of reagents are high and will add up over time. Unfortunate they do not offer an alkalinity only version and alk only reagent refills.
This unit has been out on the market for a while now. Over a year as far as i remember. I finally jumped the gun and got one. I was waiting for the Xepta but its not even out yet in the U.S. and probably wont be out for a while. This unit is built ok. Its not cheap cheap plastic. But it doesnt look like it could handle being dropped on the floor. Setup was pretty straight forward. Took about 30 mins. I doubled checked the values from the trident with my Hanna Check and the Red sea test kit for Ca & Mg. Its pretty close. (I didnt expect it to be exactly the same but its close enough). I will continue to spot check it here and there but This machine is well worth the money. As we all know, everyone has a life to live and doesnt have time to test every day or what not. Now if you have a Calcium reactor, I dont know if it will be worth it to get this machine because your alk and calcium levels should be stable for the most part. But given the amount of money some reefers invest in this hobby, this is definitely worth the investment. Especially if you dose 2 part alot. Dont focus too much on the values. Focus on the overall values and stability of the values. I wasnt look for it to be 100% precise. But it tells me if the values are stable and that i dont have swings. Note* the minimum test for alk is 4 times per day and for Ca & Mg is 2 times per day. Also NOTE* make sure you stock up on Reagents. Neptune says 12 months max. Because as of this date 4/27/2020 we are dealing with COVID 19 and it is literally hard to get the reagents. I Live in Central florida and WWC and TSA dont have em. They are being released sporadically on BRS and Saltwaterquarium.com as well. You dont want to run out of reagents. Thats like having a Ferrari but no Gas. Lolz If your on the fence. Get it. Its well worth the money. And follow the darn Directions. Its not that hard.
Alk seems ok, cal and mg are way off and support is worthless. I stopped dosing for a few days to baseline consumption before switching to AF dosing. Both Hanna and Red Sea confirm a drop in all parameters as expected. The Trident shows a small drop in MG and no drop in calcium. Morgan at Neptune says the Trident is working fine. Crazy bad support. Typical Neptune. Hoping another option comes along.
As far as the equipment goes, I'd give the Trident system a solid 5 stars. The tests are always spot on when double checking results, and their is almost zero work once calibrated. But the major problems are with the reagents. They are constantly out of stock, and don't last anywhere near the time advertised. The machine must run 4 minimum tests per day to maintain calibration, which not only is unnecessary, but a waste of reagent/money. I assumed having a "manual" option setting testing up daily or every other day would have been possible. I don't need my alkalinity tested 4x/day. No one does. At $600 for the unit, and closer to $300/year in reagents, I just wouldn't recommend this product, unless you really have the money to spare.
Have had the trident for approximately two months. It is simple to setup, and once setup requires no tinkering except for replacing the reagents. Coupled with the DOS, you can dial in ALK and CA to your liking and it stays rock steady. Two glaring problems though: Reagent supply is insufficient for the demand, its also costly and does not last as long as it says. Secondly there is no ability to set manual testing times. The minimum testing is 4 times a day for ALK and 2 for Mg and Ca. This obviously uses a ton of reagents, but there is no way to just do it once a day or twice a week. You can only test on the set schedule (which does go up to 24 times in a day if you want that.) Hopefully in the future we'll be able to set our own testing times and save money on reagents.
I’ve had it setup for a few weeks now. Install was very simple so long as you follow the instructions. My readings are a little wavier than I hoped but definitely as good as testing manually and I’m able to tweak my DOS pumps whenever I feel like which is fantastic. I ran 12 tests/day for 48 hours, then 8 for 72, and now I’m at 4 tests long term. Really helped me to dial everything in. I wish the drain tubing was just a little longer. I think they guessed at what most people would want and since my setup is non-standard, I’m not knocking a star for that. I do think the shape is a little odd. I feel that they went for style with the design and I wish they had gone for function. A simpler more rectangular shape would have been sufficient. The pyramid shape makes it a bit tricky to fit in; especially since they suggest it be above your sump or wherever it draws water from. Very happy with it. Really is the greatest advancement in the fabledULM setup since the AWC using DOS pump system.
