The old version of this had an alarm when the temperature gets out of range. This new version does not have that feature any more. Why would they take the alarm out when that's the whole point of it being called "TEMP ALERT"??? Basically, its and expensive thermometer now
I’ve used the big temps for 20 years. I always felt the best feature was the audio alarm when temps ran above or below set levels. This audio alarm function no longer exists. To me $45.00 for a big digital display without an alarm is too expensive.
This is the third one of these thermometers I am buying. I have 3 reef tanks and only 2 of them have had the temp alert thermometer. One evening I walked in the house and heard the alert going off. It seems my 3 month old heater had gotten stuck in the on position and was starting to cook my tank. I probably would have figured it out after it was too late if my alert hadn't been going off because of high temperature. Crisis averted!! Thanks for saving my tank. Although a little overpriced I think it is money well spent in my case.
I recently purchased this item and within a month or two, the temp became very off. I understand that others have said 3 degrees here, or 2 degrees there; but my tank is supposedly 110 degrees. I can tell you my fish have become jerks and routinely demand I refill their wine glasses while they lay around all day in the hot tub. The worst part is, they won't even clean up after themselves!!!
When it comes to something as important as temperature, redundancy is always key. That's said this thermometer reads about 3°F higher than the old school Mercury style thermometers which I trust more than digital. Tested with the sensor probe in the same locations as all my analog thermometers and it's always 3° higher. If you can learn to deal with it, it's fine for just glancing. But be aware if this is your only means of gauging temperature.

Works really well. Despite being used for aquariums, they are susceptible to damage from humidity and drips of saltwater. Thus, I highly recommend that if you use it, put the display outside the stand/sump. My view is that for the price, it should be a little better protected against water damage. Mine lasted about 2 years. Judge for yourself whether that is a long time or not. The supplied battery outlived the unit.
It's a big thermometer, it tells me the temperature of my water, what else can I say?
I have been using this thermometer in several applications for years. It is an easy and affordable way to keep an eye on Temps. I keep a backup in reserve.
