BRS Bulk Biopellets are an advanced filter media designed for saltwater and freshwater aquariums. Made from 100% natural Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), these biopellets effectively remove nitrates and phosphates that accumulate from fish waste and food breakdown. This process is crucial for maintaining vibrant coral coloration, ensuring healthy fish, and preventing undesirable algae outbreaks in your aquatic system.
These biopellets serve as an excellent solid carbon source, promoting the growth of denitrifying bacteria within the aquarium. For optimal performance, it is recommended to use 1 cup (8 fl. oz or 236 mL) of BRS Bulk Biopellets per 50 gallons of system volume. Their application also contributes to phosphate removal, potentially reducing the need for other phosphate control methods when combined with careful feeding. Implementation is straightforward, requiring only an inexpensive fluidized reactor and a pump.
This product is ideal for reef aquarists seeking an efficient, low-maintenance solution for nutrient control. It offers a superior alternative to traditional methods like frequent water changes, refugiums, or complex sulfur reactors, which can be less efficient or require significant upkeep. By simplifying the process of maintaining low nitrates and phosphates, BRS Bulk Biopellets empower hobbyists to achieve pristine water quality and a thriving, algae-free reef environment with ease.

All you can do set it and forget It will kick nitrate all the way but need a time The process of bacteria population done gradually . Finally you will not need GFO As I recently take GFO out
very happy no problems used full dose 125gal tank
My reactor from reef octopus is so powerful even with slowing the flow down needed heavy pellets. These are perfect as all others would go up and out too soon and litter the sump. Also do not need so much for the same enrichment of the 180 reef tank.
Ive been using biopellets for about a year now and i tried a couple of known name brand of biopellets all of them work the same but i would recommend brs because pellets are bigger and doesnt get sticky like everyone on this pannel i would recommend to start 1/4 to 1/2 of the recommended dose and leave it running do not touch unless you have to or a power outage
Works great. Start off with less than 1/2 The recommended dosage. Add the rest slowly throughout the coming months
These are just as or better than other Brands. I've found use a 1/4 as much as prescribed. They work better and faster this way. Dissolves very slow. I've had mine in 8 months and not much has dissolved but kicks nitrates and Phosphates butt 24/7. I don't even run GFO anymore after a month with this on my system. No need.
Pellets where smaller than i'm used to but aside from that they tumble great as long as you soak them for 48 hours. stripped my water clean in no time.
I started to use bio-pellets about a month ago. So far so good. I decided to start with much less than suggested and test my water parameters. It is a good thing I did that. I am using about half of what is recommended for my size tank and my numbers are doing great. So I am not going any higher. My skimmer has been putting out a very dark gump. I assume that it is working as everywhere I read from, that is what it is supposed to look like. I am using the pellets with the BRS reactor so I was able to adjust the flow to where they tumble nicely.
Have the Reef Octopus BioChurn 120INT on a 120 gal reef tank using BRS biopellets and the ZeoBac, ZeoSnow, Zeo 7 system....within one week my water is SOOO clear and coral is SOOO happy! Awesome product!
Been using these since the I started my bio pellets reactor ! They don't grind down fast! A nice and very much will be reordering !
This product is so easy to use and works great, just make sure you give it time to work.
These pellets work fairly well in reactors but only with lots of maintenance. A larger than normal % of them will float and clog your reactor.
The BioPellets worked great. My son and I have used these several times.
Dosed the recommended amount: 1 cup per 50 gallons. I dosed 2 cups for my 100gal tank. Day 5 I came home from work in the morning and saw my tank was extremely cloudy (normally crystal clear water column). I noticed a bad odor coming from the sump area. I discovered my Green Bird Wrasse had jumped from the tank, and a few hours later my Rusty Angel was dead on it's side. Bio Pellets will cause I major drop in available O2 levels in your tank. BE VERY CAREFUL with these pellets. DO NOT start off with the recommended dosage. I would start with 1/4th of the dose. Also, make sure you have a VERY GOOD skimmer to remove the increased skimmate from these pellets. I have stopped running my reactor and hope that when I get home in the morning I don't have anymore dead fish.