I have had reef tanks off and on for 5+ years with various levels of success. I have been able to maintain and accurately test for NO3 and Phosphates but never felt like I had a grip on my Alk/Ca/Mg. In the past it was always a best guess and replenishment came via inconsistent water changes (to control the NO3/phosphates. With my “dream” tank I decided to commit to testing and understanding more parameters as well as dosing. Unfortunately (most likely due to user error) testing with both Hannah Checkers and Red Sea test kits I always get different results and don’t know what to trust (especially with the calcium). I would test 4 times over 48 hours then setup and tweak my DOS pumps but would find my Ca shooting up rapidly only to compare it to the other test kit and find a different number. I would test 2 or 3 times with each test kit because I had no confidence in the numbers, the kits, or my methodology. Enter the Neptune Trident. If this device lives up to the hype, coupled with great life support equipment (pumps, lights, etc), it will be the key to unlocking the SPS tank for the average aquarist. Setup was incredibly easy (follow the instructions). It required a firmware update and it was up and running. I set it to 8 tests a day so I could get a great picture of my aquarium and once I’ve got my dosing dialed in I’ll roll it back to 4 times a day. The drain and sample lines: are too short. 10’ would have been more ideal (you can always just loosely spool them). Not sure if 5’ was the maximum or just the number Apex chose to use so it’s hard to fault them here. I assumed the water lines were standard airline tubing; they are not. This means you can easily extend the drain line by feeding it into a wider diameter tubing (like ro/di tubing). The actual unit is the same quality as other Neptune Apex equipment. Decent but not Kessil/Ecotech grade plastic... in signature grey. It is much smaller than I was expecting which was a great surprise. The shape of the unit is somewhat confusing. Typically something like this will be hidden and so making it a simple cube would have been more efficient. The artsy form factor just seems somewhat unnecessary. It does make noise but it really isn’t bad. Especially since it’s only 4 times a day (for most installs). If you run AC pumps or power heads you won’t notice it. The maintenance thing: Finding out there’s a $200 servicing fee required every year or so (or a $100 DIY kit) was kind of a shock and Neptune should have been more forthright with this information. I actually didn’t learn about it until mine was in the mail. It wouldn’t have changed anything for me, but might for others and BRS should probably be telling people when they call them. I think they thought this would be less of a big deal for people who drop thousands of dollars on their equipment but the forum backlash seems to tell a different story. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. I’m very happy with my purchase and really feel like this was the final piece in my quest for an ultra low maintenance SPS tank.
All my comments is PERFECT. Btw, just like using a car needs tire and brake every year.
This thing is by far my favorite add-on I've ever added to my aquarium.Setup was a breeze, it was up and running in about 15 minutes. I've always loathed testing and would put it off for as long as possible. Now I don't have to worry and can just log in to Fusion to see my current levels. The tests are consistent and it's helped me stabilize my dosing levels. The wait was well worth the product.
This is a nice addition to my reef tank - particularly since I have gotten lazy and mostly stopped testing. I've only had it for a week, so not giving 5 stars. It has worked flawlessly so far - if it still is after a year, add a star. Substantially different than my hanna for alk (latter higher by 0.1). Assuming calibration solution is right, trident is correct.
I have both the KH guardian and Trident. Guardian uses pH titration classical method for calculation of alkalinity while trident is likely using colorimetric method similar to hanna alk checker. Both systems give similar results for alkalinity in terms of precision and accuracy. Advantage of KH guardian is that homebrew of "reagent" is straightforward which enables testing every 1 hour for free which is not economical for Trident where vendor supplied reagents must be used. Trident is infinitely easier to setup than kh guardian which took days of tweaking to optimize precision and accuracy using help from their facebook community. Of course only the trident has CA and Mag testing which may be helpful to some reefers. Combination of trident and Dos provides an extremely powerful way to flatten out the Alk diurnal cycle that is not easily replicated by advanced apex programming. Support for KH guardian is minimal from the inventor and obtaining repair parts long term may be a concern.
First thing, I couldn't believe how easy this thing was to setup. The interface and user graphs are very helpful. I have never been big on testing just because there was always something else to do with my aquarium, but the Trident takes all the work out of the 3 main parameters and has probably already completed more tests than I have done since I started the tank. It was a bit of a wait for this thing to get to market but the wait was worth it. Can't wait to see what Neptune has in store for more automated testing.
This product is a game changer! I know more about my tank than I ever have before! Set up is easy and you get test results within minutes!
All I can say is WOW! Setting up is a breeze First test for alk, Ca, Mg. 7.94, 455, 1436 Manual testing with hanna Alk 8.1, Ca 449 and Mg with Aquaforest kit 1440 RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX! This is my first automated testing system and boy am I glad I went with Trident
