I have this on my 50ish gallon Red Sea AIO. It took about a week to break in, worked fine for a few days after, then the pump would not produce enough flow. I reached out to Bubble Magus customer service per their instructions and never heard anything back, so negative five stars for their customer service. However, BRS got back to me within an hour (heck yeah) and they were able to send me a replacement. The replacement, again, took about two weeks of break-in plus fine tuning but it has been working great since then. Reading around on some of the popular forums, the tuning and finicky pumps seem to be a fairly common issue. Really effective for the price point so I can't be too negative, but it was a bit of a hassle to get there.
wotk on my 40 gallon tank. No issue what so ever. to pull lots of dark skimate from my tank. this skimmer is a workhorse. Easy to adjust, easy to clean & simple to set up. thyank you bulk reef/
I'm using this skimmer on a red sea 170 for reference so it is slightly oversized, and I have a heavy bio load as well. the only take away from the skimmer is getting it set for the first time. I thought it was just the break in period at first but honestly this skimmer needs to sit about two inches higher in the water then is recommended. once I figured that out the skimmer has now run good for around a year. very easy to get tuned very easy to clean all around a good skimmer.
This skimmer works just okay. Its not bad and seems to pull lots of skimate from my tank. I run it at 7.5" depth and that seems to work. My compliant is that the venturi will clog with salt crystals very quickly. The solution that I used is to connect the end of air tubing from the venturi into a hole in the top cover. This way, the humid-moist air flows into the venturi and keeps the salt crystals from forming. I suspect many who have had overflows and clogs are seeing a clogged venturi. The design of the venturi makes it very hard to fully clean, so you have to soak it in vinegar. But again, just connect the air tube from the venturi to one of the holes in the cover (I drilled one out a small amount larger) and all your overflow problems will go away. Because this skimmer is mediocre, I just ordered the Aquamaxx DFC-80 Skimmer to see how well it works.
I have a this and the 7curve. I love these skimmers. When I see people having bubble issues I DID also. However I just turned the bubble diffuser and that’s the issue. One other tip for “tuning” the bubbles in the skimmer, I used a coralife WOODEN airstone from a skimmer i had 16 years ago! They choke it off a little to get the bigger bubbles for a better skim once it’s broken in.
I've had this skimmer 6+ years now. It's simple to adjust and is easy to break down completely for a full cleaning. I'm on my 2nd pump after calcium precipitation did in the original (my fault, over dosing). I first used it on a very understocked 75 (2 clowns and about 25lbs LR). After downsizing with a move, it's on bout 23 gallons total system volume; 13 display, about 8 in the sump, another 2 in a separate refugium. Sump depth in it's chamber is 8". I've recently started using a ball valve to tune air intake since it is rather oversized for my current rig. It operates consistently and, with proper tuning for it's load, pulls dark gunk.
Ive also have had the skimmer up and running for 16 months. No issue what so ever. Easiest skimmer to adjust and fine tune and is a work horse. Just like anything else you have to keep it maintained like cleaning it!!! I clean my skimmer body and motor and impellar out at least once a month if not longer, if it should start not perfoming like it should. I would not hesitate to buy another one if I had to!!!
I have had this skimmer for over a 1.5 years and it's treated me well. I did have an issue with it overflowing but eventually tracked it down to a plug in the airline that was caused by co2 media dust. Other than that, for the price, I'm 100% pleased with this workhorse! I have to equate the negative reviews to user error, being in the "break in period",or contaminants in the water column.
Bought this Skimmer about 8 months ago and it worked great at first. After about 6 months it does nothing but overflow and throw micro bubbles out. I've tried everything, raising and lowering the water level. Took it out and cleaned everything and nothing has worked. I've had it turned off for the last 2 months. Going to return it.
I have had this skimmer for over 6 months now. I have it in the recommended depth of water and every week this thing changes. Some days it won’t skim, other days it over flows. I am currently going on two weeks of constant overflow after spending 4 weeks of decent skim. I just cannot trust this skimmer. It has been a headache since the moment I purchased it and I would recommend looking elsewhere.
I’ve owned a lot of skimmers and this is the only one I really don’t like. There are better low budget options, but you will have to shop elsewhere. - Loud - Lots of microbubble spillage no matter how you tune or adjust the skimmer. - Recommended running depth is deeper than industry standard sump baffles will allow. That’s a MAJOR design oversight. - Made in China - Terrible customer service. They won’t honor warranty repairs. I have to give this skimmer a rating of
For it's size & price, this skimmer is a workhorse. Easy to adjust, easy to clean & simple to set up.
