MarinePure Ceramic Bio-Media Spheres are a highly advanced biological filtration substrate designed to establish and maintain a stable environment in both saltwater and freshwater aquariums. This inert ceramic material provides a vast, porous home for beneficial bacteria that are essential for breaking down toxic ammonia and nitrites. By replacing traditional bioballs or supplementing live rock, MarinePure effectively supercharges your tank's biological capacity, leading to a healthier and more balanced ecosystem for your aquatic life.
Each single 1.5-inch sphere boasts an incredible 240 square feet of usable surface area, which is nearly 20 times more than conventional bioballs can offer in the same space. The media's unique open-flow architecture ensures excellent water circulation, maximizing bacteria exposure to contaminants while minimizing clogging. Overall, MarinePure provides approximately 150,000 square feet of accessible surface area per cubic foot, creating a dense bacterial colony that can also help reduce nitrates in some systems. Its versatile design allows it to be used in sumps, trickle filters, hang-on-back filters, or placed directly in the tank.
This product is ideal for any aquarist looking to maximize their biological filtration, especially those with limited space in all-in-one tanks, compact sumps, or overflow boxes. Whether you are setting up a new reef tank and need a powerful foundation for your biological filter, or you want to enhance an existing system's ability to handle a heavy bioload, MarinePure spheres offer a simple and exceptionally effective solution. They serve as a superior, high-density alternative to live rock for cultivating a robust nitrogen cycle.

Much more in the package than i expected. Looks to be a solid product, just make sure to rinse well before use. Hopefully these work as well as everyone says they do!!
i Got the gallon box. These are very porous and good for tons of surface space. I like the smaller shape so they can drop in and fit into any extra space. sometimes the larger blocks and bricks are too big or take up too much valuable real estate. they are nice. If you have a sump you can glue an eggcrate wall and just fill the space with these for extra bio media. done!
So this is my first time using this stuff. Bought the 2qt box over the 1 gallon because weight /coverage I am oblivious to this. So for simple minded alike. My box that I got had 35 spheres. Not to bad. Makes a nice pile in one corner of my sump refugium area. (Trigger systems 36) Will more then likely get more in the future...possibly 1 gallon box to see how many are in that. Also the box says to rinse the media with tap water then in saltwater. Just save the hassle and rinse in rodi water that way you dont need to worry about chlorine or other bad stuff in tap water. Rinse thoroughly this stuff is dusty. Besides that might try to give an update on thoughts via the next purchase. Till then seems legit.
I've got a 14g IM peninsula running as a frag tank with very little live rock. It was a nano reef for a little while and I added the spheres to the middle chamber in the back. Now there is hardly any LR in the tank and the Marine Pure is doing the grunt work of bio filtration. Soon there will be no LR in the tank. They have so much surface area, that they float for a second when dropped into RODI to rinse off. Try that with live rock.
This is the best media ever and doing some research 1 ball has as much surface area than 2gal of bio balls will never buy any other media again
I have a 120 Mixed Reef, that has been up and running for over 5 years! I added a 1 8''x8''x1'' plate and1 bag of these Spheres balls in my refugium and all is well. No spikes in any of my parameters and everything else is looking solid. Highly recommend~
I like it Im trying it out and I can tell a different already
Fits in tight spaces and smaller fuge.
I keep putting more and more of this stuff in my sump as time goes on. About a month later I see a decrease in nitrates as a result. Even with a big eel, I've almost completely eliminated carbon dosing while maintaining nitrates around 5. I believe in this stuff whole heartedly.
