Bought this for my refugium and have had no issues.
My cheato is growing like crazy under this light! It's connected to a timer set on a 12 hr. on/off schedule. At first I wasn't sure what to expect from this little light but my chaeto has never looked as healthy and grown as rapidly as it is now. It's small size fits easily in my already packed sump cabinet!
Had mine for almost a year and still works great, fits nicely in my refugium and growing chaeto like crazy.
This had been working well maintaining a basketball sized chaeto ball. When the chaeto ball shrunk and disappeared, I realized the light was dead. Power supply still works. Will have to pull the light and see if I could find the cause. Just looked at order history and the unit recently hit 3yrs old. I'm giving it 3 starts. I was happy with it when it was working.....it's great having the light source underwater resulting in minimal light escaping, and it was growing chaeto. But obviously I'm not happy that it died in 3yrs.
I had two of these on my ~10inx10'in refugium. Started with one, added a second because I suspected the amount of light was an issue. Algae was alive but not growing. My pH actually spiked during the day when the display lights were on (and display algae was blooming). I borrowed a PAR meter from the LFS to adjust the display lights and serendipitously measured the output about 4 inches under two of these on side by side. 80 PAR. pathetic. Just added an old Kessil tuna sun and holy moly madre of dios the tank is actually functioning like it has a working refugium. Bottom line: these are a waste of an electrical outlet. Looking forward to swapping the tuna sun out for the kessil specific fuse light asap.
I’ve been using this light for six months now and it grows chaeto like crazy.
Just after two years, over half of the LEDs suddenly failed. I tried to contact Tunze via website form but did not receive a reply. This light grew Chaeto very well, but I would have purchased a different light if I knew it would only last two years. IMO this light failed prematurely, eight hours per night for two years is less then 6000 hours.
I discovered mine not working yesterday after it being in use for a couple years. When I pulled it out I noticed green algae and rust on the inside of the light. If you're putting this thing underwater I'd think twice about trusting it. It worked well before it failed.
I went with a GRO originally since I have mostly apex stuff. This light is way better. Chaeto is growing amazing. The light being waterproof means I can keep it near the surface of the water and reduce spillover light. Also in the case of a power outage I don’t have to worry. If anyone from tunze is reading, the one thing I couldn’t understand why there wasn’t any locking feature. I use the light the long way, and while I don’t suspect the light will ever fall from its holder, it would have been nice to hear a “click” letting the light lock into the mount.
I have had this light for a few months now for my refugium and i have not noticed any growth at all of my Dragon's Breath macroalgae. It actually seems to be shrinking and turning a little greenish in color. Very expensive investment to not work. I am about to give up on the macroalgae idea. It is a nice quality light though.
The biggest feature I love is the ip68 rating, I honestly wish more of our reefing supplies were rated for this. With this feature it truly is waterproof and can easily be mounted out of the way if you have tight space or etc. Space wasn't my concern but ease of maintenance was. I don't have to undo or move anything to clean my refugium, or worry about any metal corroding and ending up in the pile of lights in my garage. It was hard to not go with the norm of buying kessil, but I'm so thankful I gave this a chance. Stable pH with added cheap harbor freight light timer, good chaeto growth, simple to set-up, not much left to need except to hope that it lasts.
put in sump of Red Sea R1000G2, the red macro algae loves it but others not so much, growth is good right next to light on red algae but further away not so good, I hooked up a Prime and waiting to see results on that.
Works as described
Works better than I ever expected. So glad I waited for it to get back in stock. Starting numbers Light on for 12 hours Phosphate 0.12 Nitrate 10.8 4 Weeks I place the light in the water for the first 4 weeks. It worked great. Did not overheat my water and I never noticed a difference in water temperature. Cheato growing great. But algae was growing on the light and the walls of my refugium. However, no algae growth anywhere in my sump except refugium. I cleaned algae off walls and light. I moved the light out of the water to stop the algae growth and I pointed it into refugium. 6 Weeks Light on for 10 hours Phosphate 0.0 Nitrate 3 Light is working so good that I'm now trying to raise my number's. I am only running light for 10 hours. I threw away a basketball size of Cheato. While algae is still growing on walls of refugium, I have zero algae in any other section of my sump. The Eco Chic is awesome and Exceeding expectations!!!
Great light & very versatile. I needed something that had mounting options and this was 100% perfect.
Purchased this light to start a refugium in the back of my AIO. It is brighter than expected for only 9W. Excellent quality as usual with Tunze. Happy it's waterproof and the power cord gives you.more than enough length for any location.
I was waiting for this light to get back in stock so I could set up my refugium. I added a golf ball size of chaeto about 2 weeks ago and it has already grown significantly (about double the size) in size and density. I placed the light in the water and this morning I noticed algae growing on the light. I have not noticed a difference in water temperature (tank is 110 gallon with 30 gallon sump). Overall, I would rate this light a 10 out of 10. Keep in mind I am only 2 week in but so far, this light has performed perfectly for my needs. I would suggest this light to anyone that has no room to mount a light. The magnetic attachment works perfect for me and my chaeto is growing great. I will have to keep an eye on the algae growth in the sump as I noticed it growing on the lights and walls in my sump. However, since I have it sitting in the water pointing to only one section of my sump, I am not getting any algae growth anywhere in my sump except the refugium section (which is what I wanted for my pods anyway).
Converted my small collection chamber in my pump into a refugium and needed a small footprint light. Installation options are great and versatile. Since it's waterproof I can hover it over my refugium, so headroom is not an issue. And it grows chaeto like crazy! Highly recommend.
Not for small tanks raises temp 2 degrees or more if in water or 4" above for this I give it a 2 star. Don't need more heat needs fixing.
I have a reefer 350 with a V3 sump. It has a very small refugium section and this light fits perfect. Mounting it close to the water (yeah waterproof) eliminates light spill into other chambers. Dont know how the cheat growth is because it's only been a few days.
It has kept my cheato thriving for several months now.
Bought this for a small fuge I had and thr chaeto keeps growing perfectly. Love the waterproof aspect of it. Getting another for my 2nd tank
good light love it
Bought 2 of these for my refugium. One on top. One submerged on the bottom. Works great!
This light replaced Tunze 8850 full-spectrum light as it finally wore out. My macro growth has improved and it is plug and play.
Fantastic growth and no longer flooding other sump chambers
I've installed this upside-down beneath the macro-algae mat in my refugium and growth has dramatically increases in just a few weeks. Feel like I've doubled the effective size of my refugium!
Excellent chaeto growth in 30 days , light works perfectly in a trigger 26 sump
