I've purchased this product a lot over the years and have always been pleased with the quality and the consistency of the product. It dissolves very quickly and cleanly. Corals and fish never have issues after water changes whether big or small. Thanks BRS and HW
No longer does this salt mix clear. High levels of lithium too. such a shame
This saltmix mixes to very low Alk at 6.7 to 7 dkH. Very poor quality control, since the stated alkalinity is 9dKH.
This salt has consistently mixed at 6-7 Dkh even though stated to mix around 9. Did not realize for some time as a newer hobbyist and killed significant amounts of corals due to quick changes in alkalinity when performing water changes. Very disappointed and unable to return due to purchasing with product on sale. Will not purchase again.
I was out of the hobby for 5 years and this was my go to, always mixed clean to the parameters listed. I'm not sure what happened but this salts fell off big time. I mixed it for 30 minutes using 4 buckets and a paint stirrer on my drill. There's no way it wasn't mixed perfectly. Alk and cal are super low and outside of ideal reef tank parameters. Mag is ok- but my PH with this salt is also low probably bc of the low alk cal. All other features and benefits of a salt go out the window if we can't be confident that it mixes to where it should- and if it doesn't it should at least be in the right range.
Completely threw my tank parameters out of wack, I make sure to vigorously shake my salt to mix it as well. My calcium was off the charts and my Alk was unbelievably low. Had to switch brands.
Been using this in my tanks for about 6 months now. I heat the water to 78 and let it circulate with a powerhead for 24ish hours before use. All my corals are happy, mixes up very clear, and my parameters are stable. I don't test the dKH of the batch, but I dose All For Reef and doing a 10% water change weekly I don't see my alk dip below 8. Knocking off one star because it does leave a bit of residue in the mixing bin, which is kind of annoying to clean out between batches.
Box came in at 7 dkh, 1100 Mg, and 517 Ca. FWIW I used Hanna checkers.
I've used this salt for years and never had a problem. I usually buy 6 of these at a time on Sale. The last 2 boxes I've been through though have fallen short. Alk in New water has only mixed at 5.9-6.4 checked via aquaforest and Hannah. Magnesium is only coming in a 1050-1100 between the 2 boxes of salt. Calcium stays high though 450-550 consistently between the 2 different boxes. I'm not sure what changes as I've never had a problem with this salt mixing to stated levels before. I used to get by with just weekly water changes on my nano tank with this but have recently started to have to dose alk and mag. Maybe I just got 2 bad batches but once I'm done with this salt I think I may try something else.
Mixes unevenly. At the bottom of my Brute can have these bigger solids which I believe are magnesium/calcium additives. I don’t have the strongest of mixing power heads atm so I have to manually stir these larger solids for them to dissolve. Alkalinity is lower and ph is around 7.7 when salt is fully dissolved. I also have undissolved particles floating around my tank from using this subpar salt mix. I switched to Nyos salt and that mixes really good.
I've been using this salt for years. I liked that it's fully synthetic, and dissolves fast. Corals were never bothered by it. Numbers used to be fine. Also, I test my tanks for chemical parameters regularly, and check my own technique against ICPOES at intervals. But, for the last few orders now (6 months to a year), HW-Marinemix Reefer has fallen abysmally short of what we can expect. The chemical mixture is a disaster. At first I thought that I just got a bad batch, or maybe the salt had separated during shipping, but even after thoroughly mixing the current box/bag, and preparing to 78 degree temp and 34 ppt salinity, here are the values: Calcium 420, Alkalinity 6.3 (!), Magnesium 1740 (!), and Potassium 360 (!). To call a salt with these numbers 'Reefer' is ABSURD! It doesn't even have as much alk as normal sea water. At least the nitrate and phosphate levels were 0. So yes, this explains why my mag levels are always high in all tanks, and I have had to increase my alk dosing in my nano. TO BRS: I'd suggest you contact this company, and ask for an explanation and free replacement of all existing stock. As far as I am concerned, this salt as it currently is available is a DANGEROUS product. Not sure what I'll switch to. Might try the ESV component seawater system, as I can then adjust each level individually in the finished water. More work to prepare, though.
