I've had these lights for several years and they work great.
Biggest pos .tried this light out thinking maybe they fixed there lens issue Purchased it 11-2-24 finally set tank up sept of 2025 and this thing is garbage already. So technically only used 3 months lol.out of warranty. Save your $$$ .go kessil no problems at all
Have been using this light for a few years. Rented a par meter from BRS when I originally got the light to dial it in. I've been happy with it until now. I got a new phone a few months ago and went to check settings on myAI app. The light was no longer listed in my app. Was told this isnt a problem and was given steps to add an already configured light back to the app. For whatever reason the app wont complete the process of adding my light. Ill need to factory reset the light, rent a par meter from somewhere, and reconfigure the whole thing over again. Next lighting system I get will not be from AI.
I bought four of these lights easy to set up and looked great after about a year then 3 of the 4 lights melted and stopped working. I wouldn't recommend
I think that its very easy to use the AI app and they provide a decent spread of light for smaller reef tanks aswell but the problem is that after sometime, it was about two years for my first light the lens will burn up and that material will melt around some of the leds. Its not expensive to get replacements lens from AI but its just aggravating to have to replace them on these things, especially when they cost what they do.
Sad to say this but This product has design defect. the UV and Violet lens burns out. They have offered no fix to the design just replacement lens.
this was easy to install but had to buy to replace identical light that had a burned lens.
I have 2 16HDs and 2 Hydra 32s and they all have the same problem. The UV and Violet LEDs melt the lens even at low settings. My lights never get about 50% UV or violet and I have to change the lens yearly if not more often for the past 3 years. It’s a shame to because I really enjoy the user interface of the AI. Will be switching to Radion XR30 pros. Getting a 2 star because they’re not bad lights for the price but don’t think melting lenses yearly should be a feature, call me crazy
The lights work ok but the lens continuously bubble and need replaced. While they will send replacement lens during the warranty period it isn’t worth it.
I bought 2 brand new and within a year the UV led burned up and melted the lens. Most people say that the lenes melt but I think the Leds are allowed to be driven way to high. Color and growth was okay with these lights. Definitely a lot of shadows. Only reason it's a 3 star is since that it was within the warranty I shipped them back and they sent me 2 new ones
First off AI primes are great. I have 3. They are running my 60 gallon aquarium. (Overkill but I like to not have shading) The lights have the option to customize your setting however you choose extremely easily. It’s all in a well designed app. Let’s say you want to work on your tank at 10pm when the lights are off. With a click of a button on the app you can turn them on. You can even have a timer set for them to go back off to your original settings when you are done messing around. I see 2 main complaints for the 1 star review. Which is not warranted. These are small problems with an easy fix. I get it we want everything to work perfectly forever. But that’s not the reality. So here are the complaints with the fixes. 1. The lens melting.. It’s all in the UV setting. When you run your UV above 60ish percent you can expect the lens to melt overtime. It’s not the actual light but the lens. I would suggest not running UV any highter then 60 percent. (Mines at 52) The UV LED itself isn’t a strong light to begin with so there is no need to run it that high. UV doesn’t produce a lot of light. There is 7 other LEDs on the light. Run those high. I really only use 4 LEDs on the light. The blues and whites. I run those at 50 percent. I’m growing everything from torches to zoas to acans to SPS acros in my tank. It’s a strong light! If the lens does melt it’s only 5 dollars to replace. Simple fix and easy solution. 2. The Fan. Some people may have an issue with their fan. (I’ve replaced mine) Whether it goes out or becomes noisy it’s cheap to replace (20$) and extremely easy to replace. A few screws to open it up. A couple screws on the fan and then unplug the old fan and plug the new fan in. No wiring. Simply plug and play. This is an amazing light with unlimited ways to run your light settings. It’s easy to use. It’s relatively cheap. It grows all coral. The parts are easy to replace. Mounting options are great. They are silent (unless your fan is going out). And they hold their value. 5 star review for me. I absolutely love these lights. BRS made a great video on these. I’d go check that out. It helped me a lot.
