The BRS Bulk GFO Granular Ferric Oxide is a premium filter media designed to remove phosphate from saltwater and freshwater aquariums. It works effectively in media reactors due to its dense composition, ensuring reliable performance even in large tanks or when space is limited. This high-capacity version of GFO reduces dust significantly compared to other brands, making it ideal for long-term use and bulk purchases.

I use this product on almost all my clients tanks along with my own tank. I would highly recommend this to anyone in the hobby. The GFO will be at your door in days after ordering and is always packed to perfection.
I need GFO immediately so I ordered from bulk reef supply and delivery took a few days. So, I order some from Amazon that can deliver same day. The one from Bulk Reef Supply was so much better and lasted 3x as long. Thanks
big fan of brs gfo, and do believe you can control phosphates proportionally just as well if not better than phosphate e or lanthanum chloride and actually prefer it, since it does not strip the phosphate out as fast, and have noticed it does not leach phosphates out of my live rock much like l.c. does. Also you dont have to run it 24/7 if you choose by putting it in a reactor much like carbon. moderation is key
Works as described
At first I ran RO through the reactor and media to get any residue out until it was clean then hooked it up in the tank. Brought my phosphates all the way down does a great job
I was using the standard version before but my phosphates were creeping up starting at 30 days and by 45 days I had to replace. Using the HC version I go 60 days before changing. The price is a little rich, it's gone up from last I ordered and it's now 6.5 lbs instead of 7 but I wouldn't switch back. Half the maintenance worry is worth it. For those of you using for the first time DO NOT start out at full dosage or you will burn your corals. If you left a bad review because you didn't know better than it's really your fault not the products fault. You should know what you're using. I will continue to buy this for a very long time. I cant imagine reefing without this.
This stuff works! With so many products out there that say they do this that and the other it is great to finally find something that actually does what it says!!! My phosphates stay at .03
Does what it's advertised to do....keep phosphates down.
More expensive but seems to work about twice as long with less residue.
Been using this product for about a year in a BRS dual reactor (w/carbon). Excellent at reducing PO4 in my reef tank. Better than the competition.
Rinses clean, does the job as stated. Price is HIGH CAPACITY as well
I switched to the high capacity a couple of months ago and it works way better then the standard. After switching I don't even know why they carry the standard GFO. The price works out to be about the same since you are using about 1/2 the media. Aside from far less dust, the biggest benefit that I see is running my flow rate higher. So more water passes through the reactor and it no longer clogs up. Before I was adjusting the reactor a couple of days. Wish I would have started with this product years ago.
PERFECT
USE WITH CAUTION! This product works and works very well. Unfortunately it worked a little to well for me and stripped enough nutrients out of my tank that my sps corals started to bleach. By the time I figured out what was going on it was to late for the majority of them. I used the recommended amount for my tank based on the BRSF calculator. After a lot of research I found many other stories like mine. If you use this product in reef tank you should introduce it slowly. Gave this product 4 stars mostly because there is no warning on the potential problem it can pose to a reef tank. The product itself is 5 star and works very well.
I had a phosphate reading of 5. Two days after starting the reactor it read .2 and the day after that barely 0. It may be zero now but it's been a few days since I've checked. Happy with the results. It was faster than I thought it would be.
This works pretty well and rinses clean very easily. Definitely ordering again.
I use this GFO on a BRS reactor with Carbon and it reduced my Phosphates to 0. When I get any reading (0.01 or more on my Hanna), I change the media an it immediately goes back to 0. Excellent product.
I have tried different brands of GFOs and BRS High Capacity GFO is the best of all. Worth every penny, don't waste your money on fancy name brands.
I upgraded to this High Capacity GFO from the normal BRS GFO about 6 months ago. I get roughly twice the life out of this stuff which is important because I am lazy at switching my media and I travel for work a lot. So any time I can save working on the tank to enjoy it more is worth it in my book.
Very high capacity last longer than regular brand with almost no residues.
