Grows algae. Has trouble with enclosed cabinet humidity. I get two years of service then electrical issues. Blinking lights, stray voltage then it quits. This is my second one.
Definitely grows lots of chaeto.
Ordered 1 from a different supplier, then saw BRS had a sale so I ordered 1 from them as well. Wasn’t able to return the 1st one in time so had 2. Not much of a surprise, but if you mount it with Velcro tape to 3/4” acrylic it will not grow Chaeto. No biggie, didn’t really think it would do much. Mounted it on the rim with the included mount and it grew Chaeto, but it threw STRAY VOLTAGE THROUGH THE MOUNTING ARM!! All my corals closed up, I got shocked when I stuck my hand in, and I had to rush to order a multimeter so I could flip through every piece of equipment and find the source. I love innovative marine’s mighty jet pumps, but this product was a major disappointment. Now I have 2 chaetomax lights sitting in the closet and I don’t know what to do with them.
I am using this light to grow chaeto in my 32 gallon biocube. I used the velcro to attach it to the outside of the glass at the middle chamber. It works well and meets my needs. I have no complaints.
The light is pretty decent and definitely gives a cool look to the refugium. However, I have a 55 gal sump made from a standard 55 gal tank with an exotic marine baffle kit. The light mount does attach to the lip of the rim but not very securely. Every time I am in the sump for whatever maintenance, this light ends up in the water. Good news is it was made well enough to handle a dunk. Clearly designed for rimless attachment. Typical plastic thumb screws that are not as effective as they should be. Also, there is no dimmable feature - it is either on or off which is not ideal. I wish I would have spent the extra money to get the Kessil refugium light.
I purchased this light for an AquaMaxx HOB refugium. I wanted a smaller compact light that I could mount on the side of the refugium to reduce light spillage into the room at night, and this fit the bill. I love the compact low profile design (less that 1/2” height), perfect for use in areas where space is limited. It’s a bit smaller than expected but seems like a well made light. I just wish it was a little less expensive. I was expecting just a bit more in terms of size or power for the price point. I’d purchase this light again and recommended for smaller/HOB refugiums.
This light packs an amazing difference. I seriously don't have anymore algae growing in my display! I saw some reviews were poor because of Hair Algae growth. That is the results of needing to calibrate your lights timing duration. Your refugium algae will only absorb the amount of light it needs for maximum growth. Leave the light on too long and of course you are going to get unwanted Hair Algae. This light performed tremendously better than my refugium bulb!
It works not as well as you want but I dealt with for the year and 2 weeks that it lastet!
I try a few cheap lights to grow chaeto in my refugium without success. Then I give the Chaetomax a try and works wonders. From a gulf ball size to a full refugium in two weeks.
The light is quite powerful, however the mounting brackets are not wide enough to fit the glass on the Red Sea Reefer sumps.
I am disappointed with the Aqua Gadget Chaetomax. Save your money. You can get better growth with a fluorescent bulb from Home Depot. I'm giving this 2 stars only because it does stimulate growth, but it's barely noticeable. The growth is very slow. (I almost gave it one star for the same reasons.)
This is a great product was extremely happy with the amount of growth I have gotten from my cyto growing. Helped my seahorse tank out a lot. Will stand it’s ground with the kessel 80. Over all worth every penny!
It's a lot smaller than it looks in the pictures, wanted to hang on top of my 30g refugium part of my 120g tank, brackets it came with didn't work the way I wanted so I zip tied it hanging over the refugium, it took about a month before I started to notice any cheato growth and now it seems I get very good growth, I'm now able to sell cheato back to my fish store every two months, for the price I expected a bigger light but this seems to be getting the job done
I've been running one of these at night to help ph stability. I'm sorry to say on my AIO 15 gallon nano, which has a two gallon fuge, it's almost ineffectual. It's well made and makes a cool night light in the room, enough for the fish to see from room reflection. Since my fuge is next to a window it's hard to say if the fixture is helping with PO4 & NO3 but the chaeto is keeping both levels near zero. Going to try the Kessil H80.
I converted my ATO reservoir into a refugium in my RSM Reefer 250 and was using a kessil H80 and was replaced with two of these to not have light spills all over my sump and have more uniform coverage. Overall they do an awesome job. Excellent little beasts. Well done IM!!!
Ok here is my review of the Innovative Marine cheatomax refugium. Link to brs included. This is 4 weeks of growth. I grown green hair instead of cheato. I recently started running it for 20 on 4 off a day. I've seen higher ph then ever before and more stable too. I only run display light for 10 hours with 2 hr peak hold ramped on and off. Little thing works well. 53.6 grams in 4 weeks. Not bad at all.
Got this after a recommendation from one of the BRS staff. So far, it works like the proverbial charm on my IM Nuvo Fusion 10. After cycling, it took the nitrates down to near 0 in only two days. Have to clean the chaeto out of the refugium chamber at least every 10 days.
Really like the application here, I have now moved the chaeto to the filter area of my nano, before I used a phosban reactor 150 so water was pumped outside my nano. I am happier having the chaeto in the nano aquarium’s filter area as these can be Velcro mounted to the aquarium and got rid of the pump going to the phosban reactor. Two downsides, 1) that there is no way, a single one of these will out compete the main light for the aquarium tank to grow the chaeto faster than display tank algae, I’ve just added a second one of these, 2) the cord is hard wired from the plug to the light, the plug was too large to fit through the hole of the stand, I had to make modifations, they should have spliced the cord to connect through aquarium stands. Build quality otherwise seems great.