I've used TLF pellets with good results. These BRS pellets are larger and seem to be less dense. I'm having a floating issue with a small % of them. The rest of them won't settle down to my satisfaction. The tend to hover in the middle of my reactor. Time will tell!
Works good for nitrate so far..
I was sent the BRS brand of bio pellets after having issues with TLF brand floating and clumping. I had no issues with the BRS brand from day one. Now lets see if the bio pellets help reduce my nitrates.
I've tried a few different types of biopellets and I seem to keep coming back to these. They tumble well, and don't seem to clump like other do. I have them running in two TLF reactors run in series which holds just about 1000 ml of pellets. They seem to work pretty well as i have never had a nitrate or phosphate issue but that's all purely anecdotal.
Perfect match for my Reef Octopus 3000 reactor.
Works good for nitrate reduction but I dont see it helping with phosphates in my tank.
Not sure of the quality of the pellets just yet, my concern is when i received my order the jar was open and the pellets spilled all over, I emailed BRS and received no response.
These tumble great in my little media reactor and keep nitrates and phosphates at 0, what more can you ask for? I only got the 500ml bag for my 30 gallong nano with a mix of coral and live rock and have had no issue with algae blooms and such like others. Just follow the directions, and if you have an established tank, start with very little so you don't get a big bloom. It's all in the directions.
Been using them for over 1 year now. Using a Reef Octopus reactor and large water flow. I have had NONE of the problems some people are reporting. Nitrates and Phosphates remain below detectable using Red Sea tests kits.
I have been running biopellets in a BR 140 chamber for nearly 5 months. I switched to Ecobac pellets due to rapid degradation of the BR biopellets and guess what; the Ecobac pellets degraded even faster. On the plus side the biopellets did completely remove all nitrates and phosphates, undetectable on testing. Unfortunately, the SPS corals, and clams did not respond well, slow tissue necrosis and cynobacteria was a major side effect of the organic carbon influx induced by the biopellets. The whitish residue from the degradation of the biopellets coats all plumbing surfaces and sides of sump and skimmer. For heavy bio-loaded FOLR tanks the biopellets would work perfectly, cyanobacteria as consequence, but I would not recommend this product for SPS reef tanks. The LPS corals were fine with normal growth of zoanthids and other colonies. I have taken the biopellet reactor off my 230 display. Experiment over.
8 months after starting using BRS biopellets in my Innovative Marine media reactor still cannot get nitrates down, it seems to be stuck at 10-20 ppm. No negative side effects like bacteria or diatoms boom, but I was hoping to get results faster. Started dosing Brightwell Microbacter7, hope it will properly seed the reactor with better bacteria strain and start bringing down nitrates
I have been running the BRS product now for a few weeks. Like some of the other reviewers, I have not noticed a significant uptick in the amount of skimmate being pulled out of my tank, but the skimmate that does come off now is exponentially more rank than before. I can report that my nitrate and phosphate levels are below the measuing ability of my test kits, having gone from 10ppm nitrate and 40 ppm phosphate previously.
After 4 months the BRS biopellets were removed due to rapid degradation with fine plastic silt accumulating everywhere down-stream of the reactor via the effluent. After conferring with the BRS Tech Advisers, they suggested moving a greater volume of water through the reactor to mitigate accumulation of too much bio-mass. The accumulation was clearly fine particles of the biopellet material and not associated with biologic bacterial cells. The added water-flow simply accelerated the break down of the pellets. I have switched to Ecobak pellets and will restart the reactor. I receive all of my dosing, RODI and filter media from BRS and have always been very satisfied. I feel this product is defective however.
Biopellets seem to be the wave of the future. They work, it is obvious. These pellets seem to be a bit larger than some.
I am very pleased with the nitrate reduction since running biopellets in the BR140 reef octopus reaction chamber on my 240 gallon reef tank. Nitrates went from 5 ppm to undetectable in 16 weeks. The downside at this point is a rapid degradation of the pellets leaving a fine but thick pasty emulsion on the upper segment of the chamber, return plumbing, and sump / protein skimmer. The degradation was rapid between 15 - 18 weeks I noticed a steady accumulation of biopellet emulsion. I have rerouted the output side of the reactor through my filter sock in fear that this emulsion may have an adverse reaction on the tank inhabitants and corals.
