BRS Bulk Bituminous Aquarium Carbon is a highly effective filter media designed to enhance water quality in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. This commonly used carbon excels at adsorbing unsightly discoloration and unpleasant odors, ensuring your aquarium water remains crystal clear and free of fishy smells. It also plays a crucial role in removing harmful toxins and and other chemicals from the water column, contributing to a healthier aquatic environment.
This bituminous carbon features small to medium pore sizes, optimized for efficient adsorption performance without the premium cost often associated with other carbons. Key specifications include an Iodine Number of 1000, a Mesh Size of 6x10, and a Hardness Number of 90, indicating its robust and effective nature. For optimal results, it is recommended to replace the media every 2-4 weeks, with a suggested dosage of one tablespoon per five gallons of aquarium water. It works well when used in a media bag or a dedicated reactor.
BRS Bulk Bituminous Aquarium Carbon is an excellent choice for any aquarist seeking to maintain pristine water conditions and a vibrant, healthy reef or freshwater setup. Its ability to remove yellowing pigments, eliminate odors, and adsorb toxins makes it an indispensable component of any filtration strategy. This product is particularly beneficial for those looking for a reliable, cost-effective carbon solution to achieve superior water clarity and overall aquarium well-being.

I use this carbon for reef tank in small amounts for 3 days only after a water change. It seems to serve its purpose with out any coral issues. Not a big fan on carbon in a reef tank. But this practice seems yo work for me. Maybe it might work for other reef hobbiest?
Really can’t go wrong with this stuff! Like any other tool in the toolbox right tool for the right job, know your demand and adjust accordingly. I go on the lighter conservative side and all my corals are thriving softies, lps, sps, acros. your tank will tell you if your using too little or too much too often. throw it in a reactor and run it few days a week without any problems. Do tend to use it heavier in my tank with leathers though and have noticed the other coals tend to appreciate it!
The carbon works great and is way more affordable than my LFS for their house brand. Works equally as well in my freshwater systems.
While I can't speak for its toxicity removal properties, I can say that this carbon, along with my UV, keeps my water crystal clear.
Great Carbon for the price!
I know ROX 0.8 is the gold standard carbon these days but for 1/3 of the price I love this bituminous carbon. If you want the higher surface area to match the higher end carbons, just use more carbon! I can double my carbon use and still come out on top, and I like that it rinses clean quickly.
I've purchased their carbon in the past, but must have changed suppliers or quality. This stuff is some of the messiest carbon I've purchased. It just doesn't seem to get clean. After 15 minutes rinsing, I drop it into a bucket of clean water and the water turns pure black instantly. It might do it's job, but takes so much water to clean it, you'd be better off spending more money for a better product. Buyer beware.
After reading other reviews and watching multiple videos, I assumed carbon was the end all, be all... a miracle product that would clarify the water and remove all odors! It is not. That said, it does seem to be somewhat beneficial.
Excellent
great quality and can't mess it up. Just go to calculator on the site and it tells you how much to use.
Works just as good as the big box store brand but costs less. Thanks BRS.
I like to mix this with lignite, and gfo in my reactor. This covers a good range of pore sizes and chemical filtration.
Good stuff, I'd say it's hard to mess it up.
Along with the BRS gfo/carbon reactor great crystal clear water.
Best value for carbon. It cleared up my tank in 1 day sitting at the bottom of my sump in a bag. I imagine that in a reactor it will work that much better. Also comes in a good storage container.
Great product, I’ve used others before but this product is the best with less carbon dust!
Was worried about preserving the bulk reserves. The 5 gallon bucket is top notch. Package quality has me anxious to run out of carbon to have the bucket for other uses. The carbon is also tops. Far less powder fines than expected. Great coarseness and porosity. Quickly gave clear water quality.
This carbon can't be beat for the price. Brs has a great video comparing all of their bulk carbons and this one suits my needs just fine. My water is crystal clear and it took the odor away.
I like the product a lot. the price is pretty good. It seems to work very good in my reactor
Best bang for the buck! As always BRS doesnt disappoint!
I bought this for my carbon reactor. It helped clear my sand debris while I was setting up my tank. I already changed it once, and it rinses clear pretty quick.
Like the grain size and works well in the BRS reactor.
This carbon seems to be working fine would use again
I use this carbon in my gfo and carbon reactor and love it
With in a couple of hours after installing according to the directions, noticed the yellow was gone. My coral look brighter and the overall water quaility looks great. Thank you for this product.
This is high quality Activated carbon at an incredible price! Other carbons of similar cost are not of the high quality of the Activated Carbon which BRS provides. I could not be happier with the product! It is the only Carbon I run in my reactors!