Both the Primes I have on my display refugium have now burnt out, the UV lenses melted, the power units ran oddly hot and the fans were in overdrive and noisy. I replaced my AI Hydras once already on my display and discovered the lenses for UV and blue had melted/warped also. When it's time for another upgrade, I don't think I'll ever use AI again. Very disappointed.
I had two of these. One died within a few weeks. Customer service was good and replaced it. Both started melting within a year and completely gone within a year and a half.
I have 2 of these with the Aquatic Life 48” led hybrid set up. These are on the two ends and I have an AP9X in the middle. I like the AI primes. Easy app and I’ve not needed to turn them all the way up. Depending on your tank size, using one or multiple of these would provide plenty of PAR. Compared to the other lights I have mounted with these, I would rate them as follows. 1. Kessil AP9X 2. AI Prime 16HD 3. The Aquatic Life 48” LED hybrid
Works good for my nuvo 20
Customization is cool, but one of the two i got has a different blue intensity when theyre both set to the same intensity, apparently they allow for up to a 7% tolerance , which isnt noticable at higher percentages, but is most noticable during ramp up and down. Minor annoyance, although i havent had the chance to test it with a par meter to see how much difference it makes to the coral.
Currently have this light on a heavly stocked mixed biocube 32 running the Saxby BRS AB+ Program. Been running this light for 2 years and had once issue with the fan becoming off balance making it q
I have had two of these units and one had the lens melt and the other one flickers uncontrollably if run over 40%. Don’t waste your money!
Ran this light for 5 months and the fan started knocking really hard and shutting off. They replaced it after I sent then a video with the sound. 4 months into the new light the lense started to melt from the center out. Light isn't even running at 75%. Not worth the money
This light is great for the new/beginner reefers as it is easy to set up and having the ability to select already programmed setting either from the website or shared from a friend/LFS. I saw instant change in my nano reef tank after switching to this light.
One of my tanks is a Biocube 32 which I swapped out my stock lights with Steve's LED's. They are a good alternative for the stock lights however, I want to take it to the next level. Even though it's primarily a softie tank, many of my corals have been losing color. Enter the AI primes. I did my research and came up with the decision to swap to this guy. So far, so good. Great color, great app and easy set up with plenty of resources to get you started.
I am not an experienced reefer, I started 8 years ago and I am a guy that collects everything I can. I have Radions- AI Primes- Zethlights - Kessils- Orpheks, even the Chinese boxes. The reason I mention this is because a lot of products fail doesn’t mean all of them. I own many of this lights and it was my upgrade from the Chines Boxes. This lights are awesome is been proven by many great reefers. Mine work fine - I used them and those are my main lights. My others lights are amazing I just can’t get out of this lights. Will they fail probably nothing last forever. My experience so far is Thumbs - Up Have a good day!
This light worked well for a year until the lens melted. Looks like a fairly common issue in the complaints. I was not using the light outside of specs, I was using the BRS Recommended lighting levels. Very disappointing when I have older AI Primes still running without issue.
I believe that ai probably has factory defects on some units/alot. My lense burt out and fan has reduced to 5% ordering replacement parts. Seemed to only last a year. Was looking to upgrade but not with ai...
With lights, its always about price and efficiency. I like the app it comes with which also works great with the Nero pumps. The light has a decent spread but I couldn't tell you the PAR as I am not able to measure it. I judge by the health of my corals and I'd say some do very well. My Duncans, Gonis, Zoas, Fox Coral, Favias and some Leptos love it. The 24k lepto and the Birdsnest seem to prefer the cheaper Amazon lights on my other tank. It. could've better presets imo.
I bought this light as a backup light/QT light until I had my large tank built. After a year the lenses burned out, fan burned out and I set it aside. I forgot about it for awhile and finally decided I would like to use it again. After ordering new pieces and fixing it I decided to set it up again. Pulled out my par wand and found just how abysmal the par was at even a few inches deep at near max intensity. I wish I didn't spend the money fixing it, I probably could have bought a longer lasting, better par light for the amount i spent fixing this. I'm actually a little disappointed this was a BRS recommended light, they have much better lights.
