Had a Reef Octopus essence 130 for about 4 years now. It's always been a bit underwhelming. I've had to raise and lower the entire unit to keep it from overflowing every water change and after a cleaning. Now that I have the quantum I don't have to be so finicky about it. Using the water high adjustment makes all the changes a simple turn of the knob. As for the the air valve, I've read using Teflon tape and getting it set to the desired intake will fix the adjustment from backing out and making microbubbles. Haven't tried it yet but I will. This unit is so tunable that I get perfect skim every time. I've never been able to skim so aggressively for so long without fussing around. It's also dead silent. The reef octopus would make a low frequency hum that reminded you it was on, this almost has no sound. Kinda like when you have a power outage. It's nuts. Overall it's a great unit! 10 outta 10
Works pretty good and easy to adjust if you read the instructions. Only problem I had was motor got loud after a couple months and the inner tube of the cup spider cracked for some reason. It was never dropped just took out to clean one day and it looked like shattered glass. Still works fine even with the cracks.
I bought this skimmer in October 2021. It started rattling and not skimming in February 2022. I reached out and it's been back and forth always finding a reason not to solve my problem. I've sent them two videos of the motor wobbling and they still say it's normal to do that. Beware of the quality of this unit and the terrible customer service from EcoTech.
I purchased this unit a year ago from another site. I constantly have to adjust the water level and the air supply. The air adjustment is a screw on top of the inlet. I have to adjust it several times a day because it constantly closes due to the vibration of the unit. It has progressively gotten worse. Years ago I had a smaller reef tank and had a Reef Octopus HOB. It worked great. I am now looking to replace this unit with a Reef Octopus. I am so tired of adjusting this unit!!
I've had this skimmer for 2 years now on my 240. It's VERY hard to get it dialed in. I'm constantly having to mess with it after dumping it. When it is dialed in, it works great and it's quiet, but it's frustrating always having to adjust it. I just bought a reef octopus skimmer that I'm hoping is better.
I'm giving 4 stars due to misleading current draw on pump. Its listed at 18 and actually pulls close to 50. Nyos says this varies due to water level but I call foul on that. Other than the above issue this skimmer has worked like a champ. I have it running on a crazy heavily stocked Red Sea Reefer 170. I feed heavily both pelleted foods, AquaForest coral foods, and automated dosing of Easy Reefs Easy Booster and EasySPS EVO Nitrate and phosphate consistently less than 2 and 0.03 respectively I attribute the ability to keep low nutrients to the skimmer working so well (and perhaps a tad overkill for a 170) The pump is nearly silent and the construction is top notch Eco Tech is the US distributor and parts are quite easy to obtain. The 160 and above have convenient drain hoses on the collection cups. All the skimmers can have ozone injected and have dedicated ozone injection ports. Great skimmer.
I love this skimmer. Works perfectly. Broke in and stable skimmate has been flowing out of it since. Had the original defect but I'd buy it again. Not sure why brs is blowing its wad over only DC skimmers. My reef octopus DC skimmer pump on my co2 reactor is every bit as loud. PS why would Nyos try to rely on a glue bond of a round dowel in a round hole? Just make a square hole and peg end of the dowel.
My Nyos 160 came with a defect. The centre post wasn't properly adhered so when you started to screw in the titanium screw with nearly no pressure on the silicon o-ring it came loose. We will see how the replacement works out. Kind of unfortunate I have to wait for the old to arrive back at BRS before shipping out the replacement.
I have this skimmer for about 4 years. At start it seemed okay. But then I had problems after problems: 1. The air intake micro adjustment screw was too lose and was screwing in by itself over time due to vibrations. This was reducing air intake close to zero in a few days. I had to add some kind of a spring to add some tension for it. 2. The skimmer pump is rated as 18W. In fact, it consumes about 58W. It is very inefficient comparing to DC pump skimmers. 3. Time to time the pump would not start by itself. I had to blow into the air intake tube to make it start. 4. Over the time the pump output degraded to the point that even with the fully closed out skimmer outlet, it could not keep level of water in the skimmer high enough still consuming 58W. Thoughtful cleaning with acids didn't help. In the end I retrofitted Jebao DCP 2500 pump in to this skimmer using 3d printed parts. Now it runs with 50% of power setting for the pump that consumes just 14W and produces perfect foam. At 100% power and 18-20 watts it makes skimmer overflow with completely open outlet and air intake. So the Nyos 160 skimmer has a good body design (except that air screw) and the bad pump.
This skimmer is a beast it pulls thick black skimmate out of my tank. Skimmer is dead silent which is a huge deal for me.
bought when first came out, maybe 2 years ago, love this skimmer, take good care of it, as it will not let you down....
I have had this skimmer for 5 months now, (I didn't buy it from BRS as they didn't carry NYOS at the time) and i have to say it's my favorite skimmer to date. I have had skimz, reef octopus and SWC prior. All skimmers do the same thing, they skim. Most skim well, but the looks and the reliable pump put this skimmer on top. The use of titanium screws is also great, as the the screws on a skimz monster pump have rusted on me. I have it running on a 120 gal, stocked with a high bio load of fish, minimum rock, and i feed 6-8 cubes a day.
Great skimmer. Easy setup, whisper quiet and build quality is flawless. I don’t even know it’s running it’s so quiet. Running on a well stocked 160 and it’s killing it. I would even say you could go all the way to a 250 well stocked and it would be fine. Easy to remove and clean skimmer cup. The slight curve makes it so easy to clean. Highly recommend this skimmer.
I love this skimmer works fabulous. Super quiet, great quality. Did have a issue with one piece they ended up sending me out a new skimmer to replace mine for the trouble. I'm going to get another one when I set up my next tank this year.
Awesome skimmer, you can run heavily stocked 175 reef with no issues. Absolutely quiet, easy to set up and keep running. Highly recommended.
