The MiniQ Nano Internal Protein Skimmer is engineered to provide powerful and efficient waste removal for saltwater aquariums where space is at a premium. Designed as a compact, drop-in solution, it effectively removes organic compounds from the water column, improving water clarity and overall health for sumpless or all-in-one (AIO) tank designs. This essential piece of equipment helps maintain pristine water quality by concentrating and removing dissolved organic waste before it can break down and pollute the aquarium environment.
Featuring a reliable needle-wheel pump, the MiniQ boasts quiet operation thanks to its redesigned silicone air silencer and built-in bubble diffuser diversion box. It operates on a low 2W power consumption and can be conveniently powered via a standard USB cable, with a universal USB power adapter included for versatility and even mobile power bank compatibility during outages. With dimensions of 3.2 inches long by 2 inches wide by 8.9 inches high, it accommodates tanks up to 20 gallons and mounts securely on glass up to 1/2 inch thick, while its collection cup and body easily disassemble for straightforward maintenance.
This protein skimmer is an ideal choice for reef enthusiasts with nano aquariums or all-in-one systems up to 20 gallons who require a high-performance, compact, and user-friendly filtration solution. Its minimal footprint and drop-in design make it perfect for sumpless setups where traditional skimmers won't fit, offering powerful skimming without sacrificing valuable space. Reef hobbyists will appreciate its quiet operation, easy installation, and the peace of mind provided by its USB power option, ensuring continuous water purification even during unexpected power interruptions.

Easy to adjust and set up. I bought this while it was on sale and waited a few weeks before installing it after the initial cycle. Then ran it for a week with no cup to just add air into the tank. This thing hangs in my center chamber on my hello reef tank. Depending on how much water I take put in or take out, because its such a small tank, the water level can be variable which is nice that their design allows you to adjust it up or down to keep your skimmer working nicely. I produce about a cup of skimmate about 2-3 days. Super quiet which was important for me as this is just my office/work space tank.
Easy to adjust and install in the Hello Reef. I was able to turn it 90 degree and install it on an internal wall to lower it into the rear sump at the proper water level. The rubber stopper on the side of the collection cup does fold upward when installed this way but the space saving ability doing this cannot be ignored. The internal water level is adjusted by a dial that is a bit touchy. A tiny tick one way and it's foaming all over and a tiny tick the other way and no foam at all. So dialing it in takes some time and patience. Once it is dialed in this little guy pulls out the stinky gunk with no complaints. USB powered is a bit bizarre but these days, not unheard of. My opinion is that it is stupid. But one also cannot ignore the low power draw, the efficiency and ease of use. This skimmer is not perfect, but it is an excellent choice for the Hello Reef. I don't have upgrade on my mind every time I touch it.
Bought it, dropped it in, and within 20 minutes it started pulling skimmate! Using on my WaterBox 20 cube!
Work until I put my tank down
This little thing has been going strong and working great for about 5 months now in a 9 gallon fluval flex. All I did was make a cut out in the lid over the middle filter compartment so it can stick out and it fits perfectly. It’s very easy to set up and dial in. Pretty much starts working in a day. Really no break in period.
It was so easy to setup and adjust .I just love it . great directions . fits perfectly in my nano reef tank. started working right away. thank you so much
I purchased this on 12/14/2024. It worked GREAT. Started removing stuff right away. After about 5 weeks it simply stopped producing bubbles so I ended up getting an IOAOI 50G to replace it. So spend a bit more money and get yourself an IOAOI 50G now going on a couple weeks with it and its still producing bubbles.
This skimmer has been on my Fusion 15 AIO for 2 years and no issues as of yet.
Great little skimmer. Low profile design allows me to place it in a HOB filter since I don't have a sump and still leaves plenty of room for other filter media. It is also extremely quiet. In just a few days it is pulling a lot of gunk and making some nice large bubbles.
I purchased this back in December 2022 after doing research for my Waterbox Mini Peninsula 25 and it fits perfectly in the middle chamber. It can pull out a lot of gunk, whether you want more dry or wet skimming using the black dial to level the skimmate higher or lower. When you receive this skimmer in the mail, its so small and cute but it works great. It is super quiet as I have the aquarium in my bedroom. The USB plug is super neat, it does not crowd other outlets. When I first installed the skimmer, it immediately was pulling brown gunk from my tank water with no micro bubbles or anything. Unfortunately mine stopped working this past month as of June 2024 but for $65, you cannot beat the price. When cleaning the needle wheel inside, I noticed the gray plastic of the propeller was slightly cracked probably from age. I will be purchasing another one, seeing every one else is happy with it through recent youtube reviews and on here. Only issue I have with the skimmer is if you have algae buildup on the inside of the unit, you cannot disassemble it and scrub it all out. You can only disassemble the bottom black block (motor/needle wheel) off and use the skinny pipe cleaner it comes with and try to clean from underneath, or when you take the collection cup off and clean the middle chamber. If the water height where the skimmer resides in rises, the skimmer can pull a lot of water in and overflow the collection cup. If I need to stick my arms into the tank for cleaning that causes the water level to rise in the back AIO chambers, I would just unplug the skimmer from the outlet or dial down the skimmate height. Easy installation and use. Pretty much the best nano skimmer on the market as of now. Check youtube videos on more reviews and try it out!