Wow! BRS has really delivered! I got the single carbon reactor, and the five gallon bucket of carbon. The difference in my water clarity is like night and day! I am already noticing more coralline growth, improved colors of my corals and my zoos have opened up very well. I was equally impressed by the packaging, and the surprisingly small amount of fines in a container this size. Well done BRS!
great carbon at great price would recommend to anyone looking for great carbon. can use in media bag if you don't run a reactor
use this stuff in my gfo reactor combo
This product was treated with phosphates and leaches them into the water. Got the email from BRS to prove it. Don't waste your money on this if you're starting a reef tank. It does clear the water, but promotes algae growth. Go with ESV carbon, no phosphates.
Works well and the price is good. I personally like the cheaper carbon almost as well as the more expensive stuff so I always purchase this. I've been doing this for many years and this carbon does the trick.
Good inexpensive carbon product. I use it in the felt drawstring bags also purchased from BRS. Cleans the cloudiness out of the water in my reef tank after a few hours. Definitely recomment this product
Seems to have less dust and faster rinse time than "equivalent" brands that are usually found at LFS. Better, it costs less than half as much!
Bought the gallon size and and is perfect for plenty of refills on my BRS dual reactor fully filled.
This stuff is perfect for my refugium! I rinsed the dust off with a little RO water and it's keeping the water crystal clear! I get it from BRS because it would easily cost me double from my over priced local fish store!
Product is great quality would buy it again thank you.
we use this carbon as filter material in our custom made high class ceramic pet drinking fountains we sell all over the globe. We like it, then it's low on dust and keeps the water nice and clear for weeks.
i love it its cheap and there is soo much of it if i tried to buy a gallon of carbon at my aquarium store ( i live in souther california btw) it would cost at least 20 to 25 dollars. plus if bought the dual reactor and it is so much better running carbon through a reactor than through a bag. chemipure aint got nothing on my BRS dual reactor. maybe i will buy some chemi pure and run it through my reactor i saw it on a youtube video it seems legit.
Little dust, easy to rinse, worked as expected - couldn't be happier.
I bought this because it would be cheaper then replacing with Fluval media. I really liked this, and I will definitely re-buy this. When I put it in a filter bag, it does need a bit of rinsing to get the dust out of every nook and cranny. Running this and GFO keeps my tank spotless, and parameters are great. Thanks BRS!
Some reviews said it was a bit dust and i gave to say i dont think its any more dusty than any other carbon. I think it is the best stuff for the price. Great pice and great product.
It's a bit dusty, but not nearly as bad as most carbon out there. It does it's job in keeping the water clear longer than most carbon on the market. Requires a good gallon to gallon and a half of RO/DI water to rinse out before using.
They say its not the best stuff...but man this stuff really clear up your water...very happy with it :)
Stuff is easy to rinse and makes my tank crystal clear
nice and cheap way to get a lot of carbon and not have to worry about it running out. We run 5 tanks and change carbon biweekly with water changes, and this is a far more economical way of buying carbon. No complaints with the product, and will be buying again, should we run out!
Great price with low dust. It works great in a reactor.
I've been using this carbon in a BRS reactor and my water stays crystal clear. It saves a lot of money vs other name brands.
Much cleaner than the bulk stuff I get at the LFS. Does a fine job, rinses easily.
easy to use, clears my tank up nicely.
I finally found a place to get carbon at bulk. I run through carbon so fast that having a source like Bulkreefsupply is perfect. Works just like any standard carbon and it does the job. Very convienent to be able to by in bulk supply.
This carbon has very little dust, and I have had much better results using this over several of the large name brands you'd find at fish or pet stores
I have a 100 gallon heavily stocked SPS tank with heavy GFO and carbon use due to my tang population. The BRS bituminous carbon is by far the best cost saving choice and maintains my needs as well as any of the name brand labels. It seems to have lower dust then other aquarium carbons I've used. The carbon removes yellowing quickly and for and extensive period of use. For the same quantity as other brands BRS bituminous carbon seems to work better for me.
Easy to rinse product. Great for my tank.
I use this and the DI resin and get 0 TDS for my filtered water!! My water from tap hits approx. 118 tds. With a max shift container fo this and the dual di resin filter I get 0 TDS for well over 300 gallons of filtered water. That beats those API cartridges whichrange from 25-100 gallons for $30.
I use allot of carbon for my 4 tanks so buying in in the smaller containers that you can get at the LFS is just not economical. I had been looking for somewhere to purchase it in bulk when someone suggested BRS and I have been getting here ever since. Thanks again for making reefing a little bit more affordable!