All of my parameters are spot on with the advertised numbers except dkh. The dkh tested a day after mixing salt with RODI came out to only 2.8.
I switched over from TM Pro Reef expecting to get ~9dkH and greater than 410 ppm calcium. I am getting the alkalinity but am getting ~380ppm calcium. I've measured using 3 different test kits and they all read the same thing. This is from making 2 batches of ~40-45 gallons of new saltwater. This is the first box of 3. I will post results when I mix another batch using box 2.
Recently mixed my first 40 gal batch and got good results. Tested with my new Hanna 9in1 and here are the results: Ca 404 Mg 1440 Kh 8.5 Ph 8.2 Salt mixed fast with my sicce pump on the bottom of the brute container. No issues. So far so good.
Switched to this from RS black bucket, as the black bucket does not store very well. I mix up a months worth of water changes at a time and store them in buckets. Levels stay stable throughout. Coral responded really well to the change. I have noticed my batches tend to mix up closer to 10dkh, but with a 10% weekly change and using All-For-Reef its generally stable right around 9dkh. Has good clarity once mixed, the only downside is it does leave a bit of residue in my mixing bin, but its not much to wipe it out between batches.
Alk after mixing is below 7. Won’t buy again. I shouldn’t have to test the salt mix I spent 80$ on. They should just make it correct to the specifications listed. Truly Embarrassing, how do you let your product to the shelves when it’s clearly not the proper mixture you are targeting.
I was looking for something cleaner and longer lasting than the Coral Pro I've been using. I just cleaned up the 54 gallon barrel I've been using to mix SW in and cleaned all the brown crud at the bottom. I have a 210 gallon SPS dominant tank with a 40 gallon sump. I change 30-40 gallons at a time. BRS recently did a review of salt mixed and I was surprised at how quickly the Coral Pro parameters dropped. I decided on the HW Reefer despite the range of reviews. When I got the box (wish it had a nice bucket like my previous mix) I noticed that there are no mixing instructions. So I called BRS saying I understand starting with a half cup per gallon of RODI, BUT should I heat the water first to x degrees, heat to tank temp, or mix at room temp? I was told to mix at room temp, let it mix for 24-48 hours with a power head and then bring it to tank temp before using it. Following those instructions it mixed up at: pH 8.0 Kh 9.3 Ca 480 Mg 1320 Happy enough with those numbers that I ordered another as it's on sale. Not sure why the pH is slightly low. I checked it with my Hannah meter and my Salifert kit. Both read 8.0 as does my display tank.
I bought this salt because it was a great brand and the quality was always great. Alk was always around 9. COVID and the supply chain crisis hit, I ordered extra boxes. Now the salt mixes with a brown residue, not as quickly and the alk sits at about 7.7. If I wanted this quality of product I would have bought IO. Very disappointed in the new quality.
So I initially had the same problem as most people with lower alk etc, but had the same with tropic Marin. I read forum posts about how precipitation was the issue and cut down my mixing time to 30 minutes with no heater. Alk bumped up to around 8.5. I think most people aren’t mixing these salts right. As to whether the price is justified that’s up to you. A lot of the extra cost is shipping from Germany. I like the quality and short mixing time. If I had reef crystals I would mix for a longer period of time and keep testing it to see how much precipitates. An experiment in this would be great. Just my 2 cents.
After dealing with bad sailt mix from Turkey I thought maybe try HW Marine Mix. (BRS recommend) it was sapose to run 9 dkh. Tested my first batch of salt water and only got 6.5 dk with Hanna tester. Not what I was expecting.
Like the other reviewer below me my last batch of this salt was way off on alk/etc. Alkalinity was consistently coming in at 6.6 on my Hanna checkers. Everything was off and needed additives.
