I was hesitant to buy a chiller for years because of the upfront cost, but it’s only May and my tank was already hitting 83+ degrees. Obviously, I had to take action....surface fans and the room AC just weren’t cutting it. Of all the equipment I’ve installed on my tank, this chiller was the easiest to set up. I’m using a 1/4 HP chiller on my Red Sea Reefer 350, mostly with future-proofing in mind so I can eventually use it on a larger tank. It’s plumbed with a SICCE Syncra Silent 4.0 Multifunction 951 GPH pump dedicated solely to the chiller. Due to space constraints and my existing UV setup, I couldn’t plumb the chiller into the display return line as commonly recommended. Instead, I placed the pump in the sump next to the display's overflow pipe, with the outlet returning water to the same chamber, next to the overflow that leads into the final return chamber. It works just fine this way! The chiller kicks on for about a minute every 10 minutes. It’s relatively quiet, comparable to a mini fridge, and not at all annoying. One thing that surprised me is how compact it is. I have it resting outside the stand on the left side of the aquarium cabinet. I barely managed to plumb this with 10 feet of 3/4” braided vinyl tubing, but I’d highly recommend getting 12 feet instead to give yourself more flexibility and routing options.
I had an old Baytech Aquarium CHI-250 chiller that did the job for my old tank that had the sump in a fish room downstairs. When I upgraded to the new tank (after 9yrs with the old) I didn't quite realize how loud the old chiller was, until the new setup has everything in the living room. This new JBJ 1/4 runs as quiet as a box fan. You hear the fan but it's not bad, this JBJ also cools the water about 1/3 faster then my old chiller, and both were the same 1/4 HP. Also, according to my apex outlet, it consumes 434W @ 4.7A, which is about 15% lower then my old chiller. Supper happy on the performance, and operating noise of this chiller.
Living in the central valley part of California where it reaches over 116-117F outside temperature and the house ambient temperature around 85-88F (maintained with household AC) the system maintains a nice constant 77F. Very robust so far, it has been going for about 2 years now. Knock on wood for many more years of service. Just be sure to clean and blow out your chiller condenser coils and refrigeration components every year or so as for preventative maintenances.
While I am happy with the effectiveness of this chiller, you should be aware that oversizing it for your tank volume is not helpful. These chillers operate withing a 2 degree fluctuation cycle, meaning if you set it for 78F, it will turn on at 79F and off at 77F, approximately, depending on your calibration. An oversized chiller will run through these cycles faster than one that is smaller. Just my two cents.
I had this chiller and the compressor went out after a year of use. It's a closed system so there isn't a way to charge it back up if you were able to replace the compressor. Long story short way to expensive for 1 year of use so I'll stick to fans.
I purchased the 1/4 HP Artica about two weeks ago. So far, it was one of the best investments I made for my 120g reef tank. It works great and I have no problem maintaining a constant temp on my tank.
My 1/4 HP Artica is going on 8 years with flawless operation. Works great and has no problem keeping my 92 gallon corner tank and 25 gallon sump just right. I'm considering plumbing mine through the wall and building a small ventilated shed outside so the heat does not warm up my house on a hot day. All-in-all a great product!
I plummed it in, let the water flow, checked for leaks, no leaks. Turned it on set the temperature, and let it go. Its been running for two days with out fluctuation in temperature. My return pump is louder than the actual cooler. I really like the video demos provided for the equipment that is sold on Bulk Reef Supply, I think that's what sold me on the actual system.
I have 125 Gallon display and 30 gallon sump, 8 T5's. Before I got the chiller, the display would get up to 82 - 83 Deg F. Since I installed The chiller, the display stays at 77.5 Deg.
75g tank + 30g sump have been running on this chiller for 2-3 years now. Rock solid, easy to setup & use. Keeps the temp steady on the system, even when running the metal halides. Avoiding parboiled livestock is critical summertimes in the desert Southwest! Well thought-out design, comes with a variety of connectors, easy to read LED temp indicator - product picture shown is with the system off.
I primarily purchased this for a controller free 65 gallon setup and it worked flawlessly. Upgraded to a 150 and this thing still rocks! I have to say that I will purchase another in the future if the situation presents itself.
I'm running a 1/4 HP on a 110g tank w/ 30g sump at 77 degrees with a RKE and temp probe for the control with a +/- 0.2 degree range. It holds the temperature steady at 77 even with an outside temperature of 108, (90+ inside). Each time the controller turns on the chiller, the chiller has a 3 mninute start up period before the chiller begins to chill the water which helps with power spikes.
This things works great. The only issue is the largest barb connector supplied with this is 0.75". I run a 1" line and had to use a 1.25" rubber coupling to a 1.25" to 1" barb to attach my 1" hose. Had to stretch a short piece of tubing over the chiller nipples after Teflon taping to keep it from leaking when adding the rubber coupling. The flow seems to have doubled now, as I run my sump return line for the main 140 gallon tank circulation with a Sicce Syncra 10 pump. I have asked the manufacturer three times what size are the nipples so I can buy the correct size female socket to 1" barb and I've gotten no answer. It is metric and probably 30mm? It's hard to find metric PVC fittings here in the US. This would be a more permanent connection. A 1" barb connection should also be supplied in the box.
Want with this one due to others recommendations. Wanted quiet. And it is! My skimmer is defiantly louder and this is outside the cabinet. When it turns on it is audible but hardly. The jbj calculator seems to be accurate to my needs.
I had an issue with high temps in Massachusetts - yes it does get warm - so I bought the JBJ to ensure no live stock loss. to try it out I cranked up the heater and turned down the temp - unit kicked on and did not shake rumble or hum enough to annoy the wife - this is a keeper
Have this chiller on my 90 gallon. It's last me three years without a problem.
I purchased a used version of this chiller. After taking it apart and cleaning it, I feel that this is a very well built chiller. When running the chiller is very quiet.
I own this chiller for my 110 gal tank i did not buy this from BRS at the time i was looking i did not know about BRS. I should have done my research i over paid at foster& smith man was that really dum of me BRS is much cheaper.this chiller has been on my tank for 5 yrs works like a champ knock on wood it iis quiet you got to get it
