I have owned 5 of these. I have grown soft coral, LPS and even easier SPS. They definitely grow coral, look nice, and are easy to use. However, they do t last. The longest I’ve had one go is 4 years. Most die around 2. So they really aren’t the “affordable” option when you factor in constant replacement. My latest one is just under 2 years old and started oozing goo into my tank.
I have two of these over my Nuvo 40. One was new and one was used of unknown age. I did have to replace the lens on the used one, but it was cheap and simple to do. They are both working well after one year in my possession. The app works well and being able to import other user's light programming is a nice feature. My biggest complaint is the fans can get a bit noisy at times. Be sure to take them down and blow the dust out occasionally.
I have two of these on my Innovative Marine 75 EXT. Great coverage and they give the water a nice sparkle. The app is functional and adding the lights was pretty straight forward. After looking over others light settings, I went with BRS recommendations at 50% power. Overall, nice light for the price.
Been running it for 8 months on my nano and it's been great. No issues thus far. Wifi would have been awesome thus not full five stars.
I have three of these over my 40 gallon tank. They are super easy to program and gives off a great shimmering light. But I have been having nothing but problems with them. It’s been running for about 6 months. One has completely stopped working. The ones that do work the fan has either crapped out or squeal like crazy. AI customer service has been super helpful in getting them replaced but I have been running on back up lights until then.
I enjoy the ease of control and programming of the light and app, with pretty decent colors. I have purchased 3 of these lights and after 2 weeks I got a high pitch noise from the center light. Easy enough I just contact AI and let them know. Well after a month of back and forth emailing them, they tell me I need to call them. They have video clips and sound bites through email, but now wants me to basically start the process over via phone call. Bad customer service is worse than a bad product imo. I think I'll be trying reef breeders.
I have one that is going out now as well!! it is less than 2 yrs old as well. I will try a different Manufacturer this time.
I’d give this product no stars if I could! This has no bearing on BRS, they are awesome and the preferred place to buy reefing products. My issue is with aqua Illumination. I bought a white 16 HD Prime almost two years ago through BRS. The light was great u til it wasn’t. It shorted out over my tank a week ago. I sent it off to the AI service center and of course they said it would cost less to buy a new one. Just for information the suggested life span on AI’s website for the HD primes is 5 to 10 years. Not 2 but 5 - 10. I will not waste any more money on AI products and after dealing with their crappy customer service I will make sure not to recommend their products either.
The light worked well for growing lps. Features were great. My bad review is because mine broke at less than two years old. Reefing is expensive and I expect products to last 5-10 years. I will not be buying another Ai Prime. I would rather spend a little more upfront for a product that lasts.
I've had tuna blue kessils for many years now, and finally decided to make the switch to these prime lights on my Red Sea Reefer 250 (have 2 on there). I run a mixed reef with some SPS, but didn't need crazy output that required bigger lights. Even though I liked my kessils, I do feel like the AI light makes things look crisper and there is still a little shimmer in the sand. The 2 lights cover the three feet well. My biggest concern was proper light settings, as kessil prides themsleves on the perfect color mix regardless of the what you tune the color knob to. AI actually puts a number of profiles online from proven reefers that you can pull down. My only criticism what it wasn't very intuiative on how do actually get that aip file onto the app to the lights. I finally found directions, but think they could have put that in the box with the lights. All in all, great light and easy to adjust. Running the David Saxby profile on my tank and really happy with the color mix. The bluetooth also keeps me from running yet more cables to the lights to adjust on a controller (as my old kessils had a separate controller wire).
This is an initial impression review. I have a full review on my YouTube channel, Puff Daddy Reef. I took some initial PAR readings and sound tests with a decibel meter. I can't wait for the BRS deep dive on the thing. The light is still proving itself out for coral growth, so I will speak to other features here. Pros: -Proven spectrum enhanced with 3 more LEDs -Powerful! PAR output directly under light is on par (lol) with the Kessil A360X. Some caveats though, see my YouTube review for numbers and full details. -Moonlight in a unique yellow color (this a con if you don't like yellow moon lights) -Minimal light separation but still more than Kessil. Color separation shows up more on camera than with your eyes. -Built in Bluetooth works flawlessly for adjusting settings. -Light has the same great looks. -Removable dust screen so you can clean off the ugly dust buildup on the old versions. Also enables you to clean the fan. -Price, this light will grow coral and has plenty of power. All for only $210 + mounting hardware. Cons: -No more wifi which means you can only configure settings from the phone. No more offsite or desktop control of your lights. -User interface on the phone app could be improved, especially in the manual demo mode. -The fan is pretty loud at 100% output. I measured the decibel output of it on my YouTube review -Zero mounting hardware included, not even a screw. Don't forget to buy a mounting kit! Summary: Better LED cluster with improved but not perfect blending. Plenty of power and stylish looks. Wifi replaced with Bluetooth. Still a little loud at 100% but for most small nano tanks you probably won't need to run it that hot. Very good light for the price. Happy Reefing, Puff Daddy Reef.