I’m not sure where to start for this one. Never have I ever spent so much money on equipment that is so lackluster. I have had two lights replaced due to melted lenses, the new light I got has a noticeable mismatch between colors, even on the same preset, which at times splits my tank in half with two different hues of blue. I’ve also had to replace a light due to a bad fan. And to be clear, this has all been within a year and a half, if not less. Thank god my LFS has helped work with me through all of this. Then there is the app. What a load of garbage. Lunar points are confusing and difficult to use, acclimation mode sometimes doesn’t even work. my lights and pumps regularly need to be resynced to work with them and the support just sends you uninformative YouTube videos, some that are even using an old version on the app. Only thing I like are the presets. But even those have issues with lunar and acclimation features, in my experience. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this product, the advertised customizability and features are nice, but it’s better in theory than practice for this one.
I love my Primes. I have two of the black 16s. Never had any issues, and setting up the schedule is extremely easy. Only issues I've ever had was a single burnt LED cover (due to user error), and the fact that the fans aren't that easy to clean when they get filled with dust. Just trying to vacuum through the screen won't remove all the dust...and it's not as easy to take apart as just pulling a few screws.
I hate leaving a negative review on these. I have three Prime HD 16's and they've worked very well over an SPS frag growout tank - they grow SPS coral, are easy to control, are compact and mine have been quiet. I keep the fans clear with a can of compressed air regularly. But using the BRS-recommended settings, all three now have multiple burned through places over some of the LEDs. This is concerning, both for the corals and for safety reasons. Not happy that I'll have to replace these but having a light that physically burns its lens concerns me. Perhaps if the settings were not run at >100% they would be fine.
I purchased this light as a backup for my original AI Prime HD light. I had no idea it has no WiFi control! A closer look at the product page on BRS and AI's site makes NO mention of Bluetooth or Wifi controls. Just talks about the Ai app controls. Two immediate downfalls of Bluetooth only control - no ability to monitor remotely and no way to backup/share profiles.
I’ve had my AI light running on my reef tank for almost a year now. Since my reef tank is on the longer side, I had my lights adjusted to a higher height with higher intensity. It was not until recently I noticed the plastic melting on the lens of my lights and 3 or 4 LEDs barely lighting up anymore. I am convinced these lights should not be allowed as such high intensity. These lights are amazing and powerful for their size, however they’re poor constructed to handle the heat the produce. The fan tries it’s best, but even then the loud fan doesn’t seem to be able to do much. I would advise that if you are looking for something cheap and powerful, these are perfect lights but look to get multiple of these lights, in order to not stress these lights out As much as I love the light for what it was meant to be and what it can achieve, it’s poor construction makes it unable to maintain its reputation
I have two over a Nuvo 30. I got them to replace a gen 1 radion. They work great, light up the entire tank, and have awesome versatility. Definitely recommend.
In two months, my coral growth doubled over the eight months of growth I had with the stock Biocube lid/lights. Money well spent.
This light seems to be made of the cheapest parts possible. The fan and heat-sink are terrible. Run any of the LEDs on this light over 50% and it sound like a helicopter is taking off in your room. Not to mention you'll end up with melted lenses. I've had this fan for a little over a year and I regret the purchase every day.
I had to replace mine with SMATFarm G5, because the fan on the AI Prime was TOO LOUD. I only had the AI for about 4 months and the AIO tank was also in the same room that I slept in; needless to say when the AI light hit the peak, I was NOT having a good day with the fan running constantly. Great output in light, but maybe AI should work on that fan so it is not so obnoxiously loud.
I'll reiterate what others have been saying. I've had three of these going for less than a year. The lenses on all three have melted and need to be replaced and the fans are very loud (like, 'hear them from the next room' loud). I like them, but when they need to be replaced, they'll be replaced with something else.