The pellets tumble nicely with an Eheim 2000 and bashsea reactor. Pellets don't clump either. Time will tell if notates are lowered as they have only been tumbling a week now
If your tank is already up and running DON'T!!! use this stuff. It killed my whole tank slowly but surely. It made everything healthy and brighter at first then came the cyano bacteria . I immediately removed it and did a massive water change to get rid of any of the bacteria it created but I was too late and over the next 6 months no matter what I did it didn't help and now I have a tank full of rock and a starfish.
works good for nitrate reduction but I dont see it helping with phosphates in my tank.
I've been running the stuff for 9 months and have been very happy with the results. The last time I ordered I ordered the 1000ml and that's the small size shown in the picture, this last time I accidentally ordered the 500ml, thinking it was the small size I ordered before and was disappointed. My fault of course. I really think the two small sizes should be listed in cups instead of ml since the calculator only shows the number of cups recommended.
I have been running these pellets in my DIY reactor for about 8 weeks now with great results. I havent noticed much of an uptick in my skimmate, but nitrates are down and algae is almost completely gone. I may have to step up feeding or supplement feed my crabs and snails soon.
Been using for about 2 years, on both my tanks resolved my hair algae and kept it away. This is my main source of nutrient export.
Just started running the biopellets. Will be a month to see how effective they will be. But for the price, cant beat it!
I've been using BRS biopellets on my tank for a little over 6 months now, and have been getting great results for about 4 months. The first 2 months were spent fighting cyano outbreaks despite not having high nitrates or phosphates. I was doing 20% water changes every week and fed very lightly. After turning my UV off (it's inline after the biopellet reactor) the cyano went away within 2 weeks. I haven't run the UV since and have had wonderful results. Nutrients stay nice and low and the corals and fish are all flourishing. So after a bumpy start (probably my fault for running the UV) the pellets are performing very well and doing exactly what they are described to do.
Great product at a good price. The only Bio Pellet brand I use.
This is the first BRS product I have to give negative feedback on. I'm a regular customer and always have great things to say about there products BUT these bio pellets are not cut out to be what described. I'm running 500 ml in a reef octopus br-110 with a model 2 pump. The pump is near new and very very strong. The problem is after the first few weeks they work great but as they begin to breakdown which they are meant to do they start to clump and and cause problems. Now if your reading this your initial response is to say that there isn't enough pressure and trust me that is not the case. I borrowed a second BR-110 reactor from a friend and used Ecobak pellets on one tank and the BRS with fresh pellets. This was an experiment I wanted to compare. Same pumps and all, after 4 months the ecobak pellets never clumped or had any issues and took the nitrates to 0 from 110-120. The second tank with the BRS pellets was clumping as usual and only took the nitrates to 80-90 from 100-110. This is just my comparison and opinion but if it comes to bio pellets ecobak worked the best. I still love BRS and will continue purchasing all my other necessities but the pellets are not their best product.
I've had this setup on my tank for three weeks and now my nitrates are already starting come down. great price compared to other brands.
I just started using them, but the product was delivered fast, and seems as advertised.
Would definitely recommend BRS bio pellets, easy to use and nitrates are non existent.
tumbles nice just wish they were cheaper...pellets in general
A short time ago I purchased the BRS dual Medea reactor for GFO,CARBON, BIO, whatever. I have read a lot about this stuff and I will be applying this system to my 16gal nano when I arrive at my next duty station in San Juan, PR. I know it sounds like I am installing a Chevrolet big block engine in a Mini Cooper, but why not give it a shot!
I was running GFO in my BRS Reactor and I was having to change it every two weeks. My Phosphates and nitrates were on the high side for me so started to do research on biopellets and decided to give then a try. Since having them running in the system the levels have dropped greatly. I will update this in about a month or so as to get the full capabilities of this wonderful product.
i added this to my 1 year establishe reef tank.it will cloud the tank for a few days.do not panic.after a little over a month my nitrates went way down and have been at 0 6 months now. only con is they cost alot imo
The pellets are tumbleing nicely,They are kind of expensive, work great my nitrates are always low,Product works as advertised.
