The BRS Mesh Media Bag with Draw String is a versatile and essential tool for any saltwater or freshwater aquarium. Designed to securely hold various loose filter media such as activated carbon, GFO, or bio-pellets, these bags ensure optimal water flow through your chosen media while keeping it neatly contained. They can also effectively function as a temporary filter sock, capturing detritus and free-floating particles within your system.
Crafted from durable 200 micron mesh, these bags are easily cleanable and fully reusable, offering long-term value. The integrated drawstring closure ensures that all media, regardless of particle size, remains securely inside the bag. Their flexible design allows them to conform effortlessly to sump baffles, AIO aquarium chambers, or simply be placed in an open area for passive filtration. Available in multiple sizes, capacities range from 4.25 cups (1000mL) for the 4x8 inch bag, 9.5 cups (2250mL) for the 4x14 inch, and up to 32 cups (7570mL) for the larger 7x16 inch option, catering to diverse system requirements in both saltwater and freshwater setups.
This product is ideal for aquarists seeking flexible and efficient media containment, especially those with limited space who may not have room for dedicated media reactors. They are particularly beneficial for All-In-One (AIO) aquariums or sumps where their ability to conform to existing chambers allows for strategic placement, optimizing water flow through the media and maximizing contact time. Whether you're a beginner setting up your first tank or an experienced reefer fine-tuning your filtration, the BRS Mesh Media Bag offers a practical and adaptable solution for maintaining crystal-clear water.

I grabbed these to have a couple extra clean new bags for media like carbon, etc so I could switch out easily. These are nice
The bag cinches up tightly. Which is nice in case you are doing smaller particle things inside the bag! Just wish there was a smaller size for my nano tank!
I bought a few of these just to have on hand earlier this year. And then one day I decided to make homemade cannoli and these worked great draining the ricotta, and much easier to wash and reuse than cheese cloth. Going to be buying some larger ones to give to a few of the family.
I use the 4x8 for my carbon and GFO. I don't run a sump so I just drop them in my canister filter. Love their small size and they work wonderfully.
I use the 7x16 mesh media bag to keep fish, but more importantly hermit crabs, out of my sump.
The bag is everything you want but a good seal on the top. Put in ROX carbon and closed it up and put it in my sump. Bag tipped, carbon floated out. It was a mess to clean up and wasted media. Need a tight seal on it like you get with Fluval bags from their FX filter series where when its closed, its closed without a doubt every time.
Works great to hold carbon. One thing I'd like to see in the future though is a closing mechanism that lets it lay flat, like a zip-lock bag zipper or something.
This product definitely lives up to its description. It is everything that was described. I guess I was assuming something that was a lot more flexible and fabric like. This is a pretty stiff mesh.
I have used other socks that have fallen apart after washing 3 or 4 times. These ones hold up and have been washed dozens of times.
Was looking for a good media bag that would hold ROX 0.8 (was using stockings). Was advised by BRS to give this a shot. Picked up 4 bags and started using them maybe 2-3 months ago. So 2 complaints. First is the stitching where the drawstring is. The stitching is completely inadequate and the bag is already fraying at the ends. On 2 bags the fraying is so bad the string has come loose and I've had to use different string to tie the bag closed.........which brings me to the 2nd complaint; the drawstring. It does not want to stay tied. You have to put a few knots in it to keep it from coming loose and spilling media into your system. This is really below what I expect from BRS and to date is the only flat out "fail" I've had to deal with from them. Hopefully, they'll pull these and replace them with something better. Until then I'm back to using stockings.
I think the mesh is too tight or something. I put carbon in, and while rinsing water doesnt seem to flow through to well. Put bag in my rear chamber, and it floats from air trapped inside. Not even sure water is flowing through
As described. Very fast shipping.
Durable and washes clean for many uses. Works very well with carbon and allows fines to be flushed free when rinsing. Toss them in the laundry for a perfect clean. Cheap and effective.
So far this product is working great. Had it for a couple of weeks. Quick delivery.
Last longer than felt, easy to clean.
I put it over the end of the pipe that empties into my sump. It catches a lot of dirt, algae, etc. The best part is that it doesn't clog and is easy to clean. When it starts to get algae growing on it, I leave it outside in the sunlight for a day.
I especially like the way water flows through it. Perfect for carbon and GFO.
I have tried the mesh and felt socks from BRS both are excellent products , I prefer the mesh much easier to clean, fit my refugium better, last longer between changes. Felt needs changed about every 3 days, mesh will last 1 to 2 days longer with my tank.
Mesh bag does exactly what I need it to do. Right now it holds carbon, be sure to wash the carbon before you introduce the bag into your system. Soon the bag will hold media since I will run carbon through a reactor.
It seems like anything that BRS puts their name on is worth trusting. This is no different, great product
these guys are the best, super fast delivery
Much better quality than what I have bought from my local fish store.
Van not improve on perfection!
Good, but 100 micron will crush the 200 nominal mesh drawstring micron-rating, just saying.
This draw string mesh after sock works great ..it is well made and worry free , next to.e I'll order Half dozen. I use them in my nuvo 40 with the BRS rox 0.8 carbon and my water is crystal clear. Recomended
works great
I like the mesh filter socks as they rinse clean very easily.
It seems to be well made. I tied it around my return, but it filled with air and wanted to float to the surface, so I took it off and no longer use it.
Use for carbon , good job .
I used this for carbon. It lets water in easily and doesn't clog
As described. No problems with the stitching as previously described in other reviews. I would purchase again.
Works pretty good for filtering larger particals, draw string makes them easy to use
These work great for filtering out larger particles. Easy to use and do a great job. The only complaint I and many others have is the poor stitching. One of mine has already unraveled at the top, rendering the drawstring useless. It's nothing a little stitching won't fix, but it would be nice if I didn't have to repair them for long-term use. Other than that, they're great.