The lens will melt, I have gone through 2 lights so far and they both melted after 8 months of use. Using AB+, in an open environment and regularly checked to ensure no dust build up. Would not recommend, hard to deal with AI support too.
The lense will melt. If you're lucky thats it, I suppose it ruins the light dispersion? If not, and the plastic drips into your tank, welp.
Another great product hampered by an awful app. Using the app to adjust settings is truly frustrating. The sliders are an archaic way of setting spectrum that makes you feel like you're using an app made for the original iPhone when mutlitouch was first introduced. Want to rotate your phone to adjust sliders more easily? Your settings will be erased. Want to adjust settings at any time of the day without blasting your corals with light? Not possible. Want to adjust a setting without having to use sliders? Can't do that either. Power is there, spectrum is there. Small form factor is nice. Fan is definitely loud and not durable, one of my fans is making noise after having it for 3 months so a warranty claim is in the works. Remaking the app from the ground up would put this light in a league of its own.
I have had the lights for a couple of months now and love them, my corals do too!
Got a couple to add to my T5 hybrid. App is easy to use and set up. Colors look decent. Not even running 50%, 67 degrees in my house, yet the fans are cranking away and very noticeable. Need to mount them higher than I would like (T5 overspill) to get the best spread out of them.
Not even having the light a year, the lens has already melted under the UV diodes (which I’m running at the BRS AB+ level). This seems like a common occurrence and like it could be a potential hazard issue. Contacted AI customer support, and they don’t seem to think it’s much of an issue but offer to replace the product, which is nice to hear however it’ll probably have to be replaced again within a year because of this issue. The downside, is that their customer support is taking their sweet time delivering the product which is a little frustrating.
I am currently using one on my Waterbox Cube 20 and it is perfect! My LPS and Zoa's are growing at a great rate and the colors look beautiful. I will be using another one on my Peninsula Mini 15 Anemone tank as well.
One of the two that I received had a malfunctioning blue channel, but AI sent me a new one free of charge without much of a hassle. Now I have two working units over my Mr. Aqua 12g long. Good color on coral and fish. Red channel is especially good at bringing out my clownfish's colors. I only run at about 60%, and they are silent, but if you get above 80%, they get quite noisy.
Love these lights. They are very flexible and can be used for a wide range of applications, also easy to use. Only thing that I'm not a huge fan of with this model is the noise of the fan. I have 3 over a 36" tank with the aquatic life fixture and all 3 can get a little noisy but I am used to it at this point. I love the ability to control each light independently to create even intensity throughout the tank. Highly recommend.
Iv gone through 4 lights in the past 6 weeks with each one being different shades of blue during the ramp periods. One being lighter another darker and another a completely different shade all together almost like a greenish blue.
Overall, this isn’t a bad light by any means. It’s just not as powerful as AI tries to market it as. You’ll definitely need several of these for average tank sizes. I’d only consider a single Prime for nano tanks, or two for larger, lower-light softie tanks. My only major gripe is the color blending (aka disco ball effect). It’s not as pronounced as some older LED fixtures, but it’s definitely there. It can be overcome with some experimentation in your surface water movement. Also, keep in mind that these smaller units create a lot more shadowing than larger ones. Ultimately, I won’t be using these going forward and purchased new lights to support the tank type I am going for.
I have 3 of these lights and I’ll be getting more for sure. These lights give a great range of lights. They really are the best lights I have had. I plan to add them to other reef tanks
I am running this light on my waterbox cube, my corals love this light. Perfect for starter or experienced reefers.
Nice little light with pretty good color rendition. The fan is pretty loud at 50% power, and it is constantly ramping up and down, as if it were under a shifting load.