Mixed up a few batches out of this box, consistently mixing 6.5 dkh, 465 calcium and 1180 magnesium at 1.026 SG, 78 degrees. Tested with Neptune Trident, API, and RedSea on 3 different batches of ~35 gallons. I'm having to play mad scientist to make this salt usable. As much as I spent to get a box of this stuff, based off of BRS investigates numbers, I would expect to not be having to dump tons of additives in to reach a starting point. I won't be buying this salt again.
Great clean salt mix but unfortunately alk mixes to more like 7 wish it was actually 9
After years of using Red Sea Blue Bucket I wanted to find something that mixed a little faster and a little cleaner with an alk in the 8-9 range. I settled on this salt and now that I've finished my first box I'm happily ordering anther. I've been very happy with how it mixes and how well my tank looks. It isn't the cheapest salt but it isn't the most expensive either and I hope to keep using it for many years.
I've been using this salt on my 300 gallon system for years. Corals and fish never flinch with a water change. Hope you get in stock soon and hope dirt bag politicians don't have it held up in some shipping port.
I've used this salt in the past without any problems however my recent shipment has been nothing short of a headache. My calcium has spiked up over 500 and alkalinity shot up over 10 with a simple water change and 15 gallons. Unfortunately, I have lost two high price SPS in the process. I don't know if it is just this box but I will never use this product ever again nor will I recommend it to anyone.
The last 2 boxes I bought, the salt clumped together and I have to used the hammer to break it. Did not see any damage from the seal bag.
Due to stock issues (Tropic Marin) I switched to HW on the recommendation of one of the BRS Folks. I’m very happy, not sure I understand some of the complaints about ALK, I test often and ALK mixes to 8.5-9.0 consistently. Mixes clear quite quickly and leaves nothing behind. The savings doesn’t hurt either. Thanks to HW and the BRS Staff.
I used Instant Ocean for about 15 years, but mainly FOWLR tanks. I started with some soft corals/leathers about 7 years ago and switched to HW Reef as it was recommended by a friend. I never had any issues with it, but as I started keeping more corals, I made the switch to Tropic Marin because all of the hype. As it is never available, I decided to go back to HW Reef and stick with it. It mixes clean and I have never run into any issues using it.
Decent salt mix, however I rate this at 2 stars as BRS advertises Alk at 9.0. This is completely false as I've tested over a dozen matches using Hannah checker and consistently get readings of 7.2-7.4 at 1.026 SG.
This is what I normally use. Mixes fast and clean with consistent parameters. Probably on par with Tropic Marin but less $ and pretty much always available.
This is my first time using this salt and I'm honestly disappointed. I wanted this salt since the parameters matched my tank without having to dose. When I opened the box, there were small holes in the bag holding the salt and the salt has large clumps from water getting in. I spent a couple of hours breaking down the clumps and mixing the salt evenly. When dissolved in water to 1.026 salinity, I kept getting consistent batches of 7.2-7.4 alk. Ca 430 pretty consistent with what was expected, but alk is definitely not at 9.0 as stated by BRS. I don't think I'll order this salt again from BRS. Will go back to TMP and have to dose alk manually
I went thru 2 boxes of this salt and both boxes had tiny bits of plastic in it. Both were purchased approx, 6 months apart. I believe the pieces of plastic were leaching silicates into my system as I was battling algae issues while using this salt mix. Since switching to another salt mix, my water no longer had bits of plastic in it and I'm seeing my algae issues rapidly clear up. I gave it 2 stars because the parameters were optimal, but the salt was not clean. Also dont expect to get 160 gallons of salt from this mix unless you mix it at 1.024 or lower, which is not optimal for a reef tank.
Best Match for my ALK no adjustment needed, easy to mix, clean and clear in 15 minutes. Fish and Corals very happy.