This prodect is very good and has a reasonable price on it
I bought these to run in my BRS reactor but recently switched over to Chemi-pure elite. Nice product but got nervous looking at forums and people were stating that once you use them, you can't stop. One if the reasons were serious nitrate spikes if you do. I'm not sure if this is false or true. However with reef tanks their is alot of misguiding info on forums. I may take the plunge after my current media depletes.
This is my 1st experience with biopellets and so far so good! I have started these on one of my tanks just to see how it works before I switch everywhere. The cost is great and the kids like watching them
With all of the reviews that I had read on biopellets, they seemed to be hit or miss. I have them running in a two little fishies 550 reactor and removed the two sponge filters. They do fit through the wholes in the red covers but as long as flow is kept under control they can't make it high enough to escape. Since the introduction of the biopellets on Nov, 25th my phosphates have dropped 28% without a water change and nitrates have dropped by 50% with a water change (I forgot to test nitrates after the water change). I did have a slight algae bloom where the water got cloudy for roughly a week after the introduction of the pellets. Other then that one side of the pellets tends to clump and not flow as well as the other. This is more than likely due to the reactor not being built specifically made for biopellets.
Been using this product for a couple of weeks and have noticed that my levels are lowering by the week. Great product.
These things work great my nitrates are always low and they last a long time! They are kind of expensive but not so bad for how long they last! Would buy again.
Great product for bio-pellets and the price is reasonable compared to some other sources for bio-pellets. I found soaking the pellets in new salt water for a day or two helps prevent the pellets from wanting to float inside of the reactor. I must stress: In order to have success with bio-pellets, you must follow the instructions (the BRS videos are helpful), and above all, be patient! Bio-pellets are not a quick fix. I run these pellets in a NextReef solid media reactor. I plumb the output of the reactor into a tee I installed on the input of my protein skimmer. I keep the flow relatively slow through my reactor. The only time I ever see signs of the pellets clumping is when I go several months without cleaning the screen in the reactor... when that happens, one side near the bottom does not get stirred so well. However, I'm easily able to maintain a low flow without worrying about clumping issues. Great product! I like being able to order it from the same place I get my other consumable supplies.
My first experience with biopellets. So far, on my 155 gal system, I'm breaking in the first 200 ml, and I've not had any problems. At the 3 week mark, so need more time to see effects. Going slow as recommended.
I got the 1 Gallon jar for my 90 gallon. After running the reactor for 4 months, I am still on my original first cup. But I have to take it down since it is really doing a great job removing all N03 and P04 that my corals are starting to get pale. The product works but hard to control if you are not testing your water weekly.
Product works as advertised. They have def helped with my phosphate and nitrate issues. Great Value
I have hade these running for about a week now in a Kent phos reactor a had. The pellets are tumbleing nicely. I haven't had any chemestry changes yet, but it is early. My water does seem to look clearer. Looking forward to the 4-8 week results
Ive been using bio pellets for a while now and it does wonders for my tank.
They are doing what they say they will.....so far so good
Dropped my nitrates from 4ppm to .25ppm in 10 days. A little pricey but what isn't nowadays.
im very pleased with this product. my tank was only 2 months old when i started using biopellets and it has done a great job keeping phosphates and nitrates very low. i haven't had any problems with it or caused any trouble in my tank, and it's super low maintenance. i don't have evidence, but i believe i had helped my tank mature a great deal. long term usage and cost/benefit make sense at this point so ill keep using it.
Helping my tank no problems yet
i use bio pellets for over a year now and nitrates are 0 - 2 ppm. but did take about 6 weeks to really put a bite into them once i started using them
First off, lets start by saying I set this up about 9 months ago. I must say, I love this reactor! It is a must have for everyone who wants a simple product that makes a huge difference. I keep getting asked "what did I do to my system" because it looks amazing! It's very easy to set up, although I must say, don't over fill the reactor, as it will plug the screen. I love it so much, not only have I convinced multiple friends to purchase it, but I bought the 1 gallon container of bio pellets, as I plan on using this reactor from many years to come. Also, I mean no disrespect to the GFO reactor, as I've used one for multiple years; however, if your debating between the gfo or bio pellet reactor; I recommend spending the extra money on the bio-pellet reactor, not only does it out perform the GFO reactor, but in the long run you will save money!
