I bought four of these power heads heads to use on my 170 gal aquarium with 3/4” glass. These are listed as being compatible with glass that thick, but in reality they are not. While they will magnetize and stay in place powered off, once energized beyond 30% the wet sides will eventually fall off between 8-24hrs. Called EcoTech for help and they acknowledged this was a known issue and basically told me I was on my own to figure it out. For a top of the line product I am very let down.
really good wave maker only complain is that you cannot aim it and is ridiculoously expensive there are other cheaper options coming out.
I have tried a lot of Jets, but these take the cake. Most options for Flow Rate, Super Easy to clean. Good quality.
Really love these powerheads. I have three of them. Two of them are old. At least seven years. Still running strong.
From a flow perspective its fantastic. Loud buzzing though. I do monthly cleanings and upkeep with no improvement. It didn't start right away but after a few months became annoyingly loud. Big disappointment.
Like other before me have said. Expensive, but worth the cost. i have had mine for a few years now and i haven't had any complaints ( the clicking can be fixed by aligning them properly )
As long as regular maintenance is done, there shouldn't be any issues except maybe from a manufacturing fault. I explicitly enjoy the new quiet drive version. For my 200 gallon I'm running 1 mp40 across the bottom in the back and 1 mp40 mid in the front to mimic an upcoming race track to the overflows. Returns are aimed in dead zones.
Very expensive for something that give me issues constantly... I've had to replace the wet side to get rid of a constant clicking sound. Even the new clean wet side give me clicking issues with very little build up on the propeller. I have to constantly clean and adjust these to avoid noises and after a year they need to be replaced because no amount of cleaning will remove the clicking sounds.. I really regret buying two of these...
Great pump. Wish there were better options to locate controllers at centralized locations with other tank hardware. Chords are not long enough.
After about 6 months with these, I have to change my review. These are nothing but problems. Out of 4 power heads- 2-mp40 and 2-mp10’s, I only have one that operates as expected. The MP10’s fall off after 30 days or so. The MP10 are a huge pain to switch out the wet sides. My glass is 5/16. The MP10’s rattle and fall off. Takes about a half hour with my arms two feet in the water trying to get these working. If your glass is 5/16 or thicker-go MP40. I also have one power brick for an MP10 that has failed. The MP40 are better. I can switch out the wetsides without a problem. Then the problems start. Rattling, whistling. I have 5 mp40 wetsides to swap out. One of the MP40 works flawlessly. The other rattles to an extent no matter my adjustments. Cords outside the tank are awesome! Problems with the wetsides make it not worth the money for me with these.
Best wave pump I’ve used by far. Will never use anything except these. Along with ecotech battery. 100% recommend
I have gone the cheap route and bought power heads from the online A store and I have bought from the pet stores for my tank size. I must say that having the option to change the variety of flow at different times of the day is great. I can't wait to play with it with my Apex when my MXM module gets here. I will purchase again when I upgrade my tank.
I will be honest I was very worried about the things I heard about the mp40mqd before buying one. Multiple fellow reefers have steered me away for various reasons. I had to see for myself and I can say for certain that this thing moves mass amounts of water with ease. I love being able to control it with the physical controller instead of an app. The only downside though is controllability. I would like to be able to sett min-max limits and have more control over the waves. If this fails like my Nero 3 did I will be sure to come back and revise this review.
The Negatives: Mine was about 18 months old when the dry side got EXTREMELY Loud! Had to buy a new dry side and can still hear it from my bedroom with the door shut, which is isolated from the main area of the house this tank is in. Cleaning the glass is a pain as well. As soon as you move one side the other side falls off. Make sure the wet side is always the one to fall off. 3M sticker backs with a cable manager will hold the cord so the dryside doesn't fall to the floor. If it hits the floor, device is ruined and no warranty. (Hard lesson) No WiFi control. Not a huge deal but if I'm away and see something off through my camera, I have to shut the pump off through apex controls. The Good: They move some water! Flow is nice. Mobius is really easy as well.
love these and the MP60s
I have had these since i started reefing in 2018. Whisper quiet, insanely powerful. Price point could be a little better but they last! So you get what you pay for
Best power heads I have ever had. I initially went cheap with my power heads. You’re just moving water, what could possibly be the difference? After a big diatom bloom, I went with the Hail Mary. Took the BRS suggested package of 2-MP40’s and two MP10’s in my 48” 120. What a difference! The power of the pumps, but not a jet stream is incredible and hard to explain. The control you get with these pumps and very clear flow patterns is amazing. The wires being out of the tank is just another great bonus. If you’re on the wire, pull the trigger on these.