Been using this salt for awhile and quite like it. It is pretty comparable to Fritz blue box which i also used for awhile, only comparison i have. Went back to hw because it better matched my alk, Fritz was a little low for me. Hw usally mixes up between 8-8.5dkh for me after a good 24-36hrs. This and Fritz both mix up clean everytime so no complaints there, me or my tank dwellers. I have always questioned the 160 gallon claim, it seems closer to 150 in my estimation. What is up with that HW Marine? I rate you at 4.5 because of this.
I thought I would give this a try because its recommended by BRS. I mixed up two 5 gallon buckets and each had a power head to mix after a couple of hours I still could not see the bottom of either bucket. I added a circulating pump to each one and they somewhat cleared up in a couple of days but there is still small crystals throughout the water and there is a buildup of the crystals on the pumps and temperature probes. My guess is it’s not mixed up very good I checked the alkalinity with a Hanna checker and it was 14.4 (dkh) with the salinity was 33-34 and temp was 77 that seems pretty high to me. I didn’t bother checking other parameters with the alkalinity that high my guess is the calcium or magnesium will be high maybe both. Anyone want a 160 gallon package for a good price? I am going back to Red Sea coral pro.
I switched to this salt a little over a year ago. I really like that it mixes quickly and clean. I've never seen a residue left in my containers even after prolonged storage. I will continue to use it
I just switched over to this salt mix after cleaning out all the crud from the bottom of my holding container. It does mix crystal clear but NOT CLOSE TO 160 gal!! I got to 120 gal in the container and checked salinity expecting 1.029 or 1.028. It was 1.025!!!! If I went to 160 before checking I’d probably be at 1.020.
This hands down has to be the best salt mix I’ve encounter, I’ve done three water changes on my nano with this salt and what a diffrence in coral coloration and extension, I was using reef crystals, but not anymore! Mixes clean in half an hour and I have clean mixing containers! It really is worth the little bit more per gallon that it costs!
By far the best salt out there. Consistent and no residual clay based caking agents especially for large holding containers. Added amino acids and you’ll never try another salt mix out there.
I used Reef Crystals for a couple of years and it work good, but I didn't like the nasty crud left in my water container. I have used the HW for almost a year now and I love it. They corals look great and I don't have any more crud in my mixing container.
Been around the block and have tried all of the "good salts". I think HW is the best I've tried. Easy mix. Dissolves quick. Consistent levels every time when tested. Costs a bit more but I definitely feel it's worth it and won't use anything else.
Great salt, mixes clean and is clear in minutes, coraL growth is great, the best salt in my opinion. Long time user. I have tried and tested nearly every salt and this is what we use. The only other salt would recommend is tropic Marin. Water quality is no. 1 for a happy reef, with the included amino acids and bIocatalysts it covers all bases.
Mixed my first 30 gallons, mixed crytal clear within 15 minutes. @1.026 Alk 8.8 Ca 460 Mg 1380
I've been in the hobby for 20 years now and had never used this before.Ive always used IO or RS.The HW mix is far superior! It is 100% synthetic so you don't have to worry about binding agents like clay. Also mixes easily and you don't end up with crap in the bottom of your mixing container. It may be pricey ,but it is well worth every cent!
Love this salt. Mixes fast, clean, and consistent. Keeps my Alkalinity where I want it.
We've been using this salt for 2 years. Gives us a stable, consistent environment for our corals contributing to rapid growth and great color. Mixes clear within 10 minutes. We wait for a few hours to use it but from appearance it would be fine almost immediately. Would recommend this salt to anyone who wants to eliminate one area of possible hassles and problems.
Mixes well and noticeable coral growth.