Very little dust, lasts much longer than other GFO and at a solid return for your money.
Quick to rinse, works great.
Very good product.
Very good product
This is one of many products that the saying "you get what you pay for " fits well
works great nice clean water
I prefer the high capacity GFO because it rinses clean almost immediately. Less messy than regular GFO and really removes phosphate.
This stuff is great!! Keeps the algae in check. My tank never looked so good.
BRS GFO high capacity works great on my tank. Nuisance algae is gone since I'm using this brand with BRS dual reactor. Just follow the recommended dosage and you're good to go.
Bought this product to help 'rehab' a neglected tank. Phosphates were through the roof, too high to register with our Hanna checker (over 2.50ppm). Added HC GFO to a BRS dual reactor and saw IMMEDIATE results. Within 72 hours phosphate levels were well below 0.5ppm and still falling. Needs no real rinsing, just let the first little bit of water that leaves the reactor flow through some floss and a filter sock, to collect the fines (or discard the water). Tumbles beautifully in a reactor, we've had no issues whatsoever with clumping or pieces breaking down into fines. Lastly, when compared to regular GFO, this stuff is denser; at first glance it looks WAY more expensive, but compared by weight it's not a huge difference and it's worth it. We use regular GFO for maintaining non-problem tanks, but if you have a high-load tank, you're dealing with a major phosphate issue, repairing long-term neglect, it's worth laying out the cash for this stuff -- it's not a gimmick, it definitely works more intensely than the standard GFO.
No clumping, huge capacity, easy to work with, and keeps my phosphates in check like nothing else I've ever used. I really can't say enough about this product other than it is the best I've ever found. Period.
nitrates were high 10ppm then two weeks later 0ppm wow You need to get this now.
Very satisfied as it works as others have mentioned. My Phosphates were always a struggle with a nano tank and no skimmer - this is the first media to actually make a noticeable difference, Gradually coming down each week and happy with the results thus far!
I started with BRS HC GFO, and if the day comes, I will end with it as well. Rinses clean almost immediately, and does an outstanding job of removing PO4. Levels stay near-undetectable, even with my heavy feeding habit. IMO, it's worth the extra cost to not change it as often. 15% water changes every two months of so, and my fish and corals are thriving! Highly recommended product!!!
Good quality gfo! Does exactly what it's supposed to do. Keeps my phosphates in check. I did have 1 issue at first, but it was my fault. I was having an issue with it clumping together in less than a week, even though it got plenty of flow. After tons of research, I found out that having a low magnesium level will cause this to happen. Another tell tale sign of low magnesium is your pumps quickly getting covered in a calcium deposit. If you run a gfo reactor, make sure your magnesium level is in check. Will solve the problem!
Virtually no dust so rinsing is quite fast. Fluidizes very well and doesn't seem to break down like RowaPhos... Also seems to pull a bit more phos compared to RowaPhos but not sure if this is fact or perception. Overall, I like it!
I use this for phosphate removal on both my 150 reef and my 65 gallon predator tank. I usually change it out every 6 weeks and use a reactor for it. I check my phosphate's weekly using a Hanna checker and rarely do I get anything above a .02.
Seems to remove a little less PO4 than ROWAphos, but is much easier to use. Not much dust when rinsing before use. Works well in BRS deluxe reactor, slightly fluidized, without the sponges installed. Just started regenerating it, which seems to work well.
Using the high cap GFO. Can't compare it to standard, but it is very effective in PO4 removal. Definitely use a small amount when starting out. I used 1/2 of the recommended starting amount and built up slowly from there. Didn't have any issues
i have lots of fish lots of corals in a 150g can go 2 months with out what changes
Been running the HIgh Capacity GFO for two years in two different tanks. On my 90gal. I have the BRS dual reactor with GFO and Carbon. Since running the HIgh Capacity GFO, my phosphate levels are non existant.
Works. Noticeably higher capacity than regular GFO. Not sure how much, however.
Using with a mix of Rox carbon in my Deluxe BRS reactor and ran clear almost instantly!
