Going to a larger tank, I had to replace my undersized skimmer. Deciding to go with a set it and forget it skimmer was really appealing. Overall it does everything you would expect out of a great skimmer and a great skimmer this is. I have two minor issues with it...nothing of a deal breaker, but two issues none the less. 1. The neck cleaner is darn near impossible to turn. As such, I just removed it. 2. The collection cup is darn near impossible to remove in a tight location. I would easily recommend this skimmer to people and I would buy it again.
After purchasing a couple of Red Sea Wave 45's to replace Vortech 40's, I decided to try upgrading lights and skimmer. First came ReefLED 160s to replace very old Kessels, then the smart DC 600 skimmer. Here are my impressions. First of all, the engineering and quality of production in all these components exceeded my expectations. Even little details like the feet on the skimmer pump or handy "wiper" in the skimmer throat are noteworthy. Performance-wise, I am also impressed. The stadium lenses on the 160s allow two units to amply light a 130 gallon tank. My corals are responding to the upgrade. Adjustment of color temp is appropriate for a reef tank. No goofy unnatural color options here. You will not get colors in fish to pop the way they would with a lower color temp (redder), but the blue and UV spectrum will light up corals quite nicely. The skimmer took a very long time to break in, well over a week. During that time the skim pump adjusting function did not work at all. I was about to reconfigure the skimmer and pump control, when bam! Everything started working. Dark skimmate, pump intensity being automatically adjusted. Perhaps the break-in was related to my use of a fleece roll filter in an ultra-low nutrient system: much less work for the skimmer. General words of advice: get the largest skimmer you can fit in your sump, and be patient with the Red Sea system setup. You may have to reload the app or reconfigure your devices, and your wireless coverage may cause glitches from time to time. But the integrity of the Red Sea system will ultimately win the day.
