The Kessil H80 Tuna Flora is a specialized horticultural LED grow light designed for saltwater aquarium refugiums and algae scrubbers. It leverages the same compact, fanless platform as the popular Kessil A80. Its primary function is to stimulate photosynthesis in marine plants and macroalgae, promoting rapid growth for maximum nutrient export from the main display tank. By focusing on specific light spectrums, it helps maintain a healthy and balanced reef ecosystem by effectively reducing unwanted nutrients like nitrates and phosphates.
The light features a unique LED array consisting only of blue and red diodes, omitting white LEDs to create a pinkish light specifically tuned for chlorophyll absorption. It offers four distinct spectrums—Blue, Grow, Bloom, and Red—blending wavelengths from UV to Infrared (360-780 nm) for optimal photosynthetic efficiency. The H80 consumes only 15 watts of power and boasts an innovative, shell-shaped design for silent, fanless heat dissipation. It provides coverage for up to a 24-inch area and can be controlled manually via onboard dials or automated and daisy-chained with the optional Kessil Spectral Controller.
The Kessil H80 Tuna Flora is ideal for reef aquarists who utilize a refugium or an algae turf scrubber as a primary method of natural nutrient filtration. Hobbyists looking to supercharge their chaetomorpha, caulerpa, or other macroalgae growth will find this light exceptionally effective. Its compact, silent, and controllable design makes it perfect for integrated sump systems, all-in-one tanks with rear chambers, or any setup where space and noise are considerations, providing a powerful, targeted lighting solution for a healthier reef tank.

Had this light for about a month now over the refugium. It covers quite a spectrum and intensity. I also purchased the gooseneck mount and it is a wonderful addition to the sump. Highly recommend.
Love this light. Works perfectly
I have had this light over my Crystal 30 for well over a year now. My macro algae has been growing very well. I had a refugium light manufactured by IM and replaced that light with the Kessil. I have definitely reaped the rewards of a far superior light. My only complaint would have to do with the mounting. I’m using the gooseneck mount and it’s just not designed for use on the sump I am using. I have made some changes here and there and everything has worked out well.this is a great little light for a small refugium.
Have this set up in my trigger emerald 34 sump. The spread is perfect for that refugium chamber. It pulls low amps when running and doesn’t get ridiculously hot. Easy controls and great coloration. Nice looks as well.
I have only been running thi for 2 months but so far so good. I would have preffered to have a mounting arm more like the a series one to get a cleaner adjustment over my refugium section with less light spill. I also tried to use the bloom setting rather than grow for the past week and a half. I will be pulling the resultant hair algae overgrowth out on wednesday.
best lights ever wow
Grows chaeto good. It’s been working over two years
I replaced my compact fluorescents in my refugium with this light and my chaetomorpha is growing much quicker and my average nitrates are slowly falling back to where they need to be. I am very happy with my purchase.
Purchased with goose neck about 6 months ago and am very pleased. The goose neck fits my DIY 40 gallon aquarium/sump the best. I must have purchased 8 refugium lights over the years and so far this is the best based on growth of macro algae. Will definitely purchase again.
Started growing cheato quickly. Love the colors and quality. It's small in size but the spread is really nice.
I converted the skimmer compartment of my sump (red sea reefer 250) to a fuge. I have two of these positioned over it and the cheto and calurpa both grow like mad. In my opinion, anything more powerful than this is overkill for a (typically shallow) refugium. I might consider adding a t5 to my setup, but otherwise I think these little lights are perfect.
Mine got stuck on high red intensity after a couple months, but Kessil has awesome support and will send out a replacement immediately. I mostly have caulerpa growing, chaeto is there, but slower growing. Tried ogo, but the high flow just ate it up and the skimmer spit it out. Been running 12 hours, may try 14. I can confirm it will also grow some hair algae fairly well, but it's controlled.
I've been impressed with this light after 3 months of using it. Chaeto grows great under it and as an added bonus I've gotten coraline algae in my sump. I couldn't be happier with this light.