This thing has been running well for a couple months. Produces plenry of crap. Fits well in the second chamber of my Nuvo 20. My slim heater even fits in there with it.
I wasn’t expecting much based on the price, but this thing is doing well. I have it on my Fiji Cube peninsula 20. Been using it now for around a year. Still going strong.
This device is a powerhouse! I used it on my nano 6 and 15, works aggressively. People complain when they use on larger than 20 gallons or when they place the skimmer within the display. #1 - of course it will not work efficiently on a 25 gallon+ …read description. 2# - it is best if you do not house inside the display. Try to house it in the back of an AIO sump or a regular sump. I found that coralline will grow and seize the machine. Been there done that. Still working after 2 years.
Works okay. Can only wet skim and no air intake for co2 scrubber to attach to. I have no issues with micro bubbles however it's a mediocre skimmer imo. It does seem to be well built I'll give it that. It's also quiet, just doesn't seem to pull as much out as it should. With all the 5 star reviews I was expecting more which is why i bought it. Might go back to my hob reef octopus just got tired of seeing it hang off the side of my tank.
Look somewhere else, worked only after 5 months. It was for 25 lagoon with medium bioload.
I would like to preface this by saying I’m usually not a huge review guy, but this piece of equipment has exceeded my expectations for a nano skimmer. I purchased this roughly six months ago for my IM 14 Peninsula after deciding a needed a little bit of filtration help. It’s a tight fit in the IM but I was able to make it work, note that my light mount for the Maxspect Jump hindered the availability of space, with a less intrusive mount this would have fit no problem. I’ve read several reviews that mention excessive micro bubbles but after the first week or so they have gone away and never come back. My biggest challenge was figuring out the proper water level to run on my particular set up, once that’s dialed you’re golden with minimal adjustment. The performance is above average for a skimmer of this size and price. It will consistently pull stuff out of the water and for me, I’ve been able to tune it as dry or wet as I like. So not hesitate, this thing rocks.
I have this skimmer for my NUVO 20 gallon. Replaced my IM NUVO with this pump. A difference between night and day in terms of quiet. What a work horse!
Nothing on the market can compete with little work horse. In terms of form factor, skim, sound, and price. This will fit pretty much fit in all small AIOs in the 10G - 20G range. Might even fit in a 5G AIO if there is enough room. This is also a USB powered DC motor. There is absolutely no motor noise from this thing. Only sound it makes is from the bubbles. All of this from a $65 skimmer!!! Insane value for the money. Some people said there are micro bubbles, but I've bought 2 of these skimmers for my micro tanks and I've not seen any leaking bubbles into my display. If you place this in the sump area of your AIO, you'll probably not have any micro bubbles leak out into your display. This is hands down the best skimmer for 10G-20G tanks, I've tried all the other AIO skimmers and none can compete with this thing.
I don't normally gush about products. But, I have this on a 6 year old mixed reef, an Innovative Marine 14 peninsula. I have tried nearly every nano skimmer on the market. Icecap nano K1, eshoppes (2nd best and the only other id recommend) all variety of air drive skimmer from DIY to Hand blown glass Mame skimmers. This skimmer is substantially more robust than every other option. It is sturdy and doesn't feel as though you will break it or it's mount while removing and replacing the cup. The cup slips on and off with ease and doesn't leak all over. Even so, they thoughtfully included a drain and plug as well as a hose. The body and pump placement are such that it doesn't leave me finding a way to cram it in to a tiny back chamber then tune out the problems by running too wet or too dry. This thing is a game changer for nano's. Bubble magus hit a homer. After hundreds spent on mediocre and sometimes bad products. The lowest priced of them all is by far the best option. I'll be shelving my ice cap K1 nano in favor of this for my 25 gal. IM lagoon. Probably not been happier with a single equipment purchase in this hobby. I've made a lot of purchases of the last 20 years.
Got this for my Waterbox 15 AIO and it works great. Took a couple days to really break in but now creates consistent skimmate. Would recommend!!
This skimmer is on my 13gal tank and it works perfect. It only took it about 2 weeks to break in and it runs like a dream.
Great skimmer until the pump stopped working after 6 months. When I tried to make a return/exchange, BRS customer service sent me to Seaside aquatics who was a pain to deal with and fought me on exchanging the skimmer insisting that it couldn’t have failed.
Using it on a Innovative Marine 15 gallon cube and it's great. Pulls out a good amount and is quiet. Just enough room for this and my Maxspect Jump blue light clamp. I did run it a day with some vinegar when i got it and started pulling crap out the day I put it in the tank.
Ran it for a few weeks hoping the micro bubbles would stop, no luck! No matter how I adjust it or the flow through that chamber it still puts micro bubbles in my display.
This skimmer is fantastic so far. It broke in quickly and is doing great. I'll have to see how it does in the long run, but for this first month it is doing amazing.