I switched to this salt in anticipation of doing a modified Triton method for a new tank I have not set up yet. I have used RSCoral Pro since day one in my first tank and my present tank a JBJ RL45 and loved the mix. However, I am so glad I switched to the H-W Reefer mix. This stuff mixes quickly, clear, consistent test parameters and has no calcium deposition in my mix bucket (a big problem with the RS mix). I have made 6 water changes of 10% since purchasing the product. PH has been more manageable and there is a noticeable growth rate increase of my SPS and LPS. Dosing of my 2 part has had to be increased by 2.5ml/day. Can't wait to get an APEX for the new tank andset up.
1st time using this salt, all my prametera are dead on will update soon
My corals love this salt. They are thriving.
Third salt bran I have used and by far the best. No Precipitation. Parameters spot on for Triton.
I have used this salt since switching form a 60 gallon to a 150. Mixes great, doesn't leave a residue in my 30 gallon drum like others have experienced, and the corals seem to like it. Downside is the magnesium is over 1500 every time I test using the Salifert kit, and test multiple times to compare results. Thought I had set the doser up wrong initially, but rechecked and wasn't even dosing Mag yet. Other parameters always test good when water change is done, then I dose accordingly.
I used this and the Hw Professional many years ago until LFS stopped carrying it. Best salt I have ever used, mixed the cleanest and most consistent without alk being way high. Once I wss no longer able to get Hw I chased that high quality, clean, consistent, lower cost salt mix for many years. Only found Tropic Marin salts to be of equal quality but much higher in cost. Those that claim to have issues with this salt may be mixing with tap water, water that is too hot or cold or adding the salt too fast or before adding water and mixi g to 1.023 will yield low alk and ca since advertised levels are 1.025.
Mixes clear and no settling. Only complaint is I couldn’t find listed parameters. FYI mixes 9s dKh, 390 Ca, 1500+ Mg at 78 degrees and 35 ppm salinity
Switched from Reef Crystals by Instant Ocean to HW....immediately notice a difference in water clarity on my 300 gallon reef tank. Salt mixes very quickly at room temp and absolutely no residue in the container and mixes throughly with just a couple smallnpower heads churning things up. Have gone through about 200 gallons of water on the HW and with each change I see my water clarity improve, corals growing much better and more vibrant colors and very consistent water parameters. I maintain a 40 gallon change every 2 weeks and plan to continue using HW Reefer. Have already recommended to several friends, especially after they see my tank!
I forgot to mention, if my corals always stay this happy, and continue doing what I've always done to maintain proper parameters, it leaves me being able to trust this salt and not always have been 100% on top of testing. Sure it's good to know if and when you need to for dosing purposes. But for on a softie and lps tank, it maintains it all good enough to just let the tank be if you need to with regular water changes. It makes it easier for the hobbyist that may not have all the extra time to go into the deep end of the feeding world with dosing and everything else, it still provides what they need to maintain the tank, as well as still see great coloration and growth as long as parameters stay in safe levels and it stays stable. And with proper practice of procedures like carbon dosing, it will Still save anyone a lot of work and still have a beautifully colored tank with corals that grow and thrive very well.
I've used reef crystals for the most bit of my feeding life, tried seachem reef salt, Kent reef, and have tried others. Red seas is still really good too. But I was surprised at how much the corals love it and how well they are doing. So far, all my parameters are where I want them and with only doing water changes. Don't have tests yet for potassium and what not. But I haven't had corals this happy with just a salt mix change. I love that it doesn't leave anything behind in my mixing bin or on the pump. When I'm done, just rinse and set aside. Its always ready within about 30-40 minutes, and the corals don't close up from not 'aging' the water like many other salts. They barely even close any of at all like it doesn't shock them unless of course you pour a bunch too quickly over top of one like too much flow will do. And my biggest concern is how happy the corals are and how well the thrive and reproduce. I have always used the same feeding regimen, parameter levels, etc., and it amazes me at how much better they are doing just by switching to the HW reefer mix. I will always recommend this salt to any one that brings up the topic hands down. In my opinion, there's no better salt. I hope this salt will always be available, at least for my lifetime.