Okay I am going to start off by saying when I had one mp 10 in my 90g aquarium I loved echotech. It was quiet put out good flow and did everything I needed even without the app. I have had 4 mp40s in my 6ft peninsula for 2 and a half years now and they are terrible. They are constantly sucking in sand and binding up making them run insanely loud. The magnet is not strong enough to hold onto the motor with 3/4 inch glass so they constantly fall off which can be very loud as well when that happens. The dry side sounds like a jet trying to take off and the app looses its timing after a while so now my night time programming for low flow happens mid day instead. The wet sides fall apart with the middle bushing breaking off and I even had a propeller blade brake during use.
I've tried two of these pumps two different times over the last two years for a total of four units. All four of them have started making excessive noise on the dry side after a few months of use. I went with these pumps because of their high reviews, however, my experience has been 0 our of 4. Gonna try Tunze next.
I've tried Tunze, AI, Sicce, Maxspect etc. The Vortech is the best performing, quietest, lowest maintenance pump available. Ecotech service is excellent, they even fixed a pump that was out of warranty for free. It's quieter then the new AI Nero 7 and moves more water. And the battery backup option has saved me more then once.
Love it would never go back to using any other one
I purchased this powerhead in 0ctober 2022 and the controller on the dry side failed after 2 months. VorTech replaced it after a few phone calls and troubleshooting. 6 weeks later the replacement failed. This is not worth the high price charged. Save yourself the hassle and buy something else.
I am happy with the pumps but the Mobius software on the other hand is horrible. It has a clock widget that can’t even keep time. It is constantly disconnecting when I attempt to do a device edit and the Vectra return pump I bought just so I could integrate all my devices into one software doesn’t even have a status widget. My old Radion XR30 lights wouldn’t even port over from Reeflink. So now I have Reeflink plus Mobius. Seems like Ecotech doesn’t consider their customers existing products when they have a new product release, planned obsolescence in action.
Several issues: > The system time fluctuates which means wave patterns that I want to happen at a certain time happen at a different time (EcoTech service could not help so far) > the minimum flow is 30% although you see 1% in the app > no WiFi control (No very important for me though)
I own 14 EcoTech devices on my current tank. I have no problems with the hardware but Mobius is horrible. To make a change to your schedule often requires power cycling devices, pressing reload numerous times to get a schedule to load, logging in and out, etc. Insane that this is acceptable and hasn't been fixed.
I do routine maintenance on all of my equipment, but the wet sides love to fail anyway. They only last about a year +/-. Unfortunately the bearings on one dry side became very noisy and then failed. Very expensive pump is now trash!
I finally broke down and bought an mp40, and I absolutely love it, super quiet, super powerful, super random, super sleek looking, not even thirty minutes after adding it to my mixed reef my Euphyllia opened up more and were a LOT happier, the only thing I regret is not getting this powerhead a long time ago
I cannot recommend the MP40. It is NOISY compared to previous versions. The mobius app is unusable! It can't even find the powerheads anymore. I am extremely disappointed with my purchase and will be switching to a different brand in the future. Vortechs are no longer the quiet and reliable choice. What a waste of money.
I've had a couple of this line on a couple of tanks at home and at work. They can deffiniatly move some water and the way they sync together is really nice, If you can get the mobius app to connect. I think instead if integrating the AI products over to mobius. They should have integrated the ecotech apps over to MY AI I've never had a problem once connection the AI products
I started my RedSea 525 with 2 MP40s running on Reef Crest. One on each end of tank. I tried putting them on back of my tank but they blew my sand bed away from front of tank. One of them made a little noise. I contacted EcoTech and they happily replaced it. These are the quietest Power heads ever. Corals love it. I bought 2 more. I placed them towards the back of each side running on Gyre slow at 50%. I turn my front 2 down from 75% to 50% and left them on reef crest. Best power head I've ever used and EcoTech has great service. Very quiet, very clean looking on tank, and very powerful pumps.