So, I've had this light for a half a year and was doing great at growing algae, but one day my skimmer overflowed and killed the power supply. I contacted Kessil to purchase a replacement and they offered to send me a replacement for free! Great company, buy with certainty.
Puts out enough light for a shallower fuge no problem. Still observing growth, so no input there so far, but very simple assembly, interface and operation.
The H80 dropped my nitrates from 20 to 0 over a month growing chaeto. I have a 75 gallon display and 25 gallon fuge. I was dosing 1.5mL of vodka to keep the nitrates under control, but not anymore. I've actually had to start feeding significantly more as the corals started to starve with the very clean water. I would highly recommend for a fuge light. Not so much as a horticulture light though.
Great for a refugium and grows cheato fast.
Having the Kessil H80 over your refugium in my IMO is the best bang for the buck. My cheato has never grown so fast helping keep levels perfect.
This is by far my favorite fuge light. I have had a ton of lights including the H380 (it's big brother). This light has intensity controls which is important to me in a fuge light so I can choose to run shorter or longer light cycles. The only thing missing to me is that it doesn't have a hanging option like the other Kessils. I purchased the goose neck and am having solid growth using this light.
This thing grows Chaeto and Culerpas really good !,,,
Before getting this light I had just a cheap marineland led light over my refugium. And it worked, but I didn't notice great growth out of my algea. I've since bought this light and my refugium has bloomed! A definite must if you want a great refugium light!
I have a small refugium in the sump of my 100 circulating gallon system. I have some chaeto there but also several other algae species. I also try to cultivate pod reproduction there. I initially used a cheap but powerful terrestrial LED grow light I found on Amazon. It was plenty bright, but the nuisance algae outgrew the good stuff. Bought the Kessil not expecting much change, but was very pleasantly surprised when this light resulted in markedly increased macroalgae growth and virtual elimination of the nuisance algae. Also, you can connect this light to a couple of the variable output ports on an Apex, and program lighting intensity and spectrum changes throughout the day, if you're so inclined.
LOVE the glow from under my Red Sea reefer 425xl. Grows algae disturbingly fast. Gooseneck is well worth the $20.
A little background first: I have a 38 gallon Nano and I have a HOB CPR Aquafuge with the corresponding CPR lights that fit over the top of the fuge. I have tried for some time to grow Chaeto in the fuge. If you've viewed BRS's review their results are spot on; which is to say you will get minimum growth with the CPR lights. When I found out about the H80 I noticed that the size of it would fit on the Fuge. (It is a VERY tight fit so you would have to be careful. Otherwise you might want to hang it from the Fuge. I believe that Kessil claims that the H80 is ideal for the growing of Chaeto. I would have to say that is an understatement. The Chaeto is growing better than a weed. I've been cutting it back every 3 to 4 days. I believe that has also resulted in a reduction of the micro-algae in my display. I have the following settings: I keep the Kessil in the "Grow" mode, at FULL intensity, for 18 hours. However, you could probably get as good growth with less intensity and running it for 12 hours. I originally had it set for 12 hours but I upped it to 18 to see if it would improve the PH stability in the display. This didn't happen, perhaps because the Fuge is so much smaller than the display.
Grew some chaeto the size of a baseball to the size of a basketball in 2 weeks! Light works great for a refugium. Only complaint I have is the intensity knob isn't great. The knob doesn't allow for much variation in output from off to full power.
As always, Kessil produces a great light. I have this over my refugium and it has grown chaeto and sea lettuce successfully. If you have a small refugium I would definitely recommend this light. Great bang for the buck. In retrospect I should have gotten the one above this one but For the price point, this light is hard to beat.
It's growing chaeto like it says! I recommend the gooseneck mount for some sumps as it has a clean look!
I have two lights mounted 6" above my 21" x 16" refugium. They are running on on reverse cycle of my display tank, 13 hours per day. I am getting great growth with my Chaeto, highly recommend.
Does exactly what I need it to do, good growth on chaeto.