I have been using this salt mix for two years now. It produces consistent results everytime I mix.
I cant for the life of me understand what these people are complaining about. Ive never seen any residue after mixing. I mix 1/2 cup per gallon and its always a perfect 9 alk & 1.025 sal. This salt is by far the best.
I have been using this salt mix for about 2 years now and am very happy with it. I do not have any of the problems some other reviewers are stating. There is some residue in the mixing barrel, but nothing like the barrel I use to mix IO. All of my prameters are stable and where I want them for my reef.
1st Time using setting up new tank. Time will tell
Only bought one box mixed clear coral seemed happy
I tried this on a BRS recommendation. Lots of white gritty precipitation that covered everything in the mixing station once mixed to 1.026sg @ 79F. I had to scrub and rinse everything with a vinegar solution. An average of about 6.8dKH (Hanna tester/confirmed with reference solution). Low PH of about 7.8 (calibrated Apex probe). Potassium of 250ppm at best (Salifert). I had ordered three buckets at once. I tried two buckets and sent the third one back for a return. I'm still trying to fix my water parameters. I believe this was all caused by a batch with extremely low potassium. Trying to raise the dKH just caused more precipitation. I've switched to Red Sea. It tests within the range stated on the bucket like expected.
If ph instability and low alkalinity is your thing then this salt is for you! Into an clueless how so many people have had success with this salt. After waging war against my system trying to figure out why my alk would never go above 6.8 I decided to test the salt that "brs recommends " sure enough with a fresh batch mixed at a salinity of 1.023 the alk was 6.7. Very disappointed I'll go back to reef crystals!
I currently have a 16 gallon AIO Nano tank. It has been running exclusively with this salt for 2 1/2 years now and my readings are spot on. I had a few LFS even ask me what kind of salt I use when they do a free test reading for me. I love this stuff.
I mix up 7-10 gallons per week. I've used Reef Crystals, Tropic Marin Pro Reef, Aquaforest Reef Salt and now... HW- Marine mix. HW is the worst so far. There is so much crap that doesn't dissolve and just floats around in the water. I use a brute trash can and pump to mix and usually let it set for at least a day. Doesn't matter. I'll use up this box...but I won't buy it again.
This is a great salt. It is a little pricey but you get what you pay for. I have been using it for almost 2 years and it is very consistent and mixes fast and clean.
Bought this salt on BRS recommendation that is mixes easily and doesn't leave a brown crust in mixing vat. It does mix fast and clear, but maintaining alkalinity takes twice as much dosing and maintaining Ph is a constant struggle.
I switched from the Red Sea Pro to the Red Sea Blue bucket and then to this. I liked the pro before when I had only a few softies and fish because it was enough added Alk to hold over my tank until the next week. Then I started dosing and wanted to start with a more natural level of Alk/Calc so I went to the blue bucket. It was fine. Then on a whim I decided to try this salt and I have to say I like it even more. The corals seemed to respond to it, which has never occured to me by simply changing salt. My tanks parameters are very close to what this mixes to, so doing a water chage doesnt upset my tanks balance. I'm currently slowly lowering my alk parameters from 9 to 8 since my tank has been running unusually clean with basically zero nitrate/phosphate despite being overfed and no GFO or carbon dosing (its the overpowered refugium light I added I think sucking up the nutrients, I used a Mars Hydroponics LED from amazon in case your curious, its an absolute monster). Once the Alk is running at 8 instead of 9 I will have to figure out if this salt is still ok to use. I may have to switch to something with lower Alk, or simply program my doser to turn off for a day after water changes. The other thing I like about this salt is that it mixes EXTREMELY fast. I can mix 20 gallons for my water change in like 10 minutes. I let it age for an hour, but I dont think its necessary. It also has not left any residue in my Brute WC container, so thats kind of mysterious that some are complaining about that..
