BRS Bulk GFO Granular Ferric Oxide is a highly effective filter media designed to remove phosphate from both saltwater and freshwater aquariums. As one of the most commonly used filtration media in the industry, GFO plays a crucial role in maintaining pristine water quality and preventing common issues like nuisance algae outbreaks. It works by binding with phosphate, making it unavailable to algae and other unwanted organisms.
This standard granular GFO offers exceptional value and can be effectively deployed in various filtration setups, including filter socks and dedicated media reactors. Its consistent performance makes it an invaluable tool for maintaining ultra-low phosphate levels, which is essential for a healthy reef environment. By keeping phosphates in check, this media helps ensure clearer aquarium glass and a more vibrant display.
BRS Bulk GFO is ideal for any aquarist battling high phosphate levels, struggling with persistent algae, or striving to achieve optimal coral growth. Maintaining ultra-low phosphate levels is critical for SPS and LPS corals, as high phosphates can inhibit their ability to lay down new skeletal material. Proactive use of GFO is a fundamental strategy for preventing algae outbreaks, making it far easier to manage your aquarium's health than treating existing problems.

I put a cup in my reactor with this GFO for a 100 gallons. No green algae will grow.
I had trouble with my GFO clumping. I viewed the online guidance that says to mix with carbon so it can tumble. This has helped considerably.
Works like a charm. Sometimes too good. That said, use with caution. It can easily bottom out your phosphates.
This is the first time we've used GFO. We have not been unable to manage phosphate swings and levels no matter what we do. We've had stable acceptable phosphate levels now for only 2 days but have only been using the product a week in a media bag. So far so good! I thought the process would take longer and if course we still have a lot of monitoring to do. Wish we considered this sooner. We were trying to naturally handle our phosphate issue but failed miserably. BRS GFO to the rescue!
Great Gfo and only one I will use in my tank. Tried seachems gfo as I ran out and it only lasted a couple of days.I highly recommend Bulk Reefs supply GFO
Great quality GFO for a reactor. People here complaining about it don't know how to use it properly.
This product works great with the dual reactors and the pump combo offered by BRS. I really did not have a issue with dust as many have said. The 1.5 Sicce pump gently tumbles the GFO and you can adjust the flow rate, good combo. This greatly reduced my phosphates in my 200 gallon saltwater setup. I will by again, good product in my opinion.
Don’t need much. Just a lil with carbon goes along way. Works great when not used as main source of removal.
Great product and priced well. Great for mixing with carbon in a reactor or tumbling on its own. I've been using this for a year and will continue re-ordering.
I have always had high phosphate in my 300 gal display tank mainly due to VERY HIGH bio load (35+ fishes + inverts). I started converting the tank from a FOWLR to a Mix-Reef tank in Nov, 2018. Over the past few month I noticed my phosphate level constantly staying around 7-8ppm even though I am running both a large refugium, and extra large algae scrubber. After watching Ryan's video on the use and benefit of running GFO I decided to give it a shot. Suprisingly, the results surpassed my expectations. My phosphate level dropped from 7.5ppm to 2.4ppm in less then 24 hours. This reduction is very dramatic, and may course problems in some systems. Nonetheless, I did not see any negative impacts on my corals or other livestock in the tank as a result of the large reduction in such short period of time. I want to point out that I used the BRS calculator to add the correct amount of GFO in a reactor for my tank. After achieving .24ppm phosphate which is spot on per Red Sea, and other reputable brands I decided to reduce the flow through the reactor to avoid falling much lower than 0.2ppm phosphate. In summary, this product does exactly what BRS said it will achieve and that is reduce phosphate levels.
I have used this for over a year with the very best results. My phosphate are staying at zero.
Easy to use in a reactor. Rinses out for in less than 30 secs in my BRS minireactor. Used for over a year with no issues.
I had a phosphorus/phosphate problem in tank with levels over 200+ppb. The Hanna was freaking out flashing. Lol put it in after some recommendations and dropped to 106 in hrs. Keep checking cause if the levels rise up change... just wish I got a bigger bucket.
I'm glad I didn't turn my tank brown was drunk and decided to use this and some carbon in a brs media reactor. Woke up in the morning and tank was clear as possible but turned off reactor my tank is still too new to need this maybe 2 more months.
Very clean, works great!
I wanted to share my experience on how to best use this without turning your water in the tank yellow. When I first used this, I used a very fine filter media bag and placed it on the sump. This absolutely got the GFO all over my sump as these are very fine particles and will tumble in the filter media and swirl like a dust and makes a great mess on your tank. After watching the video here, I bought the carbon reactor and mixed the GFO and Carbon and used the Carbon calculator to makes sure I don't use much. Before running it, I simply pour an RO water on the bottom of the canister like 1/2 gallon of water to rinse out the yellow tint from the GFO. when it was cleared, I installed the reactor and catch the first 1/2 gallon and to my surprise, the water was clean, so I had to pour it back. These stuff works as long that you use the right equipment, otherwise you will scatter the GFO all over your tank. One thing, I put a couple of tablespoon of carbon on top of the mix GFO/Carbon just to stop the GFO leaking on the filter sponge just in case.
