The Smart Skimmer Security is an advanced monitoring device designed to prevent messy and foul-smelling protein skimmer overflows in saltwater aquariums. This plug-and-play system utilizes an easy-to-clean optical sensor that magnetically attaches to the side of your skimmer collection cup. When the sensor detects that the cup is full, it automatically cuts power to your skimmer pump and triggers both audible and visual alarms, safeguarding your home and aquarium from potential spills.
Installation is straightforward; simply mount the sensor inside your collection cup at the desired overflow level and plug your skimmer pump into the Smart Skimmer Security outlet. Key specifications include a robust power input/output of 100-240 VAC with a 10 Amp capacity, supporting up to 1100 W for 110 VAC or 2200 W for 220 VAC. The sensor accommodates collection cup walls up to 5/16 inch (8 mm) thick and features a generous 10-foot (300 cm) cable length for flexible placement. It also boasts a convenient automatic restart function after the collection cup has been emptied and reinstalled.
This product is ideal for any reef aquarist seeking enhanced peace of mind and protection against common skimmer malfunctions. Whether you're a busy hobbyist who might forget to empty the skimmer cup, or simply want an extra layer of security for your valuable aquarium setup, the Smart Skimmer Security offers reliable, automated prevention. Its simple operation and critical overflow protection make it an indispensable addition for maintaining a clean and stable reef environment without constant manual oversight.

I tried setting this up in my Nyos 160 skimmer and had a few issues. I skimmer pretty dry and this would trigger the sensor pretty quickly as it would sense all the foam in the collection cup. I got a plastic container from the dollar store an driled the top to take the skimmate and put the sensor in there. I works well with this setup and now I can collect even more before I have to clean it out. So it worked out. Tested it a few times and it works as it should.
I purchased one of these to try on my Red Sea skimmer. I was considering the DC upgrade kit because I was getting frustrated with the occasional overflow that seems to come out of nowhere and really messes up the sump ! But the DC upgrade is like 400 bucks!!! And that’s alot! So, for 60 bucks I put one of these on my skimmer cup and last night at 3 am I was awakened by the beeping sound it makes and the thing worked perfectly and shut down my skimmer before it could overflow. I drained the cup , it stopped beeping and the red light stopped flashing , the skimmer started back up,and I went back to sleep! ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT !! Sure beats spending the 400 for the upgrade!!
Depending on the style of skimmate and the size of your collection cup, the foam can possible trigger the sensor to shut off. However I have found that cleaning the sensor when cleaning out the collection cup has been helpful. The product does exactly what it is advertised to do. This is a great insurance item. My only wish is that it had a setting for continuous alarm beeping and a shorter duration of beeping. Reason being is I would like to go on vacation for a few weeks and would prefer it simply stop the skimmer when filled instead of beeping while my tank sitter thinks something terrible has happened.
I did not have good luck with this, as the skimmer cup filled it hit the sensor and shut off the skimmer well before the cup actually filled up. I could not find a spot in my skimmer cup to make this work. I think this would work much better in my ATO or for a warning for sump overflow
