I've had my 1/3 HP unit for 20 years now. No issues, just keeps running. And in the summer, it runs a lot! Probably start to consider purchasing a back up next time BRS has a sale.
This is my 2nd unit, the 1st one lasted 10 plus years customer service is A1
Best chiller on market
I have this chiller for about two years now. Last year in February my tank was damaged due to freeze here in Texas and my tank didn’t have power for four days. Fast forward my tank end up in the garage in March-October. I live in Texas and temperature in my garage average from 90-105 degrees in the summer. I used this chiller to cool my tank and kept the temperature to 78 day and night! I still have this chiller and will be using it forever. I’m amazed, very reliable!
My AC went out yesterday and I am literally hours away from catching a plane. My tank temp shot up to 81 degrees. It took only 20 minutes to setup this chiller including the plumbing. So EASY! My temp dropped almost a degree within the hour. This chiller saved my reef tank.
For 2 years I struggled to maintain a consistent temp. In the Florida winters it was easy keeping it around 78. In the summer it would jump to 83-84. Increased surface agitation, added a new cover, left the ceiling fan on 24/7, left stand doors open, and even added a fan in the stand. Our A/C was set to 78 but the tank is on the west-facing side of the house and the room has a 3-5 degree difference with the location of the thermostat. This summer I adjusted our A/C to 76 and while this helped bring the tank down to 81-ish, our power bill went up $100 a month. I was able to buy this 1/3 HP chiller as an open box which saved a few bucks, and after installing it I now wished I had just invested in it long ago! No more open stand! No more fans! A/C back to 78! This thing is a powerhouse! Fan noise is most of what you get, and as a previous reviewer mentioned it sounds like a window A/C unit, but is perfectly acceptable IMHO. If you have major temperature swings and have tried everything else, get a JBJ chiller!
I works well and does the job for my 400 gal reef. The only negative comment is it does not come with a 1" Elbow Hose Barb.
I have this chiller now for a year and it does the job on maintaining my aquarium temperature. The noise level is pretty low. All I hear is the air from the fan. Great product.
The chiller is very well made and the material used are superior to others, its a low noise power house ! Love it! its just a few more inches wider than other models but you will be able to move up to 2400 GPH thru it ! in most cases you will be able to have it in the main return line to the tank with no restrictions.
I had a 1/4HP on my 120 years ago and had good luck with it so I thought I'd try out the 1/3HP on my RSM S-650. So far so good. It works as advertised. I can definitely hear it when it kicks on, but its not overly bothersome.
I have one of these bad boys on my 300 gallon reef tank w/ 50 gallon sump. I didn't buy this chiller from BRS, I bought mine used. I estimate that the chiller already had a few years of mileage on it and I have been using it for at least 3 years with no major issues. Most recently, the temperature sensor failed, but JBJ Lighting, has replaced the part at a very reasonable cost. They even serviced my unit (complete unit flush, safety inspection, leak inspection, etc). I highly recommend this unit!! If you live in S. Cali, even better as JBJ is local and will take care of any issues you may have.
I have three of them one for my 300 gallon tank, one for my 240 (with 70 gallon slave frag tank) and the third for my 180 (with 70 gallon slave frag tank). very reliable. I also have several 1/5 hp versions for my smaller tanks and they are equally good
Overall this is a good chiller, bring down my tank temp fast but a tad loud to my taste. It only run during the day so it's not really a problem.
Before i bought this chiller on my 210 i had major heat issues without any fans or addtional chillers this has been able to handle my tank and some. Ive had it over 10 years now and just this week my fuse blew. At first i thought i had to purchase another chiller and then i called JBJ and it was only a 6.39 purchase. GREAT PRODUCT, WORKS AS SUPPOST TO, Pretty quiet.
Couldn't be easier to use and set up. Works efficiently. It is in my living room and not quite as quiet as I hoped, but by no means would I consider it overly loud considering the size and what it is doing.
The JBJ Titanium Arctica Chiller 1/3 HP dose wonders on my reef/fish system, its a 180 G with a 75 G refugium and it keeps my system at 76 D. wished i got it sooner.
this chiller is great, its very quiet and keeping my tank cool.
That being said, this sucker is a bit loud for my tastes. I have the 1/10th HP model and it's a dream. Very quiet, makes a little more noise than a PC. Granted this one is 3 times the chiller. I was just hoping it would be as jaw-droppingly silent as the smaller sibling. The 1/3, I'd say, sounds like a decent size window AC when it comes on. Personally, I'd want it somehow soundproofed or located in a remote location.
Easy to set up, easy to program and reasonably quiet. I have mine in my living room on my 300 gallon tank so if it were too noisy it would be in issue. You can hear it when it first kicks on but then it is just a low hum.