I have this skimmer running in an IM 25g lagoon. It fits perfectly and runs absolutely silent. I also like that it's USB powered, meaning in the event of a power outage, it can be plugged into a power bank and provide aeration to the tank until the power comes back on. In fact, I plan to keep it around for just that purpose when I upgrade to my next tank. I set the skimmer so the water line height marker is about 3/4" above the water line and that helped get the skimmate even darker/dryer. The cup drain hole is awesome to have, and needed during break in. I simply pulled the plug and let the skimmer run for several days until it settled in and then made my final adjustments. I cannot say enough good things about this little skimmer for small tanks, especially the Innovative Marine AIO tanks where the chambers are too small for most skimmers. It's also the cheapest piece of equipment (that actually works) I've bought for my tanks in ages.
Works amazingly well for its size and looks/ feels more premium than its price would suggest. It significantly outperforms the Tunze 9001 and it doesn't fall apart or lose adjustment when removing the cup like that skimmer. The mounting system is effective unlike the 9001 also. I do wish the mount was longer so it would fit lower in my WB20 but it was easy to print an extension. It took a week to break in and I still see a few microbubbles but very minor.
Great value!
The truth is that curiosity made me pull the trigger... I can only say that I am very impressed... something so small, and since it has such good performance, super silent, hardly takes up space, that small pump powered by a small adapter exactly the same to that of a roku tv, or a 5v charger of a phone... in truth, just after 48 hours working it only gets better... we will see over time how long it lasts and that it is also maintained over time... for now hands up and very impressed... even more than the aquamaxx bullet-1 that was my favorite so far
I had the IceCap nano skimmer that would skim for a day or two then completely stop and only produce micro bubbles. The MiniQ started skimming after a day in after dialing it right. Produces nice big bubbles of waste definitely worth the money. It fit perfectly in the middle chamber of my Waterbox Cube 20.
I have this installed in a 20g AIO medium bio load, and it is working perfectly. Started skimming in a few hours and it hasn't stopped. I love that it has a drain hole in the collection cup, I have it draining to a container under the stand.
the perfect nano skimmer , little monster !
Great little skimmer for the money! Easy setup, easy to adjust, and empty! Also a very quiet little workhorse! Love mine!
I have a 20gal drop-off AIO tank from IM. I’m an old-school reefer, who thinks every tank, no matter how big or small, benefits greatly from a skimmer that works well. I’d been using a $100 K1 nano skimmer for a year, and hated it. It skimmed either super wet or nothing at all, was poorly designed/tuned, was poorly made, and I had to break part of it off to get it to fit at all when I got it. This skimmer is well-designed, and fits easily in my AIO. I have only had it up and running for an hour, and it already is producing wet skimmate. For the price, I am very impressed! I just hope that pump is durable and that it performs even better as it breaks in. (The adjustment knob for controlling the water level is unnecessary—I’d leave it wide open and use the adjustable hang-on bracket to set the water height.) In terms of complaints, I wish that there was a way to easily connect it to my CO2 scrubber. As-is, it looks like I would need to drill into it, and modify it to use my scrubber. I’ll probably just leave it as-is, and accept that my tank will slowly drop a bit in pH to less-than desirable levels. It also looks like it will be a pain to clean, due to the nooks and crannies from to the unusual design it has. It’s too soon to give a review of how well this will truly perform and last, obviously, but I will be sure to post a new/updated review in the future if necessary. For now, I think I’ve finally found a good skimmer for the smaller IM AIO tanks!
Great guilty dead quiet skimming in less then 24 hours finally a will built nano skimmer with room to spare in aio aquarium. Love it!!!
Works great dead quiet very impressed good quality.... skimming in less then 24 hours fits in my IM FUSION PRO 20 peninsula perfect with room to spare.... great nano skimmer..... finally
Great quality !! dead quiet !! skimming in 24 hours prefect fit with room to spare finally someone made a great nano skimmer very happy with skimmer and not overpriced.
Quite surprised with this little skimmer! Fit perfect in my Nuvo 20, started skimming right away with minor adjustment as far as how deep in the water. Replaces a Nuvo skimmer that I could not find a replacement pump, and this is nearly half the price.
I initially started off with the Fluval PS2 since it’s fits in the EVO. I could never get that skimmer to work correct. After looking through a lot of skimmers I found this one. This skimmer was so easy to adjust and started working immediately. I’m still in the break-in period so still making small adjustments to keep the water level where I want it but I am very very happy with this. Cheap, easy to use and works! If you do have an EVO, you’ll need to make the opening on the filter lid slightly larger for this to fit. It’s not hard, I just used a file.
I wanted to make this review because there isn’t a lot of information out there yet on this. The build quality is great right out of the box. It’s powered by an ac to dc usb adapter. It literally makes zero noise. Set it to the water level mark on the side of chamber and it took right off. Super easy to dial in the adjustments via the air control dial. The red piece in the cub can be removed so you can attach the included drain hose. Currently in the break in phase, so far I couldn’t be more impressed. Im running a cobalt c vue 18 gallon aio. And it fits great in the rear chamber.