When I first started using this salt I was extremely pleased with the results and consistency of tge product. Now halfway through my third box of this salt mix, not so impressed anymore. Noticed I was slowly increasing the amount of salt mixed to achieve desired readings. Also noticed it was leaving a brownish residue in my primary mixing bucket. It also almost caused a catastrophe as it "slimed" my filter media making it hard for the water to pass through. Initially I thought there must be something wrong with my RO/DI system and replaced the 3 pre filter, RO membrane, and DI resin. Even after changing the filters in the RO/DI unit and thoroughly washing out my primary mixing bucket, this salt mix would form a slimy residue on the filter floss and media totally clogging up my system. Not sure what the problem was, I even drained, cleaned, and refilled my ATO container with fresh new water. This slim issue was driving me crazy. So not only was I dealing with a slim issue, but the parameters of a newly mixed salt batch was totally low as well. So I stopped using this product and have gone back to RedSea Coral Pro and dropped this review from 5 stars down to 2 due to inconsistency in this product. Maybe I just got a bad batch, but not willing to pay this money in hopes for a good batch of salt mix.
i have no problems if my parameters need adjusted i do so love it
I don't know why it's getting these negative reviews I've been using the salt for over two years now I've tried tons of different salt as well as the Red Sea product I use a zeovite reactor and I have an SPS dominated tank as well as a mixed reef tank and fish I must say I don't understand what the issues are maybe they're not mixing it properly but mine makes his clear within two 2 hours like I said used to have problems with the Red Sea with alkalinity but now I have a nice steady eight
I bought the big box on the Black Friday sale based on the BRS recommendation since I was about out of my Red Sea Pro. I've used this now nearly 6 months, and my alkalinity has been a constant issue. Period! Stonies are stressed, I'm having to buffer heavily, which is real bad, and it's thrown my system off totally! Tested yesterday before water change, was 8.0, did a 5ga change on about 30ga volume, and took a sample to my lfs later in the day, it was 7.0! Avoid this stuff! The only positive I can give it is it mixes super easily and clear. I've never had debris, cloudiness or anything. But, all in all, I'm heading right back to RedSea Pro and washing my hands of this stuff, and I still have a small bucket left (RedSea little bucket full). Maybe it'll be a better weed killer around the yard.
This salt is best in market being synthetic it's totally medical grade product. How someone does not like this I'm clueless. I have no reside compared to other brands
Overall I guess I'm pleased with it, but it leaves a slimy residue on the glass, and it seems cloudy. Otherwise, it's reef salt...
I can't figure out why some people have great success and others have this cloudy residue problem.... I will not buy this again.
doing water changes actually drops my magnesium and messes up my other parameters. doesnt mix well. some debris
I have used just this salt in a new 125g build. I have had issues with levels, precipitate, residue and debris in the mix. I have used 4 boxes of this mix. I mix using heated, RODI water and mix to 1.025sg. Each time I get residue in my mixing container, on my pumps and heaters in the sump and display. I also get precipitate that is present in the water for 2 days after adding to the display. The levels are not good either. Dkh is 8~, Cal is 380 and Mag is 1280. More of a concern is the debris. In the first two boxes there were small pieces of white plastic. In the recent two boxes, there were small pieces of brown paper that ended clogging my mixing pump at one point. BRS has been great about the issues and refunded me for my recent purchase. However, HW has been silent even with two emails and anot attempted phone call. I will be switching to Red Sea Coral Pro.
Swithed to this salt a while ago. Im 4 boxes in and the parameters have been almost 100% the same and consistent between the boxes. You can tell when mixing the difference between synthetic salt and regular. This stuff disolves and clears up very quickly. I have 45 gallons mixed up all the time and have my DOS hooked up changing 3 gallons daily. The tank loves this stuff.
I decided to use this mix on a new tank after watching the BRS 160 build. No complaints here.