Its the perfect size to get your new GFO reactor off to a great start
You get what you pay for. This GFO works well in a bag in the sump. It doesn't clump if kept in a high flow area. I just massage it around every few days for "general principle". It does a great job at keeping the phosphates low, about 1/10 of what they were before.
I was continuing to have issues getting my Phosphates down to a negligible amount. I was dosing all sorts of products in an attempt to get the counts down. I installed a BRS Reactor with High Capacity GFO and crossed my fingers. I installed it three days ago and today my reading was 0.05! I can't say enough positive things about this product. Thank you BRS!
Was having phosphate issues on my 90g mixed reef tank so I thought I'd give it a try after reading the other reviews....they were right! I am running a BRS single reactor and mix about 1 part High Capacity GFO & 2 parts BRS Premium ROX Carbon. After a week I was convinced my Hanna Checker was broken because it kept coming up 0 phosphates...there was nothing wrong with my Hanna. Been using this about 6 months now and have had no phosphate issues or no ill side effects. I didn't think I really needed the carbon but carbon is cheap and has it's benefits, and with the mix you don't have the hassle of tweaking the flow to try to maintain the right amount of tumble.
after 2months battle with algae, system running with algae scrubber, refugium, large protein skimmer, with all that running I decided to install and use this product, never thought it would work but after 5 days came back from vacation things really improved and all my sps corals starting to look happy and fish get to eat a little more food. Thank you BRS!
This is the only GFO that I use, it keeps my phosphates levels low to nothing. I use it with BRS media reactor with out issues. Great product would recommend it to any one needing g to remove phosphate in their systems
I highly recommend this product. It keeps my phosphate levels ultra low.
I'm running a 360 gallon reef/fish tank, have a couple of large 7-8" plus tangs, and an 8" queen angel, plus some smaller fish been having elevated phosphate levels, tried other reactors with no real effect, bought this BRS Jumbo reactor, filled it with the recommended 6 cups of GFO hi capacity and VIOLLA within a WEEK, my phosphate levels dropped from a .90 average, down to a .20 average.... a nice decline about .10 each day. This media REALLY does the trick HIGHLY recommended by bruce in Chicago
I used to suffer from high phosphates and had unsightly hair algae growing. I tried water changes and scrubbing rocks. I finally tried GFO which worked well, but was messy to work with. I decided to try the high capacity and I will never use anything else again. This stuff is awesome and is very clean to work with. Hats off to BRS for this product.
Does its job, works good both in my wallet and in my tank
Very low dust unlike other types of GFO & you use less of it to achieve the same results which reduces stress on your pump. My PO4 levels are around 0.03 ppm using the HANNA CHECKER.
This is the best GFO I have used before. It lowers my Phosphates better than any other product on the market. The corals have noticeably become more colorful as well. Good product!
I goofed and ordered Regular GFO instead of the Hi-Cap that I normally order. YES.... there is a difference.... My Phosphate levels have reacted accordingly. I have double the PO4 than I normally have when using the Hi-Cap. FYI!
I would buy it again because this media works very well for me. Try it yourself and see what I mean. Thank you BRS.
Let's just say I had a serious phosphate problem and tried several other medias. I put the recommended amount of GFO in a nylon sock and pumped water through it with a powerhead. It's a 750gal reef tank and the phospates had soared up to 2.0, after putting the GFO I tested the water roughly 3 days later and they were barely detectable. Can't say enough about this stuff and I will never use anything else!
2nd time ordering & works great with fantastic results..ie perfect water parameters.
Works great. It's a little pricey but it does what I need
nice and clean. I use in my reactor. With other brands took like 15 gallons until clean and clear water was following. With this high capacity only takes like 5 gallons to run clean. Love it and would recommend for all phosphate issues. Of course you cant beat the BRS service and price.
I run this GFO in my 90 gallon mixed reef tank. Have it running in a 2 Little Fishes reactor and it works great. Replace every 4-6 months and my phosphates stay at zero. Highly recommend.
been using this product since i started my tank. never had an issue with phosphates. lasts a long time and only have to use a little bit.