I've waited to review this light so I could get a fair comparison against the previous generation. I'm to AI producing great lights straight out of the box with the newer generation better than the last. Unfortunately I gotta say this new generation is an example of a downgrade from the previous generation in terms of functionality. The fan is louder, the wifi is gone, and there are a few key differences in the app. I've also seen examples from many other people now who buy multiples and the color output is not the same between 2 or more lights. I also have seen the light come on and off outside of the scheduled program. There are certainly some issues here that AI needs to address. It's sad to see the brand deteriorate with the new generations rolling out...maybe this is the parent company trying to push us into the more expense radions. The pros to this light is it is a more densely packed cluster of LEDs producing better blending and the output is nice. My corals don't seem to mind the color differences between the 2 lights. I was able to tweak my settings in the new light to match the color output in my second light. Early morning when lights first come on and late night before lights out are the only times the colors do not match. The light is more crisp over the previous generation this can be a pro or con depending on your preference. Overall the light is still easy to control and you still get a nice full spectrum light at a low price point. I would recommend this light for those who would only need a single light. If you need 2 or more I would say you may want to consider going with a better, more expensive light like the xr-15's.
This is an amazing little light! I am making a mixed reef and found this light does the job! I hung mine from the ceiling using the hanging kit (sold separately) with 3 lights over my 120 gallon tank. The biggest downside to this, is my Apex CANNOT control the light, which means another stupid app to have to manage, This was almost enough for me not to buy this light, but the app is good and i do not plan to touch the lights for adjustments after this setup. However not being able to monitor the lights more directly is really stupid, and a huge downside to me...
I have purchased two lights April 2020. I hqve gone through 5 lights in 2 weeks. They blue channels are completely different colors. The company has made me jump through hoops just to get a new light. I have spoken to others with this light who have this problem and they have gotten nowhere. They told me to run then since they look operable based on a cell phone picture. I would buy more expensive lights but I am out $500 on these lights. Now I have a tank that is half green/blue and half blue.
I've had this light on my tank for around six months and couldn't be happier. I recently got a par meter and found out but I had to turn the light down significantly. I ended up finding a setting for the light they gave me par numbers between 50 and 60 throughout the entire tank. I also purely by accident found out a way to increase and decrease the settings of the light without having to go in and manually do each color spectrum. If you go on to the 24-hour graph of your light and use your fingers to zoom in or out like you would for Google maps it will actually increase and decrease all of the spectrum's equally at the same time.
I personally don't understand how people are complaining about this product. It's great. The app is very easy to use. You can download presets from AI's website. The fan isn't loud unless the lights are ramping up. For the price I can't complain. It's on my 13g Fluval Evo
This is a great little late for nano tanks. It worked right out of the box. Easy to control with the app, looks great on on my nano tank, not to small not to big. I just wish I had weather affects like my old hydras.
Nice improvement over the hd. To the guy saying there’s not a visual improvement, you may want to look at them side by side set to the same spectrum and intensity. It’s there. Fan is quiet. Tank looks great under it, corals love it, the new moonlight channel is a winner.
Once again I’m shipped an expensive item with scratches on it. Inside of the AI box was all scuffed up and the light was dirty probably because of this. I took pictures of the scratches like I always do but this one actually worked so I didn’t return it. I’m just sick of spending almost top dollar but getting products that aren’t treated with care. It really seems like I was shipped on that was returned probably cuz of the driver issues they were having. Just make sure your not shipping expensive electronics with visible damage, it makes me think I inside is messed up too. The outside shell is a plastic mold but mine looks terribly rough around the edges by the heat sink it just doesn’t look right and clean. AI products and their customer service are great but I just keep having problems with the products I get. I’ve owned 2 26 a 32 and now a prime so I’m not just new to this company and ripping on them I just want every light and every ones experience with the light to be the same and positive
I have this light on a Waterbox 20 gallon cube and it is perfect for this tank. The AI app is easy to use and the light is easy to set up. The build quality is great and the mounting bracket securely holds the light in place and also allows for great adjustibility.
After running the update the fan noise has quietened dramatically. It does get loud for short periods when running at max power. Diffuses well and the app is excellent. Lack of wifi in this model isn’t an issue for meI always use a local connection anyway.