They need to redesign the wet side of this product. I already bought two wet sides one for each mp40 I owned. I think like two years of owning it and the recent one I bought is broken again. Not very reliable. My next pump will be a Nero. Gonna sell this two mp40 locally soon.
I have a redsea reefer 200xl mixed reef sps, lps and some softies. I wanted battery back up so I bought the MP40. Let’s say I did not like the price that’s why I didn’t have one in the first place but in the last hours wish I had gotten it in the first place. First impression is this was easy to set up and program in mobius and a very well made sturdy powerhead. I am still playing with the program but have it at 35% reef crest during the day and 30% lagoon at night. I’ll be back to update the review. If you are on the fence definitely well worth the higher price tag in my opinion.
Provide good flow. I’ve had 4 MP’s of different sizes. Noisy and the mobious app is spotty. Certainly not a five star based on price and quietness
When one of my Reef Breeder wave makers died this week after 3 years I made the decision to get upgrade to the MP40. After a couple of adult beverages and himming and hawing, I pulled the trigger and hit "buy". I just installed and I can not believe how much detritus its moving. I had a dirty sandbed, It's cleaning it!! I'm using one Reef Breeder and the MP40 on my 425XL. So happy!! F'n unbelievable. Buy one!
Other than the occasional connectivity issues with the Mobius app I love these. I have two on my Red Sea 525xl reefer.
Terrible First off I want to say that I know how to read a tape measure and select the proper spacer for my application. With that said I've had nothing but trouble out of these. I finally quit sending bad wet sides back to Ecotech after sending several back for the ceramic sleeve breaking free and spinning on the metal shaft. Which caused fine metal particles to enter the water in my reef tank. Customer service was lame at best telling me the failures were not in so many words because of my incompetence in selecting the proper spacer. The wet sides would come partially loose and violently start flopping around on the glass. The newest problem is what sounds like an internal bearing problem on the dry side. The units I purchased are now out of warranty and I will replace them with something different. I wish I wouldn't have spent so much on these but I was trying to buy American made. The mobius app was not my cup of tea either. Cheaper options are the way to go in this case.
The Cadillac of wave makers! These things are amazing! Love the controllability through the app. Tons of flow. Super quiet after a day of break in. My corals aren’t getting blown to bits by a laser beam of flow. Nice spread out of the unit.
I bought a new MP40QD to replace an MP40 that quit working. I guess I haven't kept up on the news because I didn't know that Ecotech would no longer work with Apex. Very sleazy business practice! If I had known I NEVER would have bought it. Unfortunately, I didn't find this out until I installed it in the tank and tried unsuccessfully to "attach" it to the WXM. Very sleazy business practice! It's no longer returnable so now I'm screwed! I guess I'll see what I can get on the resale market.
Really think twice before you invest an obscene amount of money into one of these. While it has lasted a couple of years, I have spent countless evenings fighting with the outside motor lying on the ground or inside impeller lying in the sandbed. The magnet isn't anywhere near strong enough and the design of the inside unit is such that it requires constant cleaning / soaking to prevent buildup and seizure. This is yet another example of a manufacturer with brilliant engineering cutting corners and manufacturing as cheaply as possible, yet taking premium gross margin at minimum advertised pricing. Vote with your wallet and demand that the manufacturers in this space stand behind the quality of their products.
I know my (2) MP40's are the older generation but I have to say: Been running both for 12 years with absolutely zero issues. I clean the wet side about every 3-4 months. They have been on Reef Crest approx 80% in master/slave mode and go into night mode every night.
Have had mine for a year now and have never had any issues with it. It’s quiet, puts out great flow for a 75 gallon mixed reef, love the mobius app and how easily controlled it is and the different flow patterns. I have mine running at a max of 65 percent power in my 75 gallon mixed reef. Highly recommend using the foam guards it comes with to avoid getting any fish or inverts sucked into it. Only thing I’m not a fan of is how big and bulky the magnet is. It’s like I have a giant earmuff on the side of my tank. But I do love the no cords inside the tank. Big plus
works great quiet and great water flow. the lamborgini of controllable wave makers .