I have been using this salt, Reefer, for about 1 year now. I love how easy and quickly it mixes. The salt cloud clears quickly and the salt parameters are very consistent. I also find that my mix tank stays cleaner much longer than the other salts that i have used. My corals love it and appear very happy.
I was using standard Instant Ocean but had a number of issues with not enough of the correct minerals so I tried HW. First the good, HW has excellent parameters which is what I wanted. Now for the bad, I have to use 2-4 cups more salt per 20g to get 1.026sg. It leaves a heavy precipitant layer in my mixing barrel coats my pump and heater where Instant Ocean did not. I have to throw out 5%-10% as it doesn’t thoroughly mix Came in large rocks that had to be broken up instead of loose salt.
I've tried ever salt readily available. Some salts leave residues, some burn your hands even after full mixing, and some are inconsistent. This salt mixes fast and clean. I trust this salt in all my systems from reef to fish only. This is the only salt I will EVER use!
I was using instant ocean reef crystals, I had a bad bucket introducing phosphates into my tank so I figured I would give this a try. Did a 10g water change in a 75g and my zoanthids and gap were shriveled up for days. This salt also caused my protein skimmer to overflow. It has been 3 days and I still can't turn my protein skimmer back on. Never had any of these issues before.
This salt is the best I've used. Mixes quick and no junk or residue if you use it right away.
I'm very pleased with the salt and the parameters. Consistent
On my second box of HW reefer salt and may be the salt I will stick with for quite some time in the future. I was using Red Sea Coral Pro before the switch and have nothing bad to say about that brand...very good salt as well. The reason I did switch is because the red sea seamed to be less consistent at times but not dramatically that it would cause huge issues. The HW has been spot on every time, every water change. It mixes fast and clear with no residue like the red sea and my sps and lps corals respond great to it with excellent polyp extension and colour immediately after the water change. All in all, a great synthetic salt the mixes perfectly every time.
This is the best salt mix I have used. It a bit on the expensive side but it really worth it. I have the best growth on my coral with this salt compare to other branch. I have used red sea once but my coral never open up until I switch this branch.
I've been using this salt for about 6 months now....it mixes quick and doesn't leave residue....also I haven't seen anything floating like some people have said...seems to be a good salt...I use red Sea coral pro before which is also a good salt.
I like the way HW mixes and this salt has been proven over many years
On my fourth box , first was loose and great, second was a huge block of salt, third was a huge block of salt, went in sale so I'm trying again, fourth was perfect!! I keep using because I like the parameters and it mixes in an hour!! Wish me luck
I switched from instant ocean to this for my water changes and my tank almost crashed. The major elements were matched in my tank before switching to this salt but all my Acros got STN shortly after switching. Also killed a hammer coral.
Mixes clean with consistent parameters. None of the brown anti-caking sludge like with instant ocean.I like how the alkalonity is lower at 9 than some of the other mixes.
I bought a box of this salt to set up my new reef tank. I bought an new rodi new food grade bucket power head and heater just for mixing. No matter what I try it get floating particularly on water surface and white residue all over power head and heater. I guess I will try the red sea salt next
Aquarium parameters have changed since my last box of this product will not be getting this product again, started off good but it looks like they changed it. I've been using it for a year and a half. No more!
2nd time using this, first time it always made my water cloudy, this time not, I check before my water change, alk-8.5-9.0 that is awesome, only drawback is that the bag is like a giant block of salt, I have to scrap it to brake it up, not really that big of a deal, so far no negative results and been doing 20% water changes a week for a small nitrate increase that I have!!!!
This salt is so stable and easy to mix. No cackling or crud in your mixing containers .
this salt mixes fast is very stale and my tank has been thriving for 2 years with it. i have no issues with PH or any other parameters that I am aware.
After replacing the filter cartridges on my BRS 6 stage+ RO system and making fresh RO, this salt mixes clear and does not precipitate like previously. I do feel like it has alot of floating particles on the surface after mixing. Hence the 4 stars.