Been using these for several months now. While not at zero nitrates, they keep my levels very very low in a tank that I often overfeed. So that is a plus in my book.
Biopellets have truly saved my tank. I had an overly aggressive hair algae problem after a powerhead blew up and killed everything in my tank. The algae grew and grew with no avail. Then I discovered the biopellets and started running them. The algae is no longer there. It died within 4 weeks of installing the biopellets. I will never stop using them.
same as major brand pellets that i used to buy just better price at brs also the pellets are bigger so they want go through the screen. thank you
After 2 weeks nitrates are way down.
love it
I have been using this for about two weeks and have not seen any results so far, The pellets did clump up a little at first and now seems to be tumbling better. Will update soon.
i had a lot of hair algae before i used BP. it took about 3 months to start to work but slowly my hair algae died
After several months with this new material I have mix results. Plants are growing again (they stopped with the previous brand). it clumped. Maybe be I did something wrong: I presoaked them before usage and maybe I should not have done that...
Been looking to go with biopellets for while and finally took plunge. These are just as advertised and only had running for a week now but already nitced changes in tank nitrates dropping tank looking better says can take 4 to 8 weeks to start but already improving tank so look forward to see what happens in the next few weeks
I had to remove the pellets, after 10 weeks later because outbreak of dinoflagellate. Took me 3 month to getrid of that monsters, but I would like to try pellets again soon.
I purchased the 500ml BRS Bio Pellets. These pellets really works and fast. In 24 hours, my reactor was full of bacterial. Just make sure you have a good flow through your reactor or the bacterial will clog the reactor. I had to remove the sponge material from my reactor to keep it from clogging. I am glad I purcahsed the 500ml because I think if I had anymore, it would be way to much bacterial in my reactor.
it was very easy to set up. just have to remember to put the corse mesh twords the top the reactor to keep the goodies in.
I just introduced the biopellets into my system a few days ago. I can definately say something is going on. My skimmer has already started to increase production of skimmate, so that tells me its starting to work. I can't wait to see the results in 4-8 weeks!
after having 30 ppm nitrate in my reef tank its now down to zero after 2 months and i couldnt be happier.....buyer beware tho i used the brs reactor with a maxijet1200 and wasnt getting enough flow the pellets got all clogged up and created a big cyano outbreak but after i realized this i fixed it all up got a goood flow going through n they r working great now.....just be weary of how they r flowing because if they clump up it could spell disaster.....from my experience i recccoemd maximum flow as much as your reactor and pellets could handle....and do yourself a favor get the Reef Octopus Reactor and a mag 3 n uwont even have to keep an eye on the thing
I have been using them for 2 months now in a BRS reactor. Water is SO clear!!! Na is @ "zero" and tank and corals look great, I did have a little loss of color at first but it bounced right back, I am using 500ml in a BRS reactor with a maxjet 1200. Another weapon for us to use.. thanks
they seem to be working, i had a small bacterial bloom then my water is crystal clear. skimmer production has increased somewhat. i'm sure by the recomended 8 wk period i'll have 0 nitrates. its worth buying and trying out
These reduced my nitrates from over 50 to between 2.5 and 5 on my salifert test kit and reads as zero on my elos kit. I gave it 4 stars in performance because I am not getting zero readings on both test kits yet.
pellets are working great and have started to lower the nitrates and also tumble very nicely in the reactor
with all of the bio pellet craze going on I figured I would give this a shot. All I can say is it works as advertised. My guess is this will be the future of reef keeping.
I had my doubts but I have been using these for 6 weeks now and I am absolutely amazed. I tested nitrate each week and for the first month the nitrate slowly creeped up. Boom week 5 they were almost undetectable with my salifert kit. This is so easy to use I wish someone had come out with these years ago .
Hard to really review these for long term as they are just starting today in my modded zeo rx. The Bio pellets are just as described and are a great price for the same product as elsewhere. As always BRS has the hook-up at the best prices.