I like how it closes up tightly. Only thing I've found that works for Rox 0.8. Stitching needs improvement.
Good price, good offerings in terms of sizes.
They work great, easily cleaned by hand. I use them for my first stage filtration, tie it around the return hose and clean it when water level in hose goes up.
Bought 3 of these. The stitching does not seem very good. Hope they hold up in the washer. I like the tie aspect. Its collecting the bad stuff in my tank, so it's doing it's job...
I got this specifically for holding GFO in my sump. It is fine enough to hold the granules without any leaking out. Heavy enough to stand the high flow.
These are the perfect bags to use with my carbon in my refugium. I would recommend getting two, that way you can clean one, and use one! No down time is a beautiful thing!
So I may be a bit jaded since mine arrived with a small hole in it, This resulted in GFO and carbon getting into my tank and sump. I didn't also for a refund, not worth the effort, but I've gotten comparable quality mesh filter socks at my LFS for less that $2 (ok, to be fait, the draw string on these is very nice, but the rest is no different).
Filter sock would be excellent except the stitching comes apart after only one or two washings. Loose threads could float into pumps and cause problems.
I used this for gfo and carbon. It lets water in easily and doesn't clog
So far, the mesh has held up well in my sump, so it does what it says it does. Oh, and in case you like knotting your mesh bags about 600 times, you have PLENTY of drawstring to do just that!
OK lots of people use these, however you need a pair every two days to quickly change them out when filled with some serious funk. Or when an angry spouse asks how much longer are you cleaning that thing. I use felt and mesh combined with great results, and yes swap them out quickly. They are easily rinsed, and cleaned with a little chlorine (bleach) and water soaked several hours. Make sure they are thoroughly rinsed of chlorine before they go back in the tank. Great buy!
I use the 4" bag and stick a bag of Chemipure in it then the tubing from my overflow. Keeps my tank a lot cleaner. Love it. I have two and change it weekly rotating the bags. I want to buy more/
Filters very well and is extremely easy to clean. It would be better if the stitching was stronger though.
I know that I am in the minority but the mesh sock actually clogs up much quicker in my tank than the felt one. The stitching also comes unraveled fairly quickly. The BRS felt socks seem to be made much better and are my preference over this one.
i bought 4 and 2 fell apart almost instantly. the 3rd looks like it isnt going to last long either. and likely the 4th (small one ) will not last long either. the stiching that holds the drawstring in just came undone. i had planned on using these as media bags but now they are just trash. im afraid to use them on my tank for fear of clogging pumps or baffles.
Very good quality socks. I’m using only BRS mesh filter socks with draw string for more than 1 year.
bought these to hold my filter media in my canister filter, makes cleaning my canister filter quick and easy.
Bought this to replace the JBJ Nano cube's default Carbon back. Filled with ROX .8 carbon. Water looks great and is notably cleaner.
It is a mesh bag so there is not a lot to go wrong but it is constructed well and I like the drawstring. Some others I have used use a large releasable zip tie and it is cumbersom.
I purchased 3 of these mesh socks as well as 3 of their felt counterparts. The draw string makes them very easy to secure in my system. My 60g is lightly stocked at the moment so I only find myself removing these every 5 days or so...not due to clogging, but simply wanting to prevent them from becoming nitrate factories. They effectively capture a large percentage of the particulates in the water (and adventurous pods!) , but if they aren't changed frequently some items (algae, food, etc) will break down and make their way through the mesh material relatively quickly (the felt performs better in this capacity). Overall they've been very effective and completely did away with the salt creep I'd been getting from all the stray bubbles in my overflow/return. All that said, when I want my water to look truly polished I'll pop in the felt socks. Both materials have held up well for me through many (albeit gentle) hand and machine washings.
These are great bags like everything else that brs sales they my tank is so much cleaner since I started using these and the clean really nice also for reuse
Bought this to avoid spending lots of money on carbon packs for my Fluval. I love that I can now just put carbon into the sock, tie it off, and put it into my canister filter. Saves me a fair amount of money doing it this way and the sock is also good at catching debris that might normally get back into my reef.
I have used the cloth filter socks and while they do collect more they need to be changed almost on a daily basis, switched to these for ease of cleaning but still need to use a filter block along with them
Nice quality. Just what I was looking for at an affordable price.
Great product, I like to draw string to tie around my drain line. Cant go wrong with BRS.
The stitching on mine fell apart after a few rounds of carbon. Unravelled. =-\ The stretchy mesh ones seem more durable.
Compared with "felt" filter sock, this "mesh" filter sock seems like it doesn't catches nothing beside large pieces. I end up not using filter sock so I don't have to wash them. If you decide to use filter sock, try "felt" one.
Just got this sock last week and so far it is working great. It holds media very well.
When doing your routine maintenance, simply turn the sock inside out & rinse. An additonal minor mechanical filtration tool and peace of mind, that nothing is going through the pump. Critical for a fuge or sump, inexpensive and ideal. Thanks BRS!
well put together, great for holding the carbon that i bought from here to boot.
Using the pellet version of GFO with these and they are perfect for it.
Use these for GFO. These don't clog up as fast as others.
Easier to clean than the felt. It also does not clog as quickly.
I used these mesh socks to rinse media before use in a reactor. They have large enough holes to rinse any "fines" away from your carbon or GFO. Can also use to run carbon in a large tank for short periods of time.
The draw string makes it easy to adapt to anything really...Just make sure you clean this regularly. It catches alot of stuff but clogs fast which can cause overflows.
great product, fast shipping, love BRS will continue to do business