Pros: -The most affordable full-featured LED out there -Very customizable -Can import presets giving it plug and play without having to fuss with customization if you don't want to. -Attractive and seems to be high build quality (especially for the price) Cons: -FAN IS NOISY, this is almost a deal-breaker, I have it running at ~40w which is maybe ~75% power output and the fan seems to want to go to 100% for long periods of time, it does occasionally slow down. FWIW I spoke with customer service and this was an intentional choice in the firmware to extend life of the unit, personally I'd rather have a quiet light that lasts half as long. But hopefully if enough ppl complain they will dial back the settings in the firmware, and this could hopefully just be a temporary issue. -No mounting hardware included (since i'm sure this would add to the price this is more of a neutral point) -A 3rd party diffuser (3dreefing makes a nice 3dprinted one) is REQUIRED.... Otherwise the discoball effect is unbearable.
This is an initial impression review. I have a full review on my YouTube channel, Puff Daddy Reef. I took some initial PAR readings and sound tests with a decibel meter. I can't wait for the BRS deep dive on the thing. The light is still proving itself out for coral growth, so I will speak to other features here. Pros: -Proven spectrum enhanced with 3 more LEDs -Powerful! PAR output directly under light is on par (lol) with the Kessil A360X. Some caveats though, see my YouTube review for numbers and full details. -Moonlight in a unique yellow color (this a con if you don't like yellow moon lights) -Minimal light separation but still more than Kessil. Color separation shows up more on camera than with your eyes. -Built in Bluetooth works flawlessly for adjusting settings. -Light has the same great looks. -Removable dust screen so you can clean off the ugly dust buildup on the old versions. Also enables you to clean the fan. -Price, this light will grow coral and has plenty of power. All for only $210 + mounting hardware. Cons: -No more wifi which means you can only configure settings from the phone. No more offsite or desktop control of your lights. -User interface on the phone app could be improved, especially in the manual demo mode. -The fan is pretty loud at 100% output. I measured the decibel output of it on my YouTube review -Zero mounting hardware included, not even a screw. Don't forget to buy a mounting kit! Summary: Better LED cluster with improved but not perfect blending. Plenty of power and stylish looks. Wifi replaced with Bluetooth. Still a little loud at 100% but for most small nano tanks you probably won't need to run it that hot. Very good light for the price. Happy Reefing, Puff Daddy Reef.
I bought a couple of these for my 40b reef. They were super easy to set up! However the fan noise is unbearable. Louder than either my mp40 or mp10 when running at max — and those are rather loud maxed out. I have the light fixtures running at 35W each which isn’t close to the full output of the fixture, yet the fans are running at what sounds like 100%. What’s worse is they constantly change speed as if they’re reacting to a varying load (like your laptop would), which makes it hard to tune out the noise. My setup is in a room with AC and the lights are not closed in a canopy — they are slightly warm to the touch. To give you an idea, these fans are about twice as loud as my MacBook Pro with the fans at 100%. Also, one of the power bricks has a pretty nasty whine coming out of it. Worried about the longevity of that. Lastly, the spectrum blending really isn’t any better than the previous models (at least visually) and you will definitely have the disco effect. However I picked up the 3dreefing diffuser kit and it completely resolved the issue while retaining a natural shimmer. If you’re reading this review and decide you still want these lights, do yourself a favor and grab the diffusers too. I want to like these lights but there are too many flaws with them; I am regretting the purchase. It’s a shame because they’re a unique product — I don’t think there’s another light at this price point with this level of adjustability (unless you go off-brand). Bummer.
Was wondering if two 16hd's would cover my 36" spread, but I read the spread was 18" x 18" in the description so I gave it a chance, and I'm very happy I did. These lights have given my nuvo a beautiful look now that's very pleasing to look at, and the app is pretty easy to use. I need to get more practice with it to make it just right, but its very easy to use and well designed so that gives me peace of mind compared to those chinese led apps. Price for 2 with stands was just a little over $500, and it was a good price range for me. Didn't want to spend too on lights and this was perfect for me budget and look wise.