Running this with the ROX carbon through the BRS dual canister (one in each chamber) and I am shocked by the phosphate removal in less than 3 days. Before running, our phosphate was 1.3 ppm in the Hannah meter. I am running less than recommended by the BRS calculator only because I didn't want to completely shock the system. However, after less than 3 days it's down to 0.03 ppm. Wow! I'm going to continue testing in another few days to see if it drops further. If not, I will bump up to the recommended level. Thanks, BRS for another couple of great products! Worth the price!
I'm running the GFO high capacity with an IM Minimax reactor on my nuvo 24 tank. I was getting some nasty hair algae after trying to fatten up some new fish. PO4 was around 0.08 and that was with Chemipure Elite in the media basket. After a few days by phosphates went down to 0.03 and last night I registered 0.00 using the Hanna low range checker. CUC is destroying the algae now and it take about 3 days before I get a noticeable green/brown film on the glass. This seems to be a great value. Given the size of my tank and the rate the GFO is being used up, this is pretty affordable way to control phosphates. I highly recommend.
I would definitely recommend. It is working !! My phosphates are going down, finally.... Excellent service with BRS, as always!
Works great at controlling phosphates. Also, works well in a media reactor as I use it with the TLF media reactor with a maxi-jet pump.
I've been using the brs standard gfo and this gfo makes a huge difference. I couldn't keep my phosphate under .06 with the standard stuff. Now I've got it down to .01 in only the first week of using this product! I'm very happy even though it's a little more money.
i really love this media, i have seen drastic changes while using this. i tends to last long than the cheaper stuff. less dust is a big plus. i must say though what until it is on sales thats when i order it.
This gfo took my phosphates from .5 to undetectable . Amazing stuff now my corals are way more colorful and polyps are fully extended. Couldn't be happier with this product.
BRS' standard gfo is amazing... but this... this takes it to another level. My square 60 gallon salt tank was fill to the bring of slimy green algae. My brother then took this stuff... put it into my two reactors i recently bought and within a week the green disappeared. After 2 months, the water has remained crystal clear. The best time to get this is during their sale which is what we did during their black friday sale. Can't go wrong. Double the power of the standard stuff no joke!
I have used many different types of phosphate removal products and for cost, quanity and effectiveness you can't beat the high capacity version of this GFO. There are a few other products that are as effective but cost more and you get less of it. Why spend more? This is the only practical GFO to use, hands down
Our LFS ran out of RowaPhos and it was going 3 weeks, I tried other gfos but they didn't do it, too much dust or they would just clump and not tumble, gave the high capacity a go and my tank is already looking better. I believe I will be sticking w this from here out.
ez using, little dust.starts cleaning real fast.
Very well constructed and easy to change canisters, mounting option is cool. Makes use of space and utilizes 2 separate elements for individual change, Bottom line is, it makes life much easier! If you have a need for these elements then you have a need for this item.
By using this over the regular GFO I was able to mix with the ROX carbon and fit in one reactor.
Before I bought my GFO reactor I had a terrible problem with nuisance algae, especially hair. A few of the CUC ate it but it was growing too fast for them to keep up with, even when reducing the lights to only about an hour a day. I'm amazed at the difference the BRS GFO made once I started running it. It has completely controllled the phosphate levels in my tank from on average 14ppm down to 0.0ppm and no nuisance algae. It's reduced it so much that I now how to supplement nori for the algae eaters so they don't starve! I'd recommend this for anyone who's serious about controlling their Phosphate levels.
Keeps my phosphate below 0.003 ppm or 0.032 microMolar, which is the limit of detection with the Hanna Ultra Low Range phosphorous detector (HI-736).
This was recommended for my algae problem and I was sick of trying different things and them not working. This is pricy but you get what you pay for, works great!
Awesome product. Works great. Will continue to buy. Highly recommended.
