I think the skimmer is a great skimmer can't wait for the upgrade kit to come out with new self leveling technology I believe this will make the skimmer quieter and will change self leveling a reefers dream come true. Over all 4 stars.
I purchased this skimmer to go with my new Red Sea Reefer XL 300 G2 build and the Reefmat 500. Let me start by saying when it works, it pulls out lots of skimmate and works fantastic. Why I would not purchase again? If you don't have the water height PERFECT, you'll have a tank stand and floor full of water/skimmate. Second, it's loud and for me to say that, it's loud. Third, I went to change my filter roll on my Reefmat 500 (which is awesome by the way) and came back to the tank to notice a lot of bubbles popping up on me while sitting in front of the stand. I turned the light on and the skimmer was overflowing dumping water and skimmate all over the inside stand, Mt Neptune Trident, etc. Why did it do that? No idea since absolutely nothing changed. No water flow was turned off, nothing. I constantly worry about this thing draining half my tank and putting it on the floor. Also, on the Red Sea Reefer XL 300 G2, you can hardly adjust the height because it hits the factory plumbing. As another reviewer said, getting the skimmate cup off is next to impossible. It has an O-ring that seals like you wouldn't believe. You gently pull in all sides trying to work it up, it doesn't move. You pull harder, nothing. Keep pulling and BOOM! Skimmate in your face, all over your equipment under the stand, your floor, etc. This thing is a nightmare. I've had it running maybe a month and a half. If I could return it to BRS, I would in a heartbeat. I've never write a review this negative.
I cleaned and cleaned and cleaned this skimmer with hopes it would work. I gave it 2 months, and still didn't break in. It is sitting in my garage taking up space now. Went with a Reef Octo 150 INT and it was broken-in in less than a week. I dont know if i did something wrong, but im not new to the game.
For this price point you cant be what you guy. The manual cup cleaner is a added benefit as well as the Drain line. Get it. You wont regret it.
This skimmer is so bad it takes the joy out of the hobby. Removing the cup for cleaning is unnecessarily difficult. Skim will be fine for weeks and suddenly goes bonkers flooding the cup and making a mess.
Have this on my rsr250 and does a awesome job. Easy to adjust and the drain hose makes it super easy to empty cup. Highly recommended
Picked a 300 up about 6 months ago and it is still doing an awesome job! I love how easy it is to adjust and the window through the cup into the neck so you can see how dirty it is and clean it with the built in squeegee. My favorite part though is the cup drainage hose and valve. That is icing on the cake and makes emptying skimmate a breeze! I would recommend it and buy it again if needed.
I have always been a reef octopus fan, when I saw that red sea had released this i was interested. My lfs actually had one on a display tank I could not believe all the crud it was pulling from the tank so onto brs site i cam and ordered it. Super quiet. When It comes time that i need a larger skimmer it is going to be the rsk-900. Recommend over and over again
Had a Vertex 130 for years. Was disappointed with difficult adjustment to the foam-column. I saw the BRS video on the assembly and operation of this unit. Super easy to put together, unbelievably quiet, which the Vertex was not. This skimmer produced foam right away and the adjustment was super easy and you know exactly what the orientation of the adjust ment is meant to be.
Just got the skimmer today and I’m very pleased with the skimmer! I have a trigger 26 sump and due to being able to adjust the footprint it fits perfectly. With that being said I did have to raise the skimmer about 2-2.5 inches so the Venturi would fit through the trigger symbol to give it 1” of unobstructed water. I put it on a fairly new system that’s been up and running for about a month and it started pulling skimmate out Instantly. Will update over time but was looking for the best bang for my buck space saving skimmer for my sump and I’m glad I went this route. Taking the unit apart to clean also seems like it will be a piece of cake!