I bought the 1 gallon spheres for my sump. I have a 40 gallon breeder and 90 gallon tank. So I'm guessing around 100 gallons all together. I had about 50lbs of live rock in my sump. I wanted to change it out with the round spheres to get away from the bulky sharp Rock. That would snag my filter sock, hit the glass when working in the sump and for eye appeal. When I received the media I dumped them in a bucket with RODI water and begin to mix them and stir them up. After rinsing them well I removed them from the bucket water. I then removed the live rock from the sump and put the spheres in its place. After a few days I noticed some corals looked a little different and didn't think anything of it. The following day I seen a dead emerald crab and a hard coral completely bleached out. I figured something was wrong because my tank was perfect before this. I grabbed all my test kits and went to work. My ammonia was raised a little but my Nitrates went through the roof. I'm assuming this was because of the removal of live rock and adding the Marinepure. If I were to do it again I would probably take out 1/4 of live rock and add 1/4 of Marinepure. Just to gradually change it out instead of the instant shock of adding so much new media in. I hope this helps someone else so you don't have to learn from $400 in dead corals like me. At least it was only minor instead of my whole tank.... BTW the next day I did a normal water change and things are getting better already.
i have a box of these in a sump in a 30 gallon isolations system. push came to shove and i had to significantly overstock the tank. i use this system for acclimation so i admit it is up and running for about a year. no substrate and a few pieces of live rock ... maybe 5 pounds. i had to place a yellow tang, mimic tang, sailfin tang, moorish idol, 3 scissor tail darts, 3 blue gudgeon darts, neon dottyback, randal's gobies, two spot gobie, lawnmower blenny, and a shark nose gobies in the system all at once. believe it or not.. after 3 and 6 days, the ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels were perfect. i had those fish in that system for 3 weeks, did 2 water changes and all did well. i know it could only be due to the biomedia that i got this lucky. i am buying more today for my other systems!
I run a BioCube 14 reef tank and am using these in filter chamber #2; in other words, there is no sump unit separate from the aquarium. This is a bare bottom aquarium set-up (no gravel or other substrate in the tank) so larger-than-microscopic detritus of any kind is clearly visible on the tank bottom. The ceramic spheres do continuously slough-off small sand-like dust that settles on the bottom and is difficult to remove completely. The spheres are located in a trickle filter chamber so there is no tumbling action whatsoever to generate this dust. There is little doubt that these provide excellent biological filtration but the dust factor is just something for anyone running a bare bottom nano w/o separate sump to take into consideration when they purchase. (And, yes I did rinse them thoroughly in accordance with the product instructions prior to putting them into the system).
Looks great, holds a ridiculous amount of water which clearly indicates it has great surface area. Also it aesthetically pleasant to the eyes compared to other surface area media I've come across.
This is a really good product and so far I'm really pleased with it. This is a very very light weight product but it holds an incredible amount of water!
Best media of this type on the market period. Excellent flow thru the media
Ive been using marinepure for over two years now. The balls stay clean and are extremely porous! My water parameters always stay in check. Im setting up another aquarium and will be using my existing marinepure. I will be ordering more to replace the existing balls! I 100% recommend this product! Its far superior to the Matrix (pumice) that I used to use. Great product! Its all I will ever use for bio-media!
I bought these because BRS was out of the sheets, but i am not disappointed. They sit quite nicely in my sump and they are easy to move around. A little difficult to stack but that is because they are balls. BRS on youtube once again introduced this awesome product to me.
I think that I could use some more live rock but once u get ur tank up and running, the way u like it , it doesn't seem right to change things around, my nitrates were slowly creeping up so I decided to add these in place of rock, I put the whole box in my sump and it's still early to tell if they are helping or not, but no ammonia spikes or cloudy water!!
Okay, I got these about a year ago. Put 'em in the sump, but pH issues made me tear down the tank. I didn't know how to clean these, SO I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER, and they told me to soak them in Hydrogen Peroxide. I did so, and stored them in a sealed container. A few months later, I put a few(no more then ten)in the sump of a small SPS frag tank. SIX HOURS LATER, the water was cloudy and my corals were dead (only a few hundred dollars worth). I didn't think it was the balls. Soaked them again and stored them. Yesterday, I placed them in a new 40B frag tank. This morning the tank was cloudy, and the water felt....almost soapy. No ammonia, so I thought I would check the pH. THE pH WAS 11! As in, ELEVEN. Say it with me: ELEVEN! The pH calibration packets are 7 and 10. The tank was at...11! Everyone else seems to have a great experience with these. My pH was at 11! A BRS recommendation and a five star rating are no way good enough for me to ever risk using these again. MY pH was at 11! Today!
