First saltwater tank and first skimmer. Took a bit of research to get it dialed in but once it’s ready, it really works well. I got into the habit of checking the sump every few days to check on the skimmer but I also take that time to inspect and make sure everything’s ok in the bottom of the tank so I’m not complaining about it not having a drain.
Using this Quantum 120 skimmer on a Reefer 250 tank with a light bio-load for the past 2 years. Skims well, wet or dry. It replaced a (fragile) Tunze 9410 skimmer that broke after a short drop during maintenance. Have had several other comparable skimmers in the past. This is the only one I have found to be set-and-forget. I would not call the skimmer a "beast" or "tank" since it is not overbuilt like some, but it is smartly built, more compact and sturdy than the Tunze 9410 and fairly easy to disassemble for cleaning. I agree with others that the skimmer is very quiet and offers precise adjustments. Does not have a skimmate drain, but installing one would be one of reefing's easy tasks. I have not experienced significant micro-bubbles escaping this skimmer, not even during initial break-in. The bubble diffuser inside the body can get clogged up with debris, but using a bottle brush to clean the interior through the neck dislodges the build-up. The silencer can accrue some dark-grey build-up (dust accumulation?) over time, so that needs to be cleaned once or twice a year. The airline can also get salt build-up inside the tube near the venturi inlet. Not uncommon in skimmers. Sucking in some fresh RODI water into the airline will dissolve the salt and put the skimmer back into action. There are some small areas of the lid and neck and outlet valve that are difficult to clean, but it is hardly noticeable and does not affect performance, so who cares. Lastly, the skimmer has a bayonet fitting for the collection cup, which is my preference. I think the price of the skimmer is in-line with the quality of construction and durability of components.
I purchased the 120, and they do not have a skimmer cup drain port. Maybe that is the new thing in Germany, but I still need it. Silencer was also cheaply made as it's connected to the tube and will pop off its base if moved more than once. It feels cheap, and what they ask in price is ridiculous.
I've had this going for a couple of years now. 200 liter Zeovit system with Clarisea roller filter. Cons: 1) The "fine adjustment" mechanism in the height adjustment pipe just makes it really, really, really hard to clean. 2) My acrylic has discolored; slightly yellowish/ brown. Nothing will make it clear again; not even 24hrs in citric acid solution. 3) I have to "fiddle" with the air adjustment to keep moist foam moving into the collection cup. It will do super stiff, barely go into the cup foam easily. Neutral: 1) No drain, but I knew that going in. 2) Not the easiest to break down for a deep cleaning. Positives: The Eden/ Nyos pump is: 1) Super reliable 2) Energy efficient 3) Really quiet. Summary: Quality and performance over hyped. Currently shopping for a replacement that may be a little more stable with my bio-load.
Quiet. Compact. Well designed. Watch the video by BRStv’s Thomas to help explain adjustments. Although the instructions do explain them, it’s much easier to understand visually. Like another comment about the 120, I do wish it had a drain port but I may add one myself. Overall I am very pleased with this skimmer so far as it has already started producing skimmate within the first 12 hours.
Awesome Skinner, it's break in time was less than 24 hours... Really easy to fine tune... It's pulling out way more skim than my old one ever did, also it is completely silent... I highly recommend
This skimmer is awesome. Very quiet. Started skimming with in a week of having it. Can make it a wet or dry skim. Bravo
If you like micro bubbles all through your display then this skimmer is for you. Mine worked for about a month or so and then decided to begin producing non stop micro bubbles.I have tried to dial it back in to no avail. Been through every setting. Tried different water depths. Nothing helps. I watched videos and read reviews but nothing. After 3 months I pulled it out. Worst skimmer I have ever owned. Searching for a new skimmer and Nyos is definately not on my list. Overpriced junk imho.
I have this skimmer on my Red sea nano and it works great! My only reason for the four stars is because it does not have a drain on the skimmer cup. So if you aren't diligent about emptying the cup be prepared for overflow. Break-in only took a few days