Keeps phosphate out of my 120 with half the recommended amount
Love this gfo
Its GFO it does its job
Long lasting and very effective at removing po4
I use it in a reactor in the sump with carbon and it is helping to keep nitrates and phosphates very low.
I really like BRS GFO. I find that it is the best I have used to reducing Phosphates. Good price as well. Worth it.
Run this media thru a the BRS reactor with great results. Keeps my Phosphates in ckeck and last longer than the other brands i have used.
Have had it running for about a month now and has significantly maintained my phosphate at ultra low levels
I've used several different gfo's, mainly rowaphos. I prefer this product much more for several reasons- it's cheaper, better and much more cleaner. I found with rowaphos I would have to run my reactor with at least a gallon of water before it comes out clear. With this gfo it took probably less than half a gallon! Highly recommended
I really like the BRS GFO. I find that it is the best value and best GFO that you can buy. I change mine once a month and it makes a big difference in the Phosphate levels. Great for controlling algae and a bargain price.
I use this GFO in a spyglass reactor to reduce phosphates, which subsequently also assists with algae control in my reef tank. It's price makes a good value.
I use it every month to help with algae control you can tell it works
I really like this product. I use it in media bag in my aio sump and my levels have been low and barely any algae.
Noticeably helps with algae almost immediately
Change GFO monthly. I can tell by looking at the algae in my tank if I am late doing the change.
I've installed a reactor a while ago and have been using different media to filter out the phosphate. This however, hands down, is the best media I've tried.
While the HCGFO is better, you still can't beat the quality and price of regular BRS bulk GFO.
I would highly recommend this product. It helps with keeping algae in check and off your Aquarium glass.
Will definitely order again
I was using Two Little Fishes phosban whatever stuff, it's too fine of a material for my taste. So I switched to BRS's GFO and I am very pleased with it. It comes in larger containers and it's cheaper.
This product really performs when used in a reactor and will last at least a month in my 91 gallon system. My phosphates are no longer a worry for this reefer!
I should have installed a reactor a long time ago.
.i watched a few of your videos and review videos from your customers. i had a lot of problems with my phosphate and this product would help with it.so there was nothing to loss this would have been my last draw. i ordered the BRS GFO Reactor, as well with the GFO. When i started to use this product with in 24 hours my phosphate was zero....i have worked for years trying to get this down to zero i have used different things over the years and nothing works better then this stuff.THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.i have never had a problem since. My phosphate still sits at zero.
Cheapest gfo and works great clean high quality products as always idk how the competiters are still in buisness!
I placed GFO in both my reactors on my two salt water tanks. One fish only the other a 20 gallon long reef tank. My phosphates went down to 0 ppm. Never had that happen till now.Highly recommended for any reefer.
Works as advertised.
Good stuff
great service and customer support
Excellent product
I have been using this GFO for about a year now. I use it along with the ROX carbon on all my tanks. I have had great results from it and see no reason to change what works. I did try the high capacity one when this one was on back order a while ago and I did not see a big difference on performance. Then again my tank is very stable I should not see that much of a difference. I do change it every month along with the carbon so I don't get to push it to its limit. It is not expensive so I see no reason to push it. On occasions it has run for longer than a month as I have been away on business and my readings did not change so it does last longer than the month.
Thoroughly love to watch our PO4 go down to near zero/zero. We need to feed frozen food 2x a day and this helps to keep our PO4 in check!
this keeps my phosphates down, i change this in my Reactor about every 4 to 6 weeks been using this for years
This stuff is great and cheap. Can't go wrong with brs
All of my media purchases have been through BRS, and I would have it no other way. Price combined with great packaging, make this a no-brainer. I can't imagine a system without GFO, and BRS has it down.
Works Great at keeping my phosphates low. Easy to use in my reactor. I mix it with carbon using the recommended ratio. I use the standard granular because I change it more often anyway, because of the carbon loosing its strength before the GFO. If I was running GFO by it self I would get the high capacity.
This is a great product.
This is some good stuff. Helped my phosphates decrease too 0. I just change it out every 2 weeks faithfully and its always worked
This was easy to use, rinses clean quickly.
I only use BRS GFO and it always keeps my phosphates at or very near 0. Highly recommend!
Excellent product. Very satisfied with the results.
Ordered the 1/2 Gallon 2LBS GFO to add into my BRS Mini Reactor. I mixed the GFO with carbon. It was very easy to flush and is doing exactly what it should be doing on my system.
used it for a really long time- it does what it's supposed to do- good stuff!
The container was damaged in shipping and BRS replaced it without any hassle. As for the media, I use it in my AIO to keep algae under control. Awesome filter
I had a problem with Phosphates in my reef tank until now....Thank you BRS for this life line that makes it possible to have excellent water quality. You guys are the best and so are your products.
On my second 1/2 gallon. Removes phosphates and I don't have to worry about low quality. Thank you BRS for my awesome acros.
I have been using this for years...change it out every two weeks and am very happy with the results.
Works great with my BRS reactor
Works great, love this stuff.
I use the GFO in the BRS dual reactor with carbon. Works wonderfully! Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to control phosphates.