This is the only way I can keep algae under control
The best gfo by far. Worth the extra money from tge regular gfo to the high capacity
Just added GFO in my new BRS dual reactor .Works just as they said it woud .Great product and great veideo to help set up with the tubling of GFO.
I have used both regular and HC GFO. I went with the cheaper regular last time and have regretted it. I highly recommend this product it lasts longer and requires less product to sufficiently do the job.
Very good quality and the price is very good too.
I have used this twice on an off over a number of years, I had a pretty bad hair algae issue and I tried everything, after months of extracting and using phosphate removal stuff, I couldn't get rid of the algae. After adding this back in it took a little while, though no more algae. I still get the green hue on the glass, though it takes longer now before it appears.
I am using a brand new 6 stage BRS RO/DI unit with 150gpd upgrade and booster pump. Yet, I still get a light brown/green haze on the glass daily. I only feed frozen Mysid and Frozen Formula 1 every other day making sure not to over feed. With the exception of shrimp to the BT Anenome and and DT's to the corals. No hair algae or anything bad but that dang haze. Well Folks! No More! I added BRS High capacity GFO (by BRS Calculator) in the BRS GFO reactor and it was cleared by the next day! Actually it's been 3 days and I just went over the glass and really still didn't need it. Awesome Stuff! I only regret not adding this day 1.
I don't know why I didn't use this stuff sooner. Algae was growing faster than we could remove it. Instead of enjoying our reef tank it was becoming a burden. My phosphates were always on the high side but changing our feeding practices and adding cheato to the sump never seemed to substantially change the high readings. I set up a reactor and added High Capacity GFO from BRS. The phosphate readings dropped markedly but the algae stuck around. It was less prolific and pale looking but it was still there. So, on the advice of a fellow reefer, we obtained a sea hare and let it go to work. After 3 weeks virtually all my algae was gone. We added a fresh batch of GFO to the reactor my readings stayed where I want them at about .04 and there's no resurgence of algae. It's been over 6 weeks with no trace algae and my corals have more color to them. Hopefully, we have this licked. When I consider all the work we went through prior to this I don't know why we dragged our feet implementing GFO to our system. BTW, no sea hare was harmed in the removal of the algae. Once there was no more algae to consume our LFS gladly gave us store credit for the returned sea hare.
I strongly recommend this product!!! And i strongly recommend BRS they have excellent customer service!!
Use this in a BRS Reactor and it works perfect, i use less than the amount needed and it still keeps my phosphates down
Need to get your phosphates back in check? This is definitely a fix then. The key to using this GFO is to be regular in changing it and the correct flow through your reactor. A light wave in the surface of the media and changing it out after about 2 weeks works wonders for my tank. Thanks BRS for another great media!
This is a much cleaner, longer lasting GFO than the other standard one that BRS offers. Yes it is more expensive but you get a lot more lifetime out of it and I think there is less tumbling that grinds the GFO particles into smaller pieces and eventually dust. Also out of the box after filing up the reactor there is less dirty water coming out of the reactor which is a plus.
I just started using this product. Easy to add to BRS reactor. Flushes quickly and doesn't have much fines. Will review again after further use.
Although a bit pricy, the High Capacity GFO really does out perform any other Phosphate removal media i have used.
This product works great and has helped reduce the problems i had with water quality. I like that BRS has videos to help make the purchasing decision easier.
High capacity gfo is great. You may pay more but you use less and it doesnt take long to rinse either.
This stuff will completely wipe out your algae problems. I have cut back on the recommended amounts just to give my snails something to do. Ha.
I strongly recommend this product if you need the best performance. It's working great, my tank looks much clean now.
this hc gfo works like a charm well worth the $$$$ yeah buddy
My first impression of this stuff was that it didn't take very long to clean out the "dust" or whatever it is. I put it in my BRS reactor without sponges and ran water through it into my bucket. In the past, this has taken a few gallons to run clear. I think it was about a gallon with the HC GFO. It seems to be doing its job too.