These pumps are amazing! I tried the cheaper options & finally caved & got some of these. I’ll never look back!
Quiet, strong and easy to control.
Right out of the box this thing has a horrible high pitched whining noise. I’m going on day two now and the noise is still so loud and unbearable! I contacted the company and they said there is a break in period where you are supposed to run it at lowest speed and slowly ramp it up over two weeks (that is not mentioned in the instructions). Even at its lowest setting I can hear it clear across my house and into my bedroom! The company said to let them know if the noise doesn’t go away after seven days but I don’t think I can go another day with this horrible noise. I may just have to return it if the noise isn’t gone by the time I get home from work :0
This pump is amazing! The amount of flow it gives is top notch. I have two on either side of my Reefer 350 positioned about 6 inches from the surface and I have flow eeeeverywhere. I could not be happier. One word of advice though: definitely use the supplied mounting hardware to secure the pumps dry side, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve accidentally bumped my dry side and the mounting hardware saved me. Super super happy with these, do not hesitate to purchase. Yes they are pricy, but that’s because you are buying the BEST your money can buy.
I tried ones in my small 300L aquarium… I just used the 35% of power!!
Would not recommend ecotech mp40. Overpriced and mp40s can’t even hold tight on redsea XXL 625 . Keep falling off .
Have an older mp40 which is a bit noisy. These new quite drive MP40'S are super quite even when running at 100%. I purchased 2 for my 90 mixed reef tank and only run them at half speed and you can't even hear them.
honestly I would never want to buy anything else it does everything I could ever think of and so much more I have two of the mp 40 and they and I love how easy it is to program them with the app they were definitely worth the money
After having my MP 40s for a few years now, I can safely say that I have been very happy with this powerhead. Extremely quiet and powerful, easy to clean the wet side, and stay in place. I am happy with the drivers too, performing well even after falling a few times.
The MP series by Ecotech is phenomenal! This pump is quiet, has a variety of setting choices and lots of flow. The form factor in the tank is minimal. The Mobius app allows for quick and secure connection and simple adjustment.
I ran 2 of these on the end of my 120 peninsula and they were great. Amazing flow and so discrete in the tank. Their low profile and black wet side blended in with the black back wall. Mobius connects easily and convenient to update the flow patterns while standing right there.
Power, build quality, functionality. Just the best powerhead you can get
I own 2 MP40’s and they have been running continuously for years. They are infinitely adjustable and incredibly reliable. They have 12 different flow modes, low profile design and my favorite part is that there is no cord in the water. Heat generated by electric motor is virtually non-existent because the Vortech pumps used coupled magnetic drive which results in low power use and virtually no heat transfer. Use the available battery back up for those power outages too. Vortech pumps are the best choice for keeping my corals safe and happy.
I truly believe if these companies cared about marine life the pumps will be made so there’s no possibility of fish being sucked onto the pumps.. You shouldn’t have to buy a separate peace when you spend this kind of money to protect your fish it’s not just my MP 40 but also my gyre That have sucked fish up against the pump like I said I truly believe if they cared about these animals they would be made so this could not happen that you would not have to buy a separate piece to keep your fish safe at this price it should come with the pump
Owning the mp40 for two months now and it is an amazing pump no wires on the inside of the tank makes for easy removal and cleaning very powerful pump currently only running one but plan for a second one in few months time once I upgrade to the ecotech collection.
Easy to clean due to the removable wetside, keepscwires out of the tank, super quiet, and puts out a ton of flow! A own several of these and they are the only powerheads I use now. I've had them for several years without any issues.
I found out too late after purchasing that buying a MP40 with known supported features no longer means buying a MP40 with said supported features. Try looking for older inventory if you're wanting to hook up the MP40 to Apex via the WXM module. There is a supported downgrade in Mobius but it failed first attempt for me and they say do not power it down after it fails but no instructions that I could find on what to do if it does fail. So I guess you just leave it in a failed state and contact support like I did. It still works as a standalone power head using the hardware controls but that wasn't what I bought it for.
20 years in the hobby and have used many popular flow pumps over the years. These are the best. Mobius control makes tuning your flow simple. Watch the videos for using Mobius.