Working just like it should. don't know why I didn't do this sooner.
Like the title says. Seems like it does the job. I don't bother measuring phosphate in the water. I'm a bit lazy.
I run this product in my reactor. Phosphate levels stay below detection. Water, rocks, and sand are algae free. I wouldn't run my reef aquarium without it!!! The best part is that a little goes a long way and it's not bad on the pocket either!!!
good stuff
Hits the sweet spot on affordability and cost.
My order was a restock. I find this grade of GFO to be beneficial. Lower fines than others. I circulate a new batch for 5 minutes offline with RO water to remove the fines and have sen no problem when I put it online.
I always use it in my reactor and I never have hair algae.
Perfect, & along with appropriate carbon, rid my tank of phosphates which were causing an outbreak of hair algae.
This media works exceptionally well for the cost. It has rapidly reduced and slowly eliminated my hair algae problem. I highly recommend this product to anyone who is frustrated with algae like I was.
Had a problem starting with bubble algae and one problem area with turf algae. Ordered and used this in a BRS reactor SUPRISE no more algae and no phosphate. Works great, just use less than recommended at first so you don't shock your system. Takes about 3 gallons of RO to flush fines and rust color from the water. Ordered more when I ran out and will continue to use it.
Saw significantly less hair algae after about 2 weeks. Works for me.
One of the best ways to drop those nasty phoshate levels in a hurry. I honestly never tried another brand but I don't intend to if BRS keeps making quality GFO.
Very important piece of the algae free puzzle.
The slightly larger pellet size has made it substantially easier to deal with in a filter sock or reactor the ones I've used in the past.
Easy to use rinse in ro di or with water change water and good to go
Brs Gfo is affective and very easy to use. Just follow the instructions on the container or hit up BRS online and the calculator with help you out.
a good value but don't use the amounts they recommend in the reactor. I followed the advice of a seasoned reefer and used half the recommended amount and it works great! Using too much can effect your alk levels.
I'm assuming by my lack of green dlime and hair algae it has worked as promised. Thanks
I've only had the GFO in for about a week now but I've been testing every day (too much time on my hands) and my phosphate level is definitely on its way down. Not enough time yet to say anything about the algae, but science doesn't lie. I only have one thing, filter socks don't work with this. I put it in and started to rinse it out and it started coming out of the sock like dust (which it is). But that's my lack of experience, not the product.
I wish I had used this in the beginning! I believe it's a must have for a reef to help keep phosphate down and calm the algae growth.
this gfo worked great on the phospate and controlling the algea problem
mix with carbon and it works in my setup
This stuff rocks! Keeps my phosphates at 0. I change it once a month, though I am sure it would last longer if I left it. Never hardens or clogs. Love it!!
very good product i used to run a ATS (alggae turf scrubber) it was great but so much evaporation and maintenance needed each 7 days, also you need to design it very well and do a lot of research ( i spend a lot of hours? a lot of $ on light because u need a watt for gal now imagine in a 300 gal reef tank, also water splash etc, this gfo does the same but less work so then this is GREAT no maintance needed just replenish each month or month and a half
Good product I will keep buying good price
I was watching Mr Saltwater Tank on u-tube ,he turned me on to bulk reef supply. I was having a big algae problem . He said to use BRS bulk Gfo in a reactor .The algae was out of the tank in 3 day /with light out . Wow this is the best my 15 year old tank has ever looker. Also it was a great price and was shipper very fast. Will buy all my need from BRS
This works very well and I have only been using my gfo from brs. Very straight forward I run mine in a canister along with brs carbon in another canister I simply fill, install open my ball valve and rinse with tank water until dust particles at minimal or just until water comes out clear so it helps with a 1-2 gallon water change in my total 90g reef. Also I only have to change it every month and a half to two months on my bio load very good. Thanks BRS!
wow this gfo works fantastic .I had quite a algae problem going ,but in one weeks time have reduced to almost none at all
Started using this GFO in a BRS single reactor mixed with Carbon after having a green dust algae bloom in a newly established reef. I noticed differences the next day. Removing the phosphates completely killed off the algae within a week. Thanks for the advice BRS, good media!!!
It worked great for lowering phosphates... thanks brs!
Great GFO at a great price, Can't go wrong here
I have this in a phosban 150 reactor along with the BRS lignite carbon, I am about a week in and once I got the flow right through the reactor I can tell an immediate difference. I was using seachem sea gel and it worked ok, but this combination works SOOO much better. Nuisance algae has been all but stopped. I used to have to scrape the tank sides about once a week, once I got this stuff up and running I can tell the growth on the glass has slowed WAY down. Phosphates were always pretty low in my tank, but this stuff has it basically at 0, or just above. I have not been running it long enough to probably get it all the way down yet. I not looking back I am going to run this stuff from now on.
Good Product
This works wonders if you follow the instructions. I've been running it for close to a year now, and it is a staple for sure. You must use the correct amounts, and you must change it out. Don't expect results if you are to frugal with it.
I've been using this in a filter sock in my hob filter. Although not the most efficient use of GFO it still does a great job of keeping my phosphates low. I only wish I had a larger setup so I could use a media reactor.