I read about these a while back, then spoke with them at MACNA. I think these are a great product. The balls work great for smaller tanks. I have an IM Fusuon 30L, and filled one chambe. Used the rest of them in my sump on my 315. Plan on getting more
Very light and very porous. I bought these to keep in sump and have bacteria ready to go for a quarantine tank if needed. Time will tell how they perform
I find the box a little small but the product packs a big punch in surface area! I will be reorderi these ASAP!
been using this for about 4 months now, excellent product spend the money on this and not on the plastic ones looks cleaner and the surface area is just insane for the amount of space that they take!
As far as i can tell, these guys live up to their claims and far better than those plastic bio-balls. I originally bought them to use in my AIO Nuvo 16 for added biological filtration but liked them so much I use them in all my aquariums. They fit great in my canister filters on my 55 gal & 90 gal freshwater aquarium, the sump on my 92 gal reef aquarium and in the back compartment of my AIO 16 gal Nano reef.
Works as described. Great way to increase bio - mass in the sump. Easy to work with and stays in place.
Bought a gallon two weeks ago to go in my frag tank as extra biological filtration. Love the way they support the egg crate when spread out. Be sure to rinse prior to use to get rid of dust and fine loose particles. Will let you know how they hold up.
Will never go back to bio balls
Replaced regular plastic bio balls in my sump tank and what a difference these things made! Zero detectable nitrates! Lots of little critters hanging out between them! With limited space for live rock, these are the next best thing!
I have been using this product for over 2 years. I found them superior to plastic bio balls as they don't clog or cause elevated nitrates. I highly recommend You need very little compared to plastic bio balls, surface area of this product is amazing
I've been using this product for my reef tank for over a year now and it's working great. It never needed to be take out and washed, it seems to stay clean without any maintenance. I was worried that the pores would be clogged eventually but it wasn't the case. It does produce some sand like particles that settles under the sump.
My sump has limited space. I am using these in lieu of sand. If they should get too gross, they are easily cleaned and ready to serve again. Lots of porous surface.
From looking at the pictures you would not know just how porous these are. They feel almost as light at Styrofoam which should give you a better idea.
Replaced standard BB, prevent N factory! Must have!
I have these in my sump/refugium I feel they do and excellent job all my water test reading are checking out great. In the past I used plastic bio balls sometimes struggled with high phosphates and nitrates. Not knocking the plastic ones I just really believe in this product. My experience I give it thumbs up.
Added two quart box of spheres to my sump and am confident it is working. Easy to put anywhere and don't need nearly as much rubble in sump saving valuable space. I recommend. Thanks BRS!
Marine Pure Biomedia 1.5" spheres are an awesome product. They work perfectly in the back of my Innovative Marine Nuvo Nano 8 tank. They work so well I will be buying a larger quantity for my new 240 gallon SPS dominant reef build. They will make a perfect addition to the sump. Price could be a little better and making them different shapes like live rock is an awesome idea. I have recommended them to friends and they love them also.
This is grate media and remains wet for days out of water.
shaping marine pure like live rock and bringing price down might be the only improvements to be made.
Washed them the night before and they were still wet the next day. Perfect for when the power trips during those rainy months in Florida. Very pervious product that works great in the sump. Using an Eshopps 300 Wet/dry and using 2 gallons of Marine Pure Ceramic Biomedia in the first compartment and 5 gallons of standard bio balls in the other. All spheres in the wet/dry are wet and are having impressive contact time with the trickling water compared to the plastic bio balls. Definitely going to save up order more when the timing is right!
There should not a thought process of wheather or not you will buy this product. If you watch the video, the product is what it is... just amazing. Bioballs... out of the question. It truly is unreal the amount of surface area the small ball with hold. Plus most of all the flow! Thank you for the video, it for sure helped with my decision.
I was having issues with ammonia levels on my 400 gallon koi temporary tank because the bio balls just werent enough for the fish load. I added one gallon of cermedia and within a week the filters capacity had went way up. My filter holds 27 gallons of bioballs, adding 1 gallon of these is probably worth 26 gallons of the plastic bioballs. I would highly recommend these, the capacity vs price they are still way cheaper then the plastic bioballs.
